  1. Thanks for the advice! I did ask him to delete the info. I'll give it a couple days then delete it myself if he doesn't do it. HamsterMom
  2. A newbie cacher posted the answers to my cache on the log instead of emailing them to me - He encrypted it but I don't want folks to cheat just to up their finds. It seems to be a popular cache and I don't want to have to disable it - can I edit that post to delete the information? If not what can I do short of disabling the cache? I am planning on contacting the person and asking them to edit the information out - but what do I do if he is unwilling to do that? Thanks - HamsterMom
  3. I have used the term Muggle and Geomuggle but have also used another term from HP. Squib - in HP, Argus Filch is the Hogwarts caretaker who is non-magical but from a wizarding family. In using the term in reference to Caching - I have a 21 yr old who does not like to cache - If we must bring her with us she prefers to sit in the car while we find the cache - therefore - she is a Geosquib - a non cacher in a Geocaching family!
  4. This morning when I got up to check on the e-mail there was a message in the box. Goldfinder has archived the cache based on my note on the cache page. The cachers in this area seem to be good about paying attention to what goes on with their caches and I am pleased with the outcome. I still have the cache on my watch list so I can get it as soon as it comes available! Interesting to see so many thoughts on the issue - I have to say all sides make very good points!
  5. Thanks for all the advice! I went ahead and opted for posting a note. We do have a perfect record for finds and decided to keep the record clean! I have added it to my watch list so if access becomes available, we will be able to run down and find it! Beth
  6. We went to find a cache last night for the purpose of trading out a TB we needed to send on its way. When we got there we found that the cache was not accessable. The cache is located in a park in the process of being developed. There was orange fencing across the access point and No Tresspassing signs posted. My question is - do I have to log this as a No Find or should I just post a note? I am sure the cache is still there - it was logged as found just 6 days ago. I am not sure if the fencing is a recent addition or if the previous finders have been ignoring the signs - We were not willing to break the law to get to the cache. Thanks for any advice! Beth
  7. We have only done 9 caches and have found regular, micro, virtual and this past weekend, our first multi. Because one of our team is disabled - sometimes he can hike, other times he can't, we enjoyed the virtual. We placed our first cache - it is a virtual and people are saying they never knew that the item they need to find was there. We were surprised when we saw that there was no cache there already - that is one reason we put it in. It is a great cache for someone in a wheelchair/stroller and people who work downtown can catch it on their lunch break. My point is that to keep geocaching a family thing, there needs to be all kinds of caches as well as a variety of difficulties so everyone can participate. Don't get offended because someone didn't like the fact that you placed a virtual - it probably isn't his thing but could be just what someone else wants! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 9. Thanks, I edited it so my eamil addy isn't on the page, but this is what I was going for http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=44092 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 10. This is probably a stupid question ! not to mention it has probably already been asked. We just created our first cache - a virtual which was approved. Because it is a Virtual, the participants need to email me. I included the email on the cache page but I don't want the email on the page. I have seen others where it says "email me" which when you click on it, brings up an email form. How do I do this? I have looked over all the faq's and this was not addressed. Also I thought a while back it was decided that there would be some way to add icons to indicate various features such as Handicapped Accessable. Thanks!
  11. It well known that Skeeters are really attracted to bananas. If you want to reduce the chance of being bit by the mosquitoes, don't eat bananas before going out in the woods. Here is one place where I found it. Look down towadrs the bottom. http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/2490/Animal.html xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 12. Has anyone else seen the scene in LOTR where the 4 Hobbits hide under the tree roots when the dark rider is looking for them? All I can think of is Great Place to hide a cache. Also what about a Foot Fungus Cache where those huge stone dudes are on each side of the river. On Harry Potter I thought about a cache in the yellow school bus floating up the river but then I was reminded it would be a moving cache and you couldn't get coordinates! Anyway, you can see the bus in the scene where Harry and Hagrid first come into London after leaving the hut in the sea. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 13. Maybe the Tagless TBs will work better than the others for the following reason - Auto makers no longer put those old style hood ornaments on cars because the teens about 12 years ago, decided that it would be fun to steal them and wear them as jewelry or add them to collections. I've even heard of people who collect hotel room keys of the hotels they stay in. I would assume that amassing a collection of TB tags is the reason most TBs go missing. It can't be that they want the item (unless it is very unique) and they can't reuse the tag because of the tracking number. It just seems that the most likely reason is to collect the tags, I can picture some person with a bulletine board with dozens of tags hanging from it. With the less expensive print out tracking numbers, it might be less of a draw for the tag collectors. What do you all think? The picture is a cup o' hamsters (literally) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 14. Anything to help those of us who are caching on a budget!! With the cost of gas and fast food (for 6), it can get expensive to travel to a cache site once you have gotten all of the local caches! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 15. I have those pens with the neck cords. A great way to make sure the pen doesn't get seperated from the logbook is to loop the neck cord through the spiral wire. It would also work for the cache logbook too, since there was a thread about people taking pens and pencils meant for log signing as trade items. It would let people know that it is not a trade item. I have put some of these pens in all of the caches we have found so far. I buy them Wholesale but they normally sell for about $2.00 each. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 16. Has anybody noticed the picture in the article? It doesn't exactly look like she is hiking an any trail and the photograher probably had to damage some rare habitat or plantlife to get the picture! Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 17. [Not sure how that one should be handled. Reminds me of that cave in France with the prehistoric paintings. When they found that the C02 people were breathing out in the cave while looking at the paintings was causing harm to the artifacts, they just closed it up. Maybe they should put up a 100 Square miles of fencing.] Wasn't there a museum a couple of years back that wanted to ban all elderly folks because they were ruining the paintings with their flatuence? I guess geocachers are the new target of the PC crowd. Sure, I love the forests and nature and all that, but I don't think God (is it pc to mention Him?) put them there to be looked at in pictures and not physically enjoyed. I don't bushwhack or destroy the land but I'm going to enjoy life. Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 19. I'm not having any problems with the Mapquest maps probably because they open in a new window. I have noticed that the State Cache Maps are not working since yesterday. It will generally open the first map but when you try to zoom in and identify, the pages can't load. I guess for now I will have to find a zipcode locator online and do zipcode searches Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 21. In the Fall, you can buy those foam pumpkins from the craft stores. They come already cut (Jack-O-Lantern) and not cut. They are thick - Maybe 3/4" and are hollow inside. They Look VERY realistic. I think that would be great for a cache hidden in a pumpkin patch. My other idea is that they have that textured paint that looks like stone. That would be a way to make a rock cache. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 22. I have a regular sized spiral notebook. I record the name of the cache, coordinates, who was with us, the weather, what we traded, any interesting things we saw or did and how many frames are left in the cache camera (so the cache owner knows when it might be time to replace it). This seems to be working for me to recall so I can record the find and also as a diary. One of our finds the other day was too hot to spend the time to see the geological feature of the area. With this diary, it will be easier to know where to go in the spring to see it then. Hamsters - buy 2 get 10 free! 23. I was just thinking that this would make a perfect match - Anyone who has ever been to Germany will be familiar with Volksmarching. People go on organized hikes from 5 to 42 kilometers. There are usually 1 or 2 checkpoints on the way (waypoints to get the next checkpoint?) At the end, everyone who finishes gets an event medal and gets to enjoy a biergarten (BBQ?) I know they have volksmarches in the states, we attended a night-time Christmas march on Olympia WA many years ago and had a great time. I know this would be easy to convert to a geo-event!
