Now THAT'S a real man.

That's actually not a good analogy. I would actually have no problem putting a stake in one of my own trees. I know it's not going to kill the tree. My mom has the cutest set of eyes, nose, and lips attached to a tree in her yard. However, I don't think she would dare put the same thing on a tree in a park. No, what I mean is, what would you want STRANGERS to do to your property? Not to mention frustrating because it's supposed to be a given that the cache we're looking for is not buried. If people know it's buried, won't they be digging holes all over the place?
-
If the tree was in your own dooryard, what would be ok? A thumbtack? A tent stake? That's one way to decide how far to go. Another way to look at it is, what do you think the general public should do? Then don't make an exception for yourself.

I think it's horrible to dis a topic just because you have seen it before.

It's 3. We are easily distracted. One time we were running out of gas so we had to let some go by. And then we passed by a bait shop that was alos a diner and well, ya gotta stop there. then there was the time we couldn't find Wisconsin.

I don't know either but here's the site I use to find the waypoint by street address. Maybe you can adapt it if you know any streets in your target county? http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map?form=address

I agree, but my 22-year-old son thinks I'm a ghoul because of it. Although he did willingly come with me recently to gather historical information for a Civil War virtual cache. It was the first time I dragged him into a cemetery where he didn't act like he was afraid I would leave him there.

We all have our challenges. There does seem to be a mildly popular misconception that machetes are evil. What may have appeared to be actual cutting and slashing of grass in my silly Recon Cache Teaser video was actually me just laying the grass aside with the broad side of the blade (machetes have three distinct striking surfaces...too much detail for here). And the dead branches I did whack...well, they were already dead. I'm tempted to make a great comparison to some false beliefs about guns here, but we don't want to derail the legitimacy and fact-based issues of the OP's intentions, now, do we? Rest assured that the machete usage depicted in my video represented no permanent damage to any native species of tree, grass, or plant life of any kind. Bet it leaves a heck of a geo-trail though

It's not print or video, but Here's Mine You can use some of the sound on a slide show or Powerpoint presentation if you want.

I'm still new at this but I gotta believe permission is the way to go. I have seen on these boards the havoc one CacheCop can cause, and I want to head them off at the pass. I've had success recently with a one-two punch: Can I set up a hiking activity on your trail/in your park It's a GPS hunt. Families love it. I stole "GPS Hunt" from that youngster in Washington who's been promoting his little flm. Not a great movie but it's a good phrase, wherever he got it from. I haven't got them all placed yet, but permission is secured. Since the city where I live is quite saturated, I went to my hometown, only 20 minutes away, where there was not one single cache hidden. After I started asking around, one landowner even asked if I would come and hide caches on his property. What are your permission success stories?

Yikes, I want to have to click a button. Most of the time I don't see the page til it's in my Pda, and I use Mobipocket so there's no chance of seeing the hint accidentally - but sometimes I do look at cache pages online and I wouldn't want it automatically decrypted, or posted without encryption. I like to try searching without the hints first. Don't get any ideas about changing the system!

Legal To Place Cache In National Forest? Wilderness Area?
Kacky replied to nancywyatt's topic in How do I...?
I think this one is run by The City of Richfield, Minnesota (The city of Richfield's Wood Lake Nature Center) and not the Fed's..... major difference. has anyone asked? -

In some places, the staff are the ones placing caches. Maybe you could get the rangers to do it too. Here's one -

I'm thinking of having my dentist install one. -
Dave, don't forget church cemeteries, and also town ones that are only open if you have a relative or friend there. There's a huge cemetery near me that doesn't allow anyone unless you are visiting a specific grave. And even then, there's no strolling allowed. It's owned by the parishioners of a Catholic church.

The jewels are actually a lab-created kind of diamond. They just heat the remains til it solidifies. It's not cheap! Or you can also put some of the cremains in a little vial that stays sealed. People wear it as jewelry but you could make it a travel bug and hope a collector doesn't take it out of circulation. That might be less creepy than asking people to spead some.
-
That's my fear, that there's one in every crowd. So if I err on the side of caution I might get turned down, but their minds can be changed and you'll have foiled the town cache cop. And her issues are not about caching anyway.
-
We can agree to disagree on that. I went ahead and asked, because there had never been a cache in this town before and I wanted to start off on the right foot. One of the things that annoys me about parents and bureaucrats is that maddening tendency to say no to any new concept. But I had a plan B, which was that if they turned me down, they'd get a nice package with a further explanation and a map showing all the caches in the next town, and a promise to ask again soon. I was pleasantly surprised. I went to 3 different people in 3 different offices. Everyone's face brightened when they heard the idea and I got carte blanche. I can sleep at night knowing I got to them before any cache cop. Amen!

Critters might tear it up if you put treats in, but I have seen themed cache listings that have dog toys, dog-related swag and gift certificates.

Glarigot, try this: Bring up your profile and click "edit your profile". Scroll down to " your photo" and click on "choose profile image". Any photos that you have uploaded should be sitting there. Click the one you want . A copy of it will appear a little further up on the screen with a button that says "select photo". Click the button. That should give you a profile photo. Hope that helps!

Help With Getting Permission To Place Caches...
Kacky replied to Skillet68's topic in General geocaching topics
LOL yah, nice way to get on their good side for future placements. There is some great advice in this thread, especially the demo container and the map. I went to my old hometown and showed them on a map how many caches are hidden in the next town, and they were more than willing to join in. What if you send them a nice packet with a letter thanking them for their time, and including all of the above in case they would like to consider it at a later date? Maybe "a later date" will happen right away! -
Good point, but what if it's the cache placer who's ruining it for the rest of us? If they're placing without permission and those caches get removed by cops or whomever, then what if the city uses that as a basis for rescinding permission on all caches?
