  1. Hey everybody A couple of things have happened recently and I just wanted to get this off my chest before I explode and hurt myself. I just wanted to say that I love geocaching, it’s a great way to get out for a couple of hours and just enjoy the scenery around where I live, scenery that I would never see had I not started geocaching in the first place. So I want to get this out of the way right at the start I love Geocaching, I love the opportunities it gives me to bond with my little girl and I love the thrill of the hunt. OK, then with that being said, I have to say that although I love geocaching, I am rapidly becoming disappointed with the people who do it. Not all the people, because I can’t name the ones who are good and which ones ruin it for everyone else, I am disappointed by the greedy, selfish and lazy ones who go out and trade or take from a cache with no regard for anyone else but themselves. This week I just finished maintaining my first cache Purple Woods Cash and I have to wonder at the people who geocache. The cache had four things in it, A lottery Ticket, a Camera, a log book and a lucky elephant penny. The premise is simple, drop off a lottery ticket, pick up the ticket that’s there, scratch with the lucky penny and good luck, well, when I got there this week, the lucky penny is gone and no lottery ticket, just a log book and camera. What the hell is wrong with people who know what is required for a cache and then just think that the rules somehow don’t apply to them and they just help themselves? What is a cache with a lottery ticket good for if there is not lottery ticket? Geez, they even took the lucky penny, what is going on in their heads? It’s this feeling of cacher entitlement that really gets me, why do you feel that the rules of the cache somehow don’t apply to you? That you can take and not give back, even if it is the only think in the cache? Well, obviously not because the lucky penny was still there if they took the ticket so I guess that was fair game too. Do you not have any sense of fairness or pride? Do you not care about those that come after you? I guess I already have the answer…the answer is no, nobody matters but you. I just wanted to let you all know, I am upset with your selfishness and your misplaced sense of entitlement but you will not stop me from doing the hobby I love, but this is probably good for you since that means you’ll be able to keep on with your ways of not giving a dadgum for anyone else but you. What is the issue anyway? When we trade fair we all better the hobby because those who will come after us will have a good time also, nothing is more discouraging than a cacher who finds an empty cache, and it’s hardly a way to promote the hobby for newbies and keep it growing. When we do anything, we should always think of those who will come after us. So for those of you who don’t care, pick up a new hobby like depleting fishing stocks in the St Lawrence or something and leave my hobby alone. You’re ruining it for everyone. I always try to create fun and themed caches, so far I have been successful with my “A Cache so nice” and “Crazy D’s Car lot”, both caches are clearly described on the web page as to what is expected, but again the illiterate and ones who feel the rules do not apply to them strike again. Cases in Point… 1)Crazy D's Car Lot The page states New cars in the cache so make sure you leave new also, it’s a simple concept really, if you can’t trade, that’s ok, just sign the log and glad you came, well, some cachers simply will not be denied. By the time I ran my maintenance on the cache where were no cars left, bet there were some old sand box cars (crappy and grungy), a novel (and not even a novel about cars), a burnt out flashlight (flashlight?) and some other assorted items that I can only describe a crap. Yes, that’s right Crap! Crap, crap, crap, crap, crap. The plan was so simple that this cache should have been self-sustaining, but no, the cachers who did not care about those who come after ruined it. I restocked the cache, but I curse you who are lazy or so self absorbed that playing fair never enters you silly idiot brains. 2)A Cache So Nice. Another simple themed cache, Superheroes! Simple to trade! I didn’t even ask for new but no, cachers messed it up again. When I ran the maintenance on that cache, what was in it, lets see…a map glass, a couple of key chains and a blue haired troll, can anybody tell me how any of these items are superhero related? Now given, the comic books had to be tossed because of moisture that had leaked into the cache but there was still a ton of stuff left, which meant that what trading there was (and by looking at what was left there was not a lot of it going on) wasn’t even remotely superhero theme related. It’s just so senseless and I can’t for the life of me figure it out. If you can’t be bothered to be prepared for the cache then just sign the log, no hard feelings, but this is just selfish, plain and simple. Well, that’s my tale of woe. People please! Please, please, please, please trade fair and please think of those who will come after you. It is just so disheartening to have to replenish depleted caches and it makes me feel like no one appreciates all the effort it takes to plan, deploy and take care of these things. For those that play fair, you can disregard this message. I sort of feel better now. Thanks DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  2. Well, it's been a good year for you! In my opinion (which counts for nothing) you are one of the best cachers in the area. Your caches are of high quality and imaginative. Don't let it be about the nunbers, becuase -- afterall -- all your virtuals don't really count. Just enjoy yourself and stick to the real caches and 200 will be upon you before you know it! How about you and I hooking up in the near future for that Peterborough Run we talked about? Should get 6 or 7 on that day alone! Good job sir. DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  3. Nothing breaks my heart more than a stolen cache. There are some caches I've found that I had to wonder, Geez, how long until this goes bye bye, and six months later they are still there. But Money, Money, Money was not one of them. Better luck in Future Lives DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  4. Wouldn't it be better to write Decco and ask him to confirm? Nice enough guy despite the fact he's a vegetarian.... DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  5. I have a meridian yellow and I would like to know how to have the track (or "go to") line which appears on the screen after selecting a waypoint to follow my current position instead of stay where I was when I initially selected the waypoint. I know I read it in one of these forums earlier but me recent searches have been unsucessful. Any help would be wonderful DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  6. PC Magazine has a fairly good article on GPS units and how they stack up against each other. I thought it would be a good idea to post this to all those out there that wanted a good second opinion on what kind of GPS they should get. Odd thing though, the basic Meridian and Meridian Gold were not included in the review, but the higher end Magellan models were (SportTrak and Meridian Colour) OK then, know you know DirtRunner. 7. DonnaG is just trying to represent our interests in the Government committee. She works for the government also so it’s a good thing she’s there. To my knowledge she did not bring this up, it was GM100Guy who started the ball rolling to make sure that we COULD go into Provincial parks legally to hunt and place caches. Because DonnaG was already a cacher, she made sure that she was placed on the committee. Sounds like our interests are being pretty fairly represented by her at this moment. Just don’t panic and start jumping to conclusions before we even have a first draft of the policy in our grass stained little hands. If I remember correctly, we all will get to review the proposed draft before it gets stamped into policy so hang tight and wait. To me, I think it would be worth a small fee to place a cache in a park if it means that the Rangers won’t nail it when they find it and if it gets accidentally found and turned into a park office the park managers will at least know what to do with it. But, this is just my speculation about what the policy will entail, I wont make any judgments until I can see it first. Hey at least they are looking at it, they could have just said no caches period. DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  8. Hey Everyone. How cool is this ? On September 24th, 2002 I released the The Good Professor Travel Bug in Brooklin Ontario with the goal to go to the Snow Mountain Cache in China. Today the good professor arrived at his destination. Over 11,000 miles. I just cannot believe it. Now granted, when the professor arrived a the snow mountain cache it was no longer there and the good cacher carrying him ooga booga actually created a new cache to leave the TB there. When you read the log at the cache it just breaks my heart that Booga lost his camera. Just goes to show you, never give up on your bug, you just never know when it will get to where it is going. And to Ooga Booga, you will always have my eternal gratitude for all the great help you have given. Thanks for a once in a life time experience DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.

Select the attributes you want, then copy-paste the HTML onto your cache page. http://www.web-ling.com Geez, thats one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I will be sure to include this on my next cache. Nice Job DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  11. quote:Originally posted by peetz:I was just reading back on some of the threads. It seems like some people are in it for the $$$$$....I myself like to get out there and find the caches that you people put out there.I really enjoy the hunt, and the scenery and the parks that i did not know existed.Yes it is a bonus when you do come across a couple of bucks for gas,but thats not what its all about. And thank you all you local island teams for making this possible, and alive Whoa…where did you get that from? I never ever expected anything from a cache other than a good time and some pretty scenery to a place I never knew existed. I strongly suspect that there is no way to make a living from Caching….sure I came across a few bucks in my adventures, but I never specifically went to a cache grinding my hands together with glee thinking of all the loot I had just found…OK, the first time I did…. Let me assure you, nobody’s in it for the money DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  12. Hey Ya… I was just reading in the paper about a body that was discovered in a remote ravine outside of Toronto, and I was wondering Jeez, what would I ever do if that happened to me while I was caching…. It would probably be something like this…. Hey…what’s that? What the hell is that? It look like…nahhhh Hang on, let me get a stick… It looks like…. <> <> Ahhh Jeez, hey man…you asleep? Hey! <> <> Ahhh Geez…AHHH GEEZ!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK, hang on…lets be sure…. <> <> AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! OK, Hang on, composure big guy…it’s what separates us from the animals…think big guy…think…oh geez…what would Clint Eastwood do at a time like this ??! Can’t think…blind with terror… AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK, OK, get a grip man……OK, OK call the police…yea, that’s it…call the police…. <> Hello Police ? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And so it would go… Now I know there are a million bad things that can happen to you the minute you leave your house everyday, and a day of geocaching is no different…and there is no way I’m gonna stop doing the things I love for something that there is a one in a million chance of happening. But I was wondering… Does anybody else out there have these stupid little fears when they go caching ? I mean don’t start to flame me about if I am so scared don’t leave the house, but we do go to some pretty remote locations for the sport, just the type of place someone might dump a body or anything else undesirable… Maybe I’m alone…anyone else with these things floating around in the back of their heads? Thanks DirtRunner. P.S. Should be 11 degrees on Saturday Whoo Hoo!, gonna bag me a few caches! Hopefully I won’t need any body bags while I’m out… Your not first...But you could be next.
