  1. ok, so I've got a few travel bugs out there, and a couple have gone missing / destroyed / muggled whatever. Can I do anything with the 'copy' dog tag? Can I release it on another travel bug? Thanks FatGaz
  2. HA HA I think it looks GREAT! Love the 'shopping list' on the door!! FatGaz
  3. I've heard that you can make your own car a travel bug! How does that work??? I assume you put a Teavel Bug in the car (ie hang from mirror), and then log your car in and out of caches when you visit them. But wont there be a discrepancy with the milage? You could drive 5 miles and park - then walk 8 miles and find 8 caches by the time you get back to the car - then drive home again. This would log more milage than actually travelled, surely. But perhaps I'm being too particular, and it should all be done in the name of fun! Anyway, back to the question - how does this work? Thanks FatGaz
  4. OK, so I bought my GPSr and had to enter my first co-ords by hand, which I quickly learned was a right royal pain, as I had to enter about 30 co-ords as I was going on a hike / cache hunt. So I then bought the cable to connect to the PC (via Serial port), and I downloaded EasyGPS, and everything was fantastic! How easy! So I then bought a Palm Vx (which had to be connected to the Serial port), so I removed GPS cable, and replaced it with Palm cable. Used the Palm on a couple of local caches and it was fantastic - no more paper! Great! Oh dear - now I have nowhere to put GPS cable, as there is only one Serial port on PC! I have removed Palm cable and replaced GPS cable, but now EasyGPS cant find GPSr, as the COMM1 port is allocated to Palm! This means I'm back to entering co-ords by hand! Please HELP!! for the sake of my fingers and my sanity!!!!!!!! FatGaz
  5. I reckon about 20 miles is about the maximum distance I would travel for a 'local' cache. How far would you go for a local cache?
  6. Best wishes mate - may you be back home soon!
  7. Got it sorted - Premium member at last - now I've just got to sort out: 1. This Palm Vx that I have just got. 2. CacheMate. 3. GSAK. 4. Paperless caching...... They say its easy! - Wish me luck.....
  8. Thanks Alibags! Downloaded my first O/S desktop. Will be using these regularly.
  9. The first cache that I placed is called 'The Pet Shop', and I filled it with animals / creatures that I mainly collected from cache finds. Other than this I dont always trade, often going the TNLN route. I've got plans for my next 'themed' cache, so will be looking for certain items to trade to help fill it, along with a few bits that I will buy / already have.
  10. I ordered and paid for my Premium Membership yesterday by PayPal, and I am still a basic member. I was under the impression that by paying by PayPal that things would have been sorted pretty quick. Has anyone else paid this way? How long did it take?
  11. NG6 8HQ - Nottingham - 261 (will be 262 when my latest gets reviewed!)
  12. Well, I've set my first 2 caches!! First (which I intended to be my 2nd) was set on 23rd - its a Micro cache. Second one was set today (24th) and its a traditional / tupperware type - just waiting for it to be reviewed - cant see there being a problem though. Happy hunting folks!
  13. Thanks Stora - I'm sure I will be in touch!!
  14. I have won a Palm VX off eBay for £10, this includes postage! So I am hoping this will cover my needs! - It has a mono screen, and 8mb.
  15. Sometimes I will be searching for 6-8 caches a day in areas that are not local to me (ie: 1-2 hours drive from home) so I think a PDA will be useful. I think I will be looking for a mono screen, with 8mb. No I am not a Premium member as yet - what benefits, in terms of software, will this provide? Cheers
  16. I'm lookin to buy a PDA as I would like to try out paperless caching. I'm on a very tight budget, so will be looking to buy an older / second-hand model, probably off eBay. I would be using the PDA alongside my Etrex Camo. Do you think I should go Colour or Mono screen? What size memory? Which software to use? Any additional advice very much appreciated, as I know little (nothing!) about PDA's. Thanks guys!!
  17. Was just wondering what your views were on spoiler pics? When I searched for my first few caches (which were local) I didnt look at the spoiler pic, as I thought it would spoil the hunt, and that worked fine. But, the other day, I travelled to Derbyshire, about 1.5hrs away to do a bit of hiking/caching. Had 6 caches planned for the day, but only found 4. If I had taken spoiler pics with me then I may have found all 6. Chances are that I wont be around this part of Derbyshire again for maybe a year, as I like to vary my hiking locations. So, I'm thinking of not using spoilers on my local caches, as I can always come back 'next week', but perhaps take spoilers with me on my hikes up Derbyshire ( but I do think it spoils the hunt). What do you think? FatGaz
  18. Hi All - I'm new to this, but really enjoying it, and I'm about to set my first cache. I've read the page on Geocaching.com about placing your first cache, but I just wondered if anyone had some additional / practical advice, as I would hate to find my first one (or any cache) muggled!! Thanks in advance FatGaz
  19. Bad luck!! This is what I'm worried about as I'm about to place my first cache! Just getting all the bits together, including a couple of TB's that I've picked up. I might wait until the kids are back at school, as the location I am thinking of is in a public park. Let's hope this incident doesn't put you off placing more caches! Good luck for any future ones!
  20. Took my new Garmin Etrex out for a bit of a test run, and to get the 'feel' for it. Went to a local park, parked the car and set 1st waypoint by the car. Then I followed various footpaths marking waypoints at junctions. After about 10 waypoints I decided to work my way back to the car. A small part of my route was under light tree cover. GPS seemed to struggle a little. GPS stated '20ft accurate', yet was often 50ft / 60ft 'out' at junctions, even in the open. When I got back to the car it said that I had still got 80ft to walk! Will I still get these inaccuracies when I download routes / waypoints from my PC? Suppose it will make the whole thing more 'fun'. Is this a common 'fault'? Do other people experience this often? Overall an 'interesting' experience - just proves to me that you still need a map, and the GPS is a useful additional tool. Cheers
  21. Hi All... newbie here! I'm on a very tight budget (to be honest my budget went on my new Etrex Camo!) and need your advice on software.... Is the free EasyGPS on this site useful, or should I be looking at buying MapSource or Memory Map or something similar. Only got my Etrex yesterday... never had a GPS before... never done this Geocaching before but cant wait to get started. Any advice would be most welcome (on software or anything GPS / Geocaching) Thanks Guys
