  1. That is cool, new one to me! Now if someone could just tell me where the "Any" key is....
  2. I am new to geocaching, but have spent many hours in the woods in my area (Maine) on my ATV and foot alone and I do not have a cell phone. I have had near misses with moose, deer, bear, coyotes, and even an ornery old beaver once. I have also had the normal slips, falls, sprained ankles, etc., both on foot and on my ATV. It probably is not the smartest thing to do, but there is nothing like the feeling of being out in the middle of nowhere all alone. It does help in this state that we have no poisonous animals and it's hard to be more than a mile from water at any given point in the state. In reality, is going out alone putting yourself in danger anymore than say, skydiving, bungee jumping, or other similar sports?
  3. Assuming both have new good quality batteries and you have each consumed an equal amount of alcohol, I would almost guess one may not be "tuned in" perfectly. I've compared mine with a few others and they have not disagreed a large amount. Set them down side-by-side and compare how many and which sattelites each ones brings in, as well as the signal strength of each. Might help to contact Garmin and make sure this problem is feasible. I can't imagine it, but it's possible if one has newer hardware/software there would be some difference - I'd think accuracy would still be very close though.
  4. It would be neat if a GPS tracker/transmitter could be placed in the bottle so it's location could be posted every 15-30 minutes or so on the web site. That could be a fun chase!
  5. I figured I'd better get to the bottom of this so I called Miss Cleo, and she said Dowsing is for real and it is all a bizzare coincedence we have found all these Tupperware containers with a GPSr. She also said my ex's body was going to be found soon, guess I'd better re-hide it. Hmm, where did I write down them dowsing stick coordinates???
  6. I'd rather not have it there. If I want to visit a user's web site, I'd rather it be a cache related page or a personal page, not controversial and/or buisness related. Then if they wanted to have a link from that page to other pages then fine. I don't know as I'd want it to be a rule though, it's just a tacky thing to do in my mind. A few fine lookin' girls there though

  8. Suppose the safest place to stash and ammo can cache would be right inside the local army surplus store amongst all the other ammo cans?

Saw the "MI" and thought you was one of them crawdad eatin' folks from Missouri, not Michigan, You're pretty near as far north as me so the resolution should be about the same as mine...

The resolution will vary for latitude because those lines get closer nearer the poles, (longitude will be consistent since those lines are parallel) but for where I am (Maine), the thousanths yeild me about 6.25 feet per thousanths digit for latitude and 4.25 feet per thousanths for longitude. Simple math says thats about 65 feet latitude & 42.5 feet longitude for the hundredths digit. I am guessing down where you are the resolution for latitude is closer to 50 ft per hundredth. Take that into affect as well as whether the cache was averaged, accuracy at that time, etc. and it could be off a fair amount. A second thought is that the reading may have been taken without a GPS, but from a map reading instead? Most GPS software will give you distance between 2 waypoints given your inputs as well.
  11. That test was done before selective avilability was turned off, so accuracy will be better now, but I would assume it would take a proportional amount of time to get proportionate accuracy.
  12. It is my understanding in order to use the averaging feature, you have to leave the GPS at the location for an extended time, the longer it is left the more accurate it should be. This could be minutes or hours depending on just how accurate you want to be. Check this page our for statistics on a Garmin GPS 45 with averaging. Improving GPS accuracy by averaging
  13. Think I'll just stick with the suction cup mount stuck to my forehead, litle more discreet...
  14. I emailed USGS a while back about this and was told they are just identifier marks placed by whomever was making the map and they had no use to anyone else. Some maps in my area have AT after the elevation as well. Other abbreviations I asked about are: BR - elevation of a bridge DB - elevation of bottom of stream below the bridge BM - benchmark WL - elevation of water, pond, lake, etc. RD - elevation of a road Also on some are numbers such as 2-12, 1-52, etc., those those tell the roll and frame number of the aerial photogragh used to make the map.
