  1. 1. How did you find out/start geocaching?

    2. Who/what got you started geocaching?

    3. How often you do it?

    4. How long have you been doing it?

    5. Spending amounts:

    a. Price of GPS <$135 Garmin 12 from the PX>

    b. Placing a cache < Minimal - just the cost of decent containers. I have found that you can get a TON of interesting items from an auction for a few dollars. Far more interesting than buying junk from the dollar store>

    c. other equipment and prices (lights, ropes, etc)<$98 for a Camelbak daypack I have devoted to caching gear: water, headlamp, notebook, items,FRS radios, etc>

    Hope that helps!

    Sincerely,

    PULASKI

Its been awhile since I read this thread and its nice to see that the post 9/11 paranoia about ammo cans has died down. icon_smile.gif

The US Military Ammo Can is one of the best surplus buys out there. For whatever reason,( ammo can factory in an influential Senator's home district? ) most ammo cans are used once and then sold as surplus. This means that many are like new when purchased.

God Bless The Ammo Can - Tupperware is for the kitchen!

Looking back at the picnic - three weeks, one new baby, and an army summer annual training later - I just want to publicly thank all those who helped with its planning, conduct and tear-down.

We had a great time and I am looking forward to seeing many of these folks again.

  4. Greetings Folks!

Two days until the picnic! Several caches have been placed in the park just for Saturday's big adventure.

There WILL NOT be enough picnic tables for everyone so please bring lawn or camp chairs if you have them.

Also, if anyone has horseshoes - please bring them. I dont know if anyone will play but I cant find my set ( bought at Walmart over the winter for $9.99 but $24 in May! )

We are up to 125+ people so there should be all sorts of good food, interesting people and tales of caching glory.

This is a certified 100% fun event - even if you have just discovered your addiction to geocaching - you are welcome to attend and enjoy the day.

We have a zillion doorprizes and the one day caches seem to be of different varieties so everyone should be able to score a few.

Also, if anyone is high-tech enough to have a laptop and a wireless modem...... just thinking that it would be high speed to be able to log your cache finds right from the pavilion! :-)

Setup starts around 9AM and most of the one day caches should be turned on by sunrise so feel free to come whenever.

    See you soon!

  6. Greetings!

Lynn, the world's most prolific geocacher, has informed me that she has decided NOT to overextend people on June 1st and will not be putting out the caches at Middle Creek.

There WILL be temporary caches in/around Buchmiller Park on the day of the picnic.

    Everything else remains the same.

  8. Greetings!

CCCooper & Crew, after much hard work in prepping 8 caches for the picnic, has decided that it is in the best political interest of all geocachers to use the one day approval for June 1st 2002 ( the date of the picnic which is now being held in Lancaster )

Lynn will be stashing caches at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area on 6/1/02. The best zipcode to use for a search is 17039. There is plenty of time in the morning for people to hit Middle Creek and then travel to Lancaster or to spend the whole day at either location.

Lynn also brought up the important issue of access for a variety of activities on public lands. This is a critical action for the future of any sport that uses these lands.

In Pennsylvania - GAME LANDS are purchased with the revenue generated from hunters and hunting licenses. There is no mandate or even right to access these lands by non-hunters. On the other hand, PA GAME & FOREST lands are taxpayer purchased.

I HIGHLY recommend that you write letters supporting ongoing land access to public property by varied groups such as geocachers, horseback riders, etc. Because taxpayers have a right to access GAME & FOREST lands it may be most beneficial to focus your lobbying on these areas first. Either way, it NEVER hurts to make elected and appointed officials aware of what is important to you.

Summary of caches for picnic day:

    1. Lancaster Co Kids Cache nearby

    2. Picnic cache will be open - feel free to donate whatever item you wish to get this one started. A volunteer(s) is needed to stash this after the picnic.

    3. Several one day caches will be hidden. More info on this soon.

    4. Their are several locationless cache possibilities nearby: disk golf cache, covered bridge cache, USGS marker cache, etc. These locations may or may not already be scored. Check out www.brillig.com/geocaching/ if you havent seen Ed Hall's master list of odd caches!

    Thanks.

  10. Greetings!

Thanks for the offer of your camera RedIguana. I think resolution in the four digit range should be great. Can you tell Im no digital imagery master?? :-)

Also, will you say "throw another shrimp on the barbie" for us? I know thats Australian but you are the closest thing we will have to an Aussie at the picnic!

How do you folks get those neat signature photo/images for the forum? I want one!

    Thanks,

    PULASKI

  11. GREETINGS!

First, if you havent been contacted about NAME BADGES - please email Greg at gnbrotz@innernet.net and let him know your TEAM NAME ( if you have one ), TRAIL NAME ( if you use a name different than your given name ) and your REAL NAME ( first name or first and last - your choice ).

