BRDAD: What great pictures of the West Quoddy Head area. I can almost smell the salt in the air and the sea weed at low tide.Thanks for sharing this and inspite of what appeared to be a bad start on your part, you certainly came thru in flying colors.My Maine Gazetteer is worn out and torn from flipping thru the pages looking at places I would rather be.

BRDAD, I think you should negotiate with one of the local lobsterman to take you out to the Lubec channel light.It should take not much more than a six pack to get the job done.At any rate, even a picture from shore will should be sufficient for all our tastes.I wonder if there are any old cachers out there who remember Campobello island and who lived there and what happen on the island. But that is a story for another day.Good hunting and we will be watching for your log. thanks MICKYD

It sure does look like West Quoddy Head light is the eastern most benchmark in the USA. Now all we need is one of you Mainer's to go and verify and take a picture for us all to see. I would love to be there with you as the rock bound coast of Maine is my all time best place to be. thanks MICKYD ( a transplanted Down Easter)

EASTPORT MAINE, I BELIEVE, BOAST THE EASTERN MOST BENCHMARK IN THE USA AT N44 54 .271 W 66 59 012(NAD 83). RE: PD1179. AS OF THIS LOG, NO CACHER HAS DISCOVERED THIS BENCHMARK.WHEN YOU DO, PLEASE PROVIDE A SERIES OF PICTURES OF THE EASTPORT AREA AS IT IS A PLACE I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO VISIT BUT CAN'T FIND THE TIME. WATER TOWERS, FLAG POLES,CHURCH STEEPLES,RADIO ANTENNAS,CUPOLAS, ETC,ETC ETC..have all been designated by the Survey in one town or another as benchmarks.I know in the Baltimore Maryland area there are virtually hundreds of benchmarks and the ones that interest me the most are those that are most recognizable - water towers, flag poles, church steeples...................etc.And yes, many of them if not all do not have the the circular survey disk, but they indeed are benchmarks and worthy of reporting. What really makes them interesting is if the finder gives some detail or historical perspective to the find.That is my take anyway.

I had the prevelidge of logging a benchmark at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Maryland where Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner. The actual bm is a replica of the flagstaff which Francis Scott Key could see from the British ship he was on.

Your benchmark kv1386 is quite interesting. Great photos! Not a student of navigation but one who is curious, can someone explain why the meridian at this location is not located at W75.00.000.Were the original calculations off that much or is this a datum thing or am I just off base here? thanks MICKYD

Great work RDW, thanks for the research, it is quite interesting.I wonder if the USPS uses GPS technology
when they recover the survey disks? I would hope that our efforts in recovering these benchmarks would supplement and add to the data already collected by the USGS and groups like them.MICKYD

It is interesting to note that the U S Power Squadron
has been given credit for recovering many benchmarks along both the east and west coast dating from what appears to be the mid eighties. I'm curious why they
were involved. Can any one shed a light on this activity?

DO YOU THINK THERE WOULD BE ANY VALUE TO RECOGNIZING UNIQUE BENCHMARKS THAT HAVE BEEN RECORDED AND PHOTOGRAPHED IN A SEPARATE GALLERY WHICH WOULD FALL IN A THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES.
1. THE MOST EASTERN BM POINT IN THE USA
2. THE MOST SOUTHERN BM POINT IN THE USA
3. THE MOST NORTHERN
4. THE MOST WESTERN ETC…
5. BM OVER 14000 FT.
6. BM BELOW SEA LEVEL
7. THE HIGHEST BM IN EACH STATE
8. ETC………
IT WOULD ADD A LEVEL OF EXCITEMENT AND MAY GENERATE SOME ENTHUSIASM TO BE THE FIRST TO LOG ONE OF THESE UNIQUE POINTS.

FINDING THE MASON-DIXON LINE MONUMENTS WAS TRULEY A RUSH FOR ME. IN 1763 CHARLES MASON AND JEREMIAH DIXON,TWO ENGLISH SURVEYORS,WERE CALLED IN TO SETTLE A BOUNDRY DISPUTE BETWEEN THE STATES OF MARYLAND AND PENNSYLVANNIA. THE SURVEY WAS COMPLETED IN 1767 AND HAS BEEN KNOW AS THE MASON-DIXON LINE EVER SINCE. THE SURVEYORS SET UP MILESTONES TO MARK THE BOUNDRY.OVER THE YEARS SOUVENIR HUNTERS REMOVED MANY OF THE STONES, ALTHOUGH AUTHORITIES WERE ABLE TO RECOVER MANY OF THEM. THE LINE HAS REMAINED AT PARALLEL OF N39DEGREES 43MINUTES 26.3 SECONDS. AS CACHERS WE ARE ALL INTERESTED IN NAVIGATING WITH OUR GPS', I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT MR MASON AND MR DIXON, IF ALIVE TODAY, WOULD BE A GEOCACHER, ENJOYING IN OUR SEARCH FOR BENCHMARKS AND CACHES. I ventured out today to discover the new world of "benchmarks" and found to my surprise that the benchmark in question ( JV1344 ) was within a Railroad Right-of-way. Actually at the west portal of a main line tunnel! Now as a retired Railroader(thirty four years service), I can state unequivocally that CSX TRANSPORTATION nor any class one Railroad wants geocachers or anyone ON there Right-of-way at any time. So I would hope that would-be Benchmarkers research the location before venturing out.I know this is a wonderful family activity so lets be safe out there.It takes over a mile to stop a fast moving freight train on the main line. I am a member of THE MARYLAND GEOCACHING SOCIETY (www.mdgps.net) a group whom share common interest in geocaching and work to promote the sport throughout Maryland and neighboring states. We have undertaken a process to work with public park officials to explain to them what geocaching is and to listen to the park people concerning their fears and apprehensions, which they may have about geocaching. It is our goal to foster understanding and secure permission to hide caches on their park facilities. We will continue to double efforts in this regard and it is our hope that through meeting and presentation that all park officials in the state of Maryland will greet all cachers with open arms.
Members of our society have just completed placing a series of micro-caches along the Patuxent river water shed in Howard County Maryland (zip 21045). The area is known as the Patuxent Branch Trail and it is bike friendly. The degree of difficulty for these micro-caches may run from two stars up to extreme caching, hanging from limbs over an ice choked river.
