Hopefully forum users will already know I've a caching event at the top of Ben Nevis on June 30th this year. When I set it up in January I thought it would polish me off, but thanks to some serious weightloss and fitness improvement, I think I could do a bit more. The obvious thing is to turn it into Part 1 of a Three Peaks Challenge, by adding a cache event at the top of Scafell Pike in the middle of the night, and a Snowdon Peak event the following morning. Would anyone else be up for three events in 24 hours at the highpoints of Scotland, England and Wales? It's not something I'd want to set up just for me- although each event would be a stand-alone proposition for anyone to attend. Snowdon, particularly, is a piece of cake to get to the top of, thanks to the railway line... Any thoughts?
A great idea and a challenging day/night.
I did the 3 peaks 10 years ago and completed it with minutes to spare owing to an incompetant driver !!!
One thing you should bear in mind however and this was brought home to me following a conversation with a Lakeland farmer a few years later.
Scafell is usually the second peak of the challenge and as such is usually reached in the middle of the night. Hundreds of walkers do the challenge and all arrive by car/minibus at Seathwaite making loads of noise an waking the locals. They are all fed up with it !!!
I would advise parking further down the road away from the village and walking a few hundred yards further [not making any noise] or alternatively go up scafell another way.
Good luck any one who tries it !

Just a quickie to show some public praise for Garmins UK customer services..
Yesterday my shiny new Colorado 300 arrived, was quickly unboxed and fiddled with.
Got home, hunted high and low for my Topo DVD, and after finding it, found the US website wouldn't let me get a second licence code.
Well, to make a short story longer, I called Garmin this morning, and 7 minutes later, I had the required second licence code and necessary Topo update info emailed to me.
I have to agree
Their service is second to none !
On 2 occaions my etrex cx failed and the unit was replaced F.O.C even though out of warranty.
Will certainly go back to them when I need an upgrade [soon]
My Renault Espace however continually broke down and Renault were incompetant in all aspects of their business..... I will never ever purchase another one of their cars.
Take note manufacturers - the power of the internet is inescapable.

I set an underwater cache and was told by a reviewer to make it 5/5. End of story.
Not all are 5/5 !
Try 'Underwater cache'

1.5 / 2.5 rating !

Hi Guys
I have a caching Landmark coming up (2000) and want to do a special cache to bring it up. I am Gloucestershire based but cache every weekend somewhere different and to be honest most places are pretty easy to get to so all suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Scott
What are your preferences?
Puzzles/ physical caches/ difficult terrain/ Multi caches ?
I think you will find that the Box Hill area of Surrey [near Dorking] has all of these on offer in some of the prettiest areas of the country to boot !
Have A GREAT TIME !!

I'm very much a newbie and will be going to egypt in aug on holiday. Do they have caches there and how do I google earth caches. Thanks
I was in Sharm last December [and what a truly horrible place it was !] and also down the road at Naam bay where the bomb went off a few years ago. I have to say that despite my best attempts, between the locals [who kept harrassing the tourists] and my wife [who did'nt want me to leave her side for one minute [above reasons] -despite being only 200m away from the cache it was a csae of DNA [did not attempt]
Don't let my comments put you off the reason however as the diving was spactacular and the Hyatt hotel beach complex great as well. I especially appreciated the pool butler who would straighten out my towel after every swim !!

O.K this one had been planned for over a year. It involved a micro 70ft up a tree in the middle of a lake on an island. It would have been a 5/5 'extreme' cache.
I actually thought this was all a joke until I read Deceangi's explanation...
I don't really see the point of the OP, despite the row of smiles.
From the description given, this is clearly not a regular 'boating lake' and requires swimming or boating (with your own boat) to get to the island. I'm presuming it is pretty deserted normally, so why do all that before asking permission?
Permission refused by land owner.
Live with it.
Move on.

Just to clarify things folks- I have no intention of trying to get this cache published on any other site [whatever these may be]
Never mind the stupid byelaw about tree climbing [the Council representative himself seemed to be in doubt about the rights or wrongs about this]
the site is on a nature reserve and the owner/ manager believes that there could be a conflict of interest if a cache is placed there , even if it was only to get a few visits per year.
Deceangi brought to my attention the fact that the site was a nature reserve [which is not obvious as there are no signs / no details on a normal scale map] On his advice I took the matter further and contacted the council official.
There are a number of caches within the park but alas there will be none on the island.

Unfortunately [and unknown to myself] the lake had been established as a nature reserve and not only that but there is an old bylaw banning tree climbing in the park !
The Council representative [and nature warden] from whom I sought permission [retrospectively] is also a local cacher and maybe pleased that it was not another DNA [did not attempt] cache in this area littered with really high grade caches.
I did however enjoy the climb and ice skate to place the cache !!
So what did you do before your plans were thwarted ?

Well Done on reaching your 2000th cache We will soon catch you up lol (Not)
Wrong place for these notifications but well done all the same !
Oh and well done Geocotch for his 500th [and a FTF] today.

She always had great fun out caching and was known to find the odd box or two herself.
More than my Springer Spaniel Douggie has ever done - Who said these dogs are supposed to be brainy ?!!

I'm pinning this topic at the top of the forums as a place where you can express your congratulations to anyone and everyone when they achieve a significan geocaching milestone. It is meant to replace the numerous "Congrats" threads that appear from time to time in the UK forum.
Although not everyone will be happy with this style of offering good wishes to fellow geocachers, it is commonly used elsewhere and most people who responded to my previous thread thought we ought to give it a go.
So.......congratulate on
Well done Geocotch on your 500th ! and choosing to celebrate it by achieving a FTF on my new cache 'Look out' !!

