  1. Never mind...I've got my coordinates wrong. I wish I could delete the original post...now the whole world knows I'm a knucklehead!
  2. Hello! Anyone in Bulgaria care to work with me to log the Where's in a Name? locationless cache? The coordinates from my name are 42° 28.38, which if taken as north latitude includes Bulgaria...as well as Italy, Spain, and bits of other countries, of course, but Bulgaria seems like it would be particularly interesting. Please respond to the post or e-mail me. This should be fun!
  3. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:"Heck, I'm telling everyone!" Best one yet! How about... Two guys are driving along, and the guy that's driving notices he's getting low on gas. He's about to pull into a gas station when his friend says, "No, don't stop here, there's another gas station about a mile up where you get free sex with a fill-up." Sure enough, when they come up to the next gas station, there's a big sign outside saying, "Free Sex with Fill-Up." They pull in, the attendant comes over, and the driver says, "Fill 'er up." After the attendant starts pumping the gas, he comes back and the driver asks, "What's this about the free sex?" "Well, it's a little gimick we have. I think of a number between 1 and 10, and if you guess it, you get free sex." So the driver says, "OK, I'll guess '5'" "Nope, sorry the number was '2'" Then his friend says, "My turn, my turn...'7'" "Nope, sorry the number was '9'" So they get their gas, pull away, and the driver says, "Why did you send me here? That is the biggest rip-off I've ever seen!" And his friend says, "No, no, it's legit. My wife gets gas here all the time and she won three times last week!" 4. I usually go caching with one or both of my kids (3 and 5), so I think I'd be a lot more intrepid if that wasn't the case. Rain and cold don't generally bother me. Another thing to mention in NJ summers is HEAT and HUMIDITY. I made the mistake of going with my 5-year old to our first cache on a day in early July when it was in the 90s and about 137% humidity. Fortunately we were under tree cover and it wasn't too hard a find, but in hindsight it wasn't too bright. ---------- "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin
  5. The only one I've looked for so far (unsuccessfully) is Minute. Like you, I work pretty close to it, but have yet to make a second attempt. Eternal Reward is very close to where I live, but I forgot to get the coords from For Kids and Dogs so I haven't gone after that one yet. I've also been thinking I'll go after his easier ones first in the hope of learning his mindset. ---------- "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin
  6. quote:Originally posted by targetdrone:What else is there in New Jersey?? I spent a couple of months in East Rutherford (before my Geocaching days) looking at swamplands. yeech! It's a shame you didn't venture out of East Rutherford. I've lived in NJ my whole life, and it's (mostly) a beautiful state. I'm sure StayFloopy and the others will agree, and they've seen even more of it than me. ---------- "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin

  8. Way to go, Team Ekitt10! Now if I can just stop working on my old house for long enough to get to ten finds! Maybe we'll meet you when the Status Crow hunt starts up again. Best of luck with the next 100! ---------- "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin
  9. Turkey Swamp, in Monmouth County. Mostly because of the memories of when I was a kid growing up nearby. We used to go ice skating there, and they actually had fireplaces you could go and sit by when your toes got too frozen. Anyone living in the area know if you can still do that? Assuming it ever gets cold enough again in NJ for the lake to freeze. ---------- "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin

  11. Like ApK, we buy Heinz, so it's "ketchup." And I believe the culinary distinction between sauce and gravy is that the latter is made with some kind of meat base, like turkey or beef gravy. So the tomato-based stuff you put on spagetti is "sauce." Having said that, my friends of Italian ancestry call it "gravy" and they don't like it much when I correct them. Go figure. ---------- "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin

  13. If you have any army-navy stores nearby, you may want to try them, rather than gun shops. If you're not buying more than a few, the price may be about the same as getting them mailorder (with the shipping) and you'll be helping to support a local business. I got two for $6.99 each near where I work. "Real" army-navy stores are a lot of fun to poke around in, too. We had a great one on Rt. 1 in Linden, NJ that's unfortunately out of business now. ---------- "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin

We live in NJ, and I've been telling my wife if we have another Summer like this, we're moving to Maine. Argh. Maybe Yellowknife... I'm glad Fall's coming, too. I like Spring too, but I always have in the back of my mind that the weather will only get hotter. 18. Hard to believe there was still one left that I could find over a long lunch today, but I snagged #4 at "Aw, Why So Shad?" in Lambertville. And I came back to work with a muddy shoe to show for it! Thanks, Status Crow, for a fun hunt. "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin

  20. Just an interesting note for all of us who have visited Turtle Back Rock cache in NJ's South Mountain Reservation. Strange but apparently true, the turtle-back "carvings" on the rocks are actually natural formations! I spoke to a naturalist at the Turtle Back Zoo a day after visiting the cache, and he told me they are the result of quickly cooling magma in the area. Hard to believe for those of us who have seen it, but this guy seemed to know what he was talking about. "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin
  21. Maybe a different way to approach this is to have the option to be e-mailed about the caches you've found, since they're already being tracked for your account. That way you only need to actually watch caches you haven't found. On a related note, how about categories for watch lists? I haven't seen this suggested before, but it would be cool to be able to categorize watched caches..."Near home," "With Travel Bugs" etc. "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin
  22. I did an on-line search (including the Asbury Park Press) and asked a friend who lives right near there, but didn't come up with anything. Maybe it was just a prank. "No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up." - Lily Tomlin

  24. But after reading the other posts I'd have to vote to keep them they way they are, and encourage people to put enough info in the descriptions. I think it would be unworkable otherwise, given the number of potential variables. A consideration for me is that I like to go geocaching with my two kids (3 and 5), so thus far I've only gone to caches in local parks where I can judge based on MapQuest, the cache description, and my famiiarity with the area that it's a short walk and relatively easy terrain. Maybe I'll change my mind once I start geocaching farther afield! No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up. - Lily Tomlin
  25. I'm a newbie, but adjusting the elevation on my two finds today seems to have made a difference. When I manually entered the coords on my eTrex, for whatever reason the "default" elevation was 79 ft. below sea level. When I got close to each cache, I noted my actual elevation (+59 and +53 feet), edited the waypoint, and hit GoTo again. In both cases, I got much closer than I had with my previous two finds where I didn't use the elevation -- in fact, I didn't need the hints. It seems to me that if I hadn't changed the elevation on the waypoint, I would have been ~120 feet off. Of course, this is assuming the coords for the cache are accurate. Am I not understanding the third dimension of this? It seems to me if I was standing on the edge of a cliff 200 ft above sea level, directly over a cache hidden in the face of the cliff 100 ft below me, the GPSr would say I'm 100 ft away. I guess the arrow would spin as I moved because it wouldn't be N, S, E or W of me, but... I understand what Kerry and Team Dragon say about the accuracy of elevation on entry-level GPSrs, but it seems to have made a difference today. Or maybe it's just that the cachers' coordinates were more accurate. No matter how cynical you become, it's never enough to keep up. - Lily Tomlin
