  1. There is only one instance where I find photologging acceptable. If you go to ground zero, find the cache missing AND it is confirmed by the CO who offers you the ability to log anyway (because you are unlikely to return to the area or because a replacement will take a considerable amount of time). In any other situation, you'll have to suck up the DNF. In fact, I have been offered to log a missing cache and refused to do so, because I want to have a cache in hand before I log it online.
  2. Since you mention this TB is particular large, how big do you estimate the chance that you will find a safe cache of similar size to leave this TB in within the next couple of weeks? I think it's perfectly fine, especially with the added safety of a puzzle as protection. If push comes to shove, the TB owner can ask the cache owner to help the TB along if it sits too long.
  4. Some CO's include their mobile phone number in the hint if a cache can cause issues. Night caches are a good example. So when I say I called the CO, I mean it. If I call a friend, that's what I say on my log.
  5. It would be nice to have them all in one place, but the site that offers this particular tool says you can only try it for free for 30 days. On top of that, it's a PC app, when I'm hunting an FTF, I need something that I can use in the field.
  7. If the cache is a puzzle without a checker, you can't be sure you were at ground zero, other than that, you're probably right. I personally don't do it, but I don't see much of a problem with it. You might want to check with the cache owner and TB owner first to make sure they're okay too.
  8. Unless it blends with its surroundings, I'd put a large container in an out-of-the-way area where muggles are less likely to find it. Upping the terrain difficulty usually helps.
  9. I'd suggest starting with your smartphone too. If you do decide to use your car GPS, use the link at the top of the cache page to convert the coordinates to whatever system your car GPS uses.
  10. Aside from the "no commercial caches rule", there is also a rule that says you need to place caches with a plan to keep them in place for a long time, the so called "permanence" guideline. You might want to go out and find some and see if you're still enthousiastic about caching a couple of months from now. If you are, there's also a good chance you'll keep up the maintenance of the cache you want to place.
  11. I've seen caches that people built and attached to their houses, similar to bird houses but with other constructions and themes. A three storey mouse house, an lock in a garage that could be opened with a key you had to obtain by placing a magnet in the right place, etc. Anything can be a geocache.
  12. Why have you thrown out the other names you mentioned? And what is the point of a series of bad caches to begin with? Are they leading you to a marvelous final? Or are they there to make a point and encourage better cache placements?
  13. Yes, don't follow your compass. If you do, you probably do a lot more bushwhacking than you need. There could be different reasons the caches might be off trail, but unfortunately the most likely is that the cache owner didn't ask permission to begin with.
  14. There are too many people outside the government who rely on GPS for their work and their lives. Think about nature documentary makers, container ship crews, airports, emergency services, etc. I doubt a vital system as GPS will be shut down. Besides, they might be operating it, but there doesn't have to be anyone intervening unless something breaks.
  15. That sounds like a technical problem. Have you tried sending Groundspeak a message about your problem directly?
  16. I know ad-speak when I see it, and the second part of the listing is clearly advertising. I don't mind caches in and around businesses, but this clearly violates the guidelines unless the write-up is redone.
  17. Rest stop caches can already be sorted out if people give it the right attributes. Park and grab picnick tables avaiable etc... Less than 100 meters from the freeway. A pocket query will sort those out in no time.
  18. Do you have any evidence of that, because as far as I can tell, premium-only caches are only less likely to be found, but just as likely to be ripped or damaged by cachers. I completely agree that mandatory training could improve the caching experience, but if you did that, the hobby would die out. Like with anything else, cachers age and die and new blood would be discouraged because no one is going to take a mandatory paid course without knowing in advance what they get out of it.
  19. Android users, remember that there is a Kindle app that you can use to download this in conjunction with an Amazon account.
  20. Lost places are places that most people don't know about or visit: a beautiful scenic spot in the woods or a historic site somewhere in a side alley. Pretty much any place off the beaten path that has some sort of merit. Since most geocache placers tend to seek out such spots, you should have no problem finding some on your travels. You could take it to Isreal if the coin doesn't specify anything else.
  21. It would be nice to have some clarity about this. I've always been told that if a multi-stage is a physical container it should adhere to the distance rule just as any regular cache.
Sterkte!
  24. When people include this information, it's usually done by editing the cache description. Like you would if you made a spelling error or forgot to link an uploaded picture.
