  1. I just try to blend in by not moving, If there is a convenient place to sit down it seems like people just pass by. If someone then starts looking my way I'll move along, I guess the key is to not look like you are actually where you are for any particular reason. I still don't see the point in hiding, it's really suspicious and anyone who catches you hiding is going to think your up to no good. Be they a cop, a kid, or whatever. Hiding is just down right suggestive that you are up to no good. If someone is at one of my caches I would expect them to act nonchalant, not suspiciously by hiding which just seems likely to draw attention.
  2. It appears to me that the park ranger is doing a great favor to the geocaching community. I'd welcome an approach like that. As for what one geocacher should do when another approaches, I've never heard of anyone hiding. Though I may stay back and observe someone who got there before me to see if he/she is in fact a geocacher or an inocent two legged visitor. How about "did you find it yet"? I've used that, if they aren't hunting the cache they just give you a funny look.
  3. I have to mention that while they were large orange and white markers, several of them were at the bottom of a ravine. Yes, 3 feet off the bottom hanging from a fallen tree. LOL
  4. I agree, for the hand full of people who read every single post, cross posting is a bad thing. For the rest of us it's just dandy.
  5. It is scary but it also sounds interesting. I may have to place a members only cache just to see what it's all about. I'm curious what the purpose really is?
  6. My only concern would be if they are water tight or not. My gatorade powder gets hard after a while which I suspect is from moisture getting through the lid. If they do remain water tight they should be great! I did use a peanut butter container which has stayed water tight and it's the same size. And I soaked it in bleach by the way.
  7. I enjoy finding travel bugs and moving them toward their goal if there is a goal. I'd certainly email you if I found your TB.
  8. I know some very experienced geocachers who ignore the simple rule of not trespassing and some of them even brag about it in their posts. Please add "do not trespass on private property" to the list. Doing so is not only illegal but puts the cache at risk when the land owner investigates what someone is doing entering their property.
  9. I've had the pleasure of being first to find a number of the said cigar tubes and found it quite a bit of fun seeing as there aren't any fun caches within ten miles of my house any more. In fact I plan to go find the seven new caches the new guy placed this weekend and I know I'll have fun searching for them. The real fun is in the hunt afterall. I much prefer these over multi staged caches that require returning home for research between stages. That's just crazy to me. I've driven by a number of those in favor of unting for micros.
  10. quote: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Greenback: Wow, I'm glad my recent run-in with the Westmont Illinois police didn't go that far. All I did was pull into a parking lot for five minutes, then pull out and leave, they felt it appropriate to pull me over for that. What would they have done if I had gotten out of the car with a plastic bag. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where was the parking lot? And did they tell you why they stopped you? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There is usually more to the story isn't there? Actually it was a strip of offices in a very heavily traveled area, though it was 8pm. The business next door was open. The police said they were patrolling the area as there had been a number of break-ins. I don't have any complaint, I'm just glad I never got out of the car as I'm sure they would have swarmed in. The cache was actually archived with zero finds and I tend to stay away from urban caches, now more than ever.

  12. I'm not all that proud to mention this but, I made three trips over a twelve our perior to find one cache. That was when I was hot for the idea of being first to find. 20 miles each way for a total of 120. Most miles in a single day was 385 to find twelve caches.
  13. I've gone caching with friends and family which is fun but not as much fun as going with someone who's as hooked as you are. Those are some great caches you guys found! ps... I found a cache with a supply of centaur dessicant packs. What a cool idea for a trade item
  14. I think its an interesting idea, hope it works out.
  15. In case you aren't watching the I&M Canal cache... I reviewed the log book to see who logged visits from 7/5-7/21 as per the TB owners request. On 7/12 Genius Loci was there and didn't mention the TB, but I see Genius Loci didn't log the find on the web, so I'd recomend you at least contact them to see if the TB was there. On 7/21 there is a log entry signed Kurt Makary, Chris Bloun, Dan Mogan all hand written and spelling is my best guess. They noted that they took three things but none said Spiderman or TB, and then following their entry on 7/21 was TODOC who mentioned that the TB wasn't there. I've not had the best luck with TBs myself, hope Spider turns up.

  17. Thanks for the thoughtful replies, you got my question quite right, and I've been working along those lines. In my cache Earth From Above I had one person who got half the question right, and I could tell by a follow up email that he had been there. In another I was only given information that could be obtained off the internet so I asked them to provide more information. Instead of providing more information the person removed their find but whined about it. So I wanted to make sure what I was doing was reasonable. Is Iowa in the midwest? LOL
  18. I've found one Georged bill and when I went to register it, the site said it had never before been registered. I've registered several more bills and left them in caches and spent a few of them as well. In three months not one hit has been recorded. BTW, I've tried the bookcrossing thing and haven't gotten any hits there either.
  19. I'm hoping to hear what everyone thinks about creating and maintaining virtual caches. First, if you ask for specific information which can only be identified by going to the posted coordinates, should you accept someones find when they provide totally incorrect information? Would you accept a description of the general vicinity? Second, I've seen lots of virtuals where you could read them and go find them without a GPS. Should virtual caches have a twist to prevent someone who doesn't have a GPSr from simply posting that they found it because it's obvious where the virtual site is? I appreciate any and all comments, thanks.
  20. If you need more participants in getting this launched you can count me in, I'm new but I already spend more time geocaching than everything other than work and sleep and, at work I talk about geocaching and in my sleep I dream about it. Once your dead it's not worth living.
  21. Is it the signature field? Mine is blank.... so I typed something to see what would happen. Once your dead it's not worth living.
  22. When I signed up there was a field for a personal or favorite quote. I entered something and every time I post a message it adds that quote. I found another quote last night and I'd like to modify my account so that this new quote appears. But I can't figure out where I can change this quote. Any suggestions? Once your dead it's not worth living.
  23. For those of you watching this forum. As soon as I heard that Michael Moreth had posted a message to the site I sent a request to the admin asking that control of the web page be turned off for me and turned over to Michael Moreth. There have been various conversations between all the involved parties by email and within the forum, and I'm looking forward to the web controls being turned off for me. My only intention was to respond to the admin request for someone to adopt the site and to insure that it would continue being the fantastic cache that it was for years to come. Thank you to everyone for your positive comments and understanding. Once your dead it's not worth living.
  24. My apologies for being in the forefront of this mess. As you go through life you live and hopefully learn. This has been quite a learning experience. I only wish my subject line were true in this case, as Michael Moreth's site is (was) quite possibly the best site for a new geocacher to go to. Once your dead it's not worth living.