I know that the rules state a cache must have a log, but have come across a couple of Nanos now where one has to e-mail the colour found painted inside to claim. I personally think this is a good idea as the piece of minute paper to log upon does not last long at all and getting it in and out adds to its demise eventually as well. So is putting a colour/letter/numeral to e-mail back to the owner actually permitted by the reviewers?
Can someone please let me know where I can get hold of one those magnetic nanos please as need one to replace a cache that was 'lost'
Many thanks
Will send 'nano' sized bank notes to any one who can help !!!

Hi All,
My daughter is heading to London very soon, however she will be GPSr-less.
Could anyone point us to a TB hotel she could find /access easily without a GPS?
We'd like to drop a bug and see where it goes.
I've already contacted one cache owner in the area who has many finds, he was from too far away to help, although we found one cache which happened to be muggled the next day :-(
I'm still pretty green in my geocaching, but have seen TB hotels in the US which are pretty much obvious (at truckstops for example) and are protected from muggles by a combo lock ...thought maybe something like that would be available.
thanks for any advice
Hate to publicise my own cache but 'Evelinas childrens hospital' GC10NNQ really is muggle free and reachable without a GPS. [look at google earth and follow the clue]
Good luck !!!

As a Southern 'Softie' I used to work for a Company based in trafford Wharf and frequently used to walk to the city centrewithout any mishap. i think this is what they used to call 'Moss Side' ?
You're pretty ok around the trafford area, white city - a few of the corrie people live round that area - the main moss side area is 1.5mile east
Exactly my point ----- have you not seen the number of murders and other serious incidents that occur involving these corrie St residents !

There's 8 so far with more on the way if anyone is interested. About 5 are new and waiting for a first to find.
They're more for a laugh than anything else. I fancied something a bit different form the scenic routes around woodland and canals. I'd like to think that they're ingeniously hidden in and around the streets of Moss Side, Manchester. I've specifically chosen streets and locations notorious for alleged dodgyness.
The area is a bit rough so common sense will be paramount. In all fairness though i think they're as safe as any other cache site. I think that they're pretty challenging because of the amount of muggles that will be around. But hey, no matter how dodgy you look, you can't be much worse than the locals. Infact you'll probably blend in very well, sculking around and looking shifty!
Moss Side was on Channel 4's Secret Millionaire program a few weeks back and was understandably described as a toilet. I'm not making some political or social statement that Moss Side is like Sesame Street, but i feel comfortable putting these cache's out and would be surprised if anyone didn't feel comfortable searching for them.

Local based collegues used to raise an eyebrow or two but it proved in my opinion that it was the Northerners who were the 'softies' !
Certainly not adding these caches to my 'Extreme' bookmark listing !
Like the theme however - hope they don't get muggled.
Good luck to you.

I cannot believe that my original thread to this topic 'muggle this' could have opened such a can of worms !
Do I get a 3 day forum suspension ?
-
Was really enjoying the log dialogue [especially as it has ramifications for a number of my 'extreme' caches]
and then decci gave it the chop and locked the cache from any new comments.
'Muggle this' a cache by Jerryo
http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...68-77f2d781b982
I think this is a justified debate for a forum regarding how 'extreme' caches are obtained
Personally, I would expect individuals to make up ther own minds as to how they find a cache just as long as they sign the log themselves and not hand it down /up for others to sign ! as it ain't ethical !
I would expect them to read all disclaimers [including the GC.com one] before attempting the cache i.e attempt the cachee ENTIRELY AT THEIR OWN RISK !
Remember however no cache is worth dying for !!!!!

There's a link to the Mega's Event page right at the beginning of this thread but I'll drop one in here too for anyone new who hasn't seen it -
The UK's First Mega Event - Sunday 3rd August 2008.
MrsB
Thats what we wanted !
Ready steady go everyone !
-
Hope the event goes well and all that [ I am away on holiday so regretfully cannot make it on the day]
Just a small point, but may be very relevant [ I come from a marketing background] but there seems to be no reference to when the event is taking place !
O.k for all of us oldies but for the new members perhaps the date / message should be re affirmed ?
Weather report is great for the week end Have a great time everybody !
All the best
Andy

U.K 'Extreme Caches'
http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...ae-e0f56c7c6c5c
A comprehensive listing of those caches involving a little bit of 'risk'
A challenge of the physical rather than the puzzle type of cache usually easily located but always just that little bit difficult to access unless one climbs, dives, crawls or swims.
Some of these caches are not for the feint hearted !
-
As I read through this thread, I see the same thing that appears on my cache logs. Someone doesn't read a cache page, and therefore feels entitlement when they don't find a cache, or are unable to sign the physical log. It happens, and we as cache owners get the flack all the time for not allowing a smiley to the "almost got it" crowd.
Simple! Read the cache page, Initial your find in the on location log book, and then jump on-line and grab credit for your good work.
I could care less about how anyone else wants to play the game. What is cheating in my eyes is absolutely normal to some others. Just don't make the attempt on one of my hides.
JMHO
Here here !

Thanks Guys
Still feel like a 'Newbie' compared with some of the stats that I see !
Just posted a US forum log about environmental awareness under 'what car do you drive' ?
Sure to raise a few heckles !
-
Fuel costs and environmental awareness still not a big issue in the States yet I note !
Does anyone want to join us on a 5/5
in United Kingdom and Ireland