He is making a standardized name badge for people. He will have blanks to fill in at the picnic but this way most people will have a pre-printed model in a standard format.

I like the PIRATES' idea of bringing gear. Maybe we can all learn something new! There should be enough room to have table just to display gear. I KNOW that someone will be a GPS Superstar and have a very expensive GPS that will make the rest of us cry!

A friend of mine has a vehicle mounted GPS and screen and the icon is a miniature version of his truck!! Thats high speed!

    Sincerely,

  13. Greetings All!

We have secured what is quite possibly the last pavilion available for Saturday June 1st! Thanks to LES (PATLES) for being at the park office when it opened today.

The picnic will be held at Pavilion#33 at Buchmiller Park ( just south of Lancaster ).

Les reports "It is a really nice spot, neatly landscaped, well shaded, with electricity, running water, 18 large picnic tables, 3 small (16") grills and one large (36") covered grill onsite, and just a couple hundred feet from the Conestoga River and a hiking trail along an abandoned rail line. Within walking distance are: rest rooms, playground, tennis courts, ball field, and a Disc Golf Course, whatever that is"

In the ADC LANCASTER CO Mapbook it is: MAP40 F 9-10

More info will be put out later today.

    Sincerely,PULASKI

  14. When I met my wife ( who of course was my girlfriend at the time ) she took me to a Berks County landmark - THE PAGODA. Its a real Japanese Pagoda that was given for some reason to Reading, PA.

It sits on "Skyline Drive" which is a neat road along the ridgetop. She took me to the overlook and made me stare down at the city. When she was a teenager, the kids would come there for a good chuckle.

Supposedly, a series of streets below spelled out "****" in the curves of the streets and especially the street lights.

I looked and looked until my eyes crosses and I didnt see a single stinking letter - let alone a complete word that adolescents could laugh at.

I dont know if this mystery would appear on a Reading street map or a 7.5' topo. I dont even know if it ever appeared for real.

But, potentially it might be something odd on a map. Whatever.

    :-P

  16. GREETINGS!

We need someone to bring a digital camera with BETTER THAN AVERAGE RESOLUTION.

Something along the lines of a pro model.

We need high-quality, high-res images for the webpage and to send to GARMIN and MAGELLIN/THALES ( at their request for donating apparel ).

If you have something like this please reply here.

    Thanks,

    PULASKI

  17. Greetings Folks!

Due to several "what if" questions regarding the weather and the large number of people attending the picnic - we will probably be moving the location to somewhere with a pavilion.

This is also due to the fact that Uncle Sam has called me to duty 31May02 in support of the 2500 Pennsylvania troops headed to Bosnia. I will not have a raindate if it pours Saturday and would probably have to delay this until Autumn. Loads of people have altered all sorts of plans to make it on June 1st.

This will allow us to have a roof over the rain-haters, the food spread and the prizes.

Exact info should be posted soon. Sorry for any confusion.

    Sincerely,

    PULASKI

  18. Greetings folks!

I have gotten several replies about a cachers picnic - so - lets get one started!

I attempted a find of the CAPT MORGAN'S cache yesterday and thought that the far side pavilion would be an excellent location.

Its just a few minutes off Rt 30 going towards Millersville. Thats not too far from the Reading, Harrisburg and York areas as well as close to Lancaster. The kids playground area is nearby and the pavilion is over a small hill so the general gawking public wouldnt be staring at a bunch of people oogling GPS units and green ammo cans!!

Lets shoot for MAY or JUNE. I dug out 6 or 8 ammo cans as door prizes.

Anyone interested in helping set this up can contact me directly at hooahman@redrose.net

MissJenn & Geoscouter: Please get ahold of me so we can get this started. I will call Manor Twp and see what dates are available.

    Bye for now -

  20. Greetings!

Spent last week in sunny FL and scored 7 virtual and real caches. There are many hidden in Disney/MGM/Universal/SeaWorld. I wish we had planned better!

One of my pet peeves is people who put utter junk in a cache as their contribution and those who hide their caches with little or no thought.

It seems that Florida is home for a whole lot of these people. I didnt encounter an ammo can anywhere and most of the plastic tubs were soggy messes inside. We even brought one back to the hotel room to clean and dry it.

We left a traveller from York County and brought one home.

Speaking of ammo cans - I have a bunch of .50 cans

if anyone needs them. You can see a pic of what a .50 can looks like at: www.joesarmynavy.com/ ammo_box.htm I bought over 100 of them on a whim last year and Mrs Pulaski doesnt think I need that many!

Also, I'm thinking of having a geocachers picnic this spring. Maybe ammo cans would be doorprizes!!

My SEPTEMBER 11th 1777 and TRIBUTE TO THE NATICOKES caches are out. They will pop right up under a search for zip 17578.

    Just a few rambling comments!