  13. The first scored out at 195 when I was 12 and always in trouble with the school. The second at 205 when I was 18 and always in trouble with the school...But I am sure that my wife would strongly disagree with the results of both scores. Still stupid despite the numbers DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  14. Holy Moly man! It hapened to me to today at about 14:30 +/- 10 Minutes EST. My Meridian was cradled via vehical mount and batteries were less than 10% used. What ever can it all mean? DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  15. Up here in Canada we Had Mr. Rogers also. I remember seeing him after the electric company on PBS but he never caught my imagination. But I understand how you all feel. Up here in the great white north, for me at least, it was Mr. Dress Up. Geez, I was a latch key kid and for a long time he was my only friend. He even taught me how to tie my shoes. Later on I found out he lived a couple of doors down from a friend of mine and I always wanted to knock on his door and tell him how important he was to me but I am sure he would have thought me insane. He died a couple of years ago and I never did knock on his door. Sometimes I am such an idiot. DirtRunner. P.S. With Mr. Dress Up’s Tickle Truck, he would have been an awesome cacher. 16. I agree with most of the guidelines posted with the exception of the see through container. This requirement has also been lifted by most of the parks you cited from earlier. An ammo can is the preferable choice due to its durability and innate ability to take a pounding and stand up to the elements. As long as the container is clearly marked with a Geocaching notice like those sold at the geocaching web site, the need for see though containers could be removed. Lets not proliferate our parks with cheap breakable plastic containers that are not animal proof nor designed to last outside the controlled elements of the kitchen. Thanks, keep up the good work DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.

  18. Oh Man, I was out tonight getting a cache and I nearly lost an ear. Please, a nice warm, yet stylishly appointed, cold weather toque would be a welcome addition to your store offerings. Thanks DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  19. We don't need our own site, this site is perfect. Why re-invent the wheel ? BUT... I would dig Canada being broken down by province so I could ignore BC....seshhh, that one thread about "good bye for now", it just kept going and going and going...how were we supposed to say good bye when you wouldn't go away? Anyway, just kidding about the BC cachers. DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
  20. I see the reason, thanks for the update, I had collected three of the five cards, but I am now glad the coordinates are now public. If you had not posted this I would have never known and kept giving this cache a bye. I believe you post was totally appropriate DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.

  22. Hey everyone. I just picked up a Magellan Meridian and I just love it, but, I miss the Lanyard that my old faithful GlobalNav12 had. Any suggestions on any form fitting cases I could purchase for the unit what would give me this feature? I don't want to start drilling holes. Seems to me to be such a glaring omission. DirtRunner. 23. I spent $335 total for a Magellan meridian (Banana Yellow...yum!) and 128 Mb SD card from ebay, both new. A dealer from Oakville sold me the GPS, and I met him at Yorkdale Mall so there was no shipping and I picked up the card from a dealer in Virginia. But, honestly, the very best think about ebay has got to be that you never get nailed for tax. Hey, when I picked up the GPS, the guy even threw in a Magellan GPS carry case for free. I am very happy with my purchase. DirtRunner. Your not first...But you could be next.
