We may fight a losing battle against the park and rec but some of us choose to fight anyways. Those of you that choose to roll over and let the "man" have their way with you may thank us in the future for our willingness to fight for a activity that we love. It is not wrong to show outrage and dismay at something that you feel is unfair no matter what anyone says....

Um, OK. The city responded in a clear, thoughtful manner and resolved the issue in a way that was fair and workable to both sides. You seem to be ignoring the city's legal position. In this world of daily moronic lawsuits the scenario the city laid out is almost sure to happen. If the city gets sued and loses they have to pay the winner of the lawsuit. There goes funding for the park and could result in the park's closure. A long shot scenario to be sure but in this day and age anything can happen. If mature compromise is viewed by you as "giving in to the man" ( icon_confused.gif )then I'm afraid life is going to be full of disappointments for you.

I feel safe in saying Colorado is big enough that you can find a suitable place for your cache if you're not happy with the park's ruling.

You have a nice day now, ya hear!

  3. I thought the city of Colorado Springs explained their reasoning for limiting caching quite clearly. While we may not like their ultimate decison I believe it to be more than fair and should be viewed as an acceptable compromise.

I also thought lullabud's response was immature and bad for geocaching. Such a response will not alter the city's stance on geocaching one iota except perhaps to make them ban it altogether in their parks. Insulting them will gain you nothing.

Just my two cents worth since you asked.

  4. From the Forest Service...

    FOREST CLOSURE LIFTED (July 12th)

    FIRE RESTRICTIONS STILL IN PLACE

(Alamogordo, NM)—Lincoln National Forest will lift the forest-wide closure on Friday at 8:00 AM. Existing fire restrictions however, are still present and will continue to be enforced. These include no open fires, no smoking except in designated areas or enclosed vehicles, no fireworks, and no charcoal or barbeque grills. UL approved stoves, lanterns, and heating devices can be used.

Keeping the forest available and open to the public is important, but keeping the forest safe from fire is the top priority. The recent minimal increase in rainfall has made the forest once again available for public use; however, keep in mind that there is still not enough rain to safely lift fire restrictions. So come visit and enjoy our beautiful forest and our local communities. Please, let us all help to keep it safe.

  5. Just heard on the radio that Cibola Forest will open tomorrow (July 16) at 8:00 AM. Certain fire restrictions will still be in effect. They say they have nearly 3,000 "closed" signs to take down as well.

  6. I used The GPS Store to purchase my MeriPlat and accessories. I did a bit of price comparisons online and found the package deal offered by these guys provided me the most for my money. All was delivered as promised and I would definitely do business with them again. Good luck!

  7. Through the help of others on this website and a couple hours of manual changes, I have completed assembly of 305 Sandia Mountain waypoints into a .wpt file. The list of waypoints can be found on Mike Coltrin's Hiking the Sandia Mountains in a Year website. If anyone wants a copy of the file emailed to them just let me know.

Hmm.... I wonder why that happened. It loaded into my copy of g7towin just fine. I didn't upload them to the GPS, only because I have no interest in those 300 waypoints.

The errors occurred in G7toWIN while I was doing the upload to the GPS. Importing your csv file into G7toWIN worked like a charm.

  9. I used Mitch's Excel csv file to import the waypoints into G7toWIN. It spit out about 200 errors... all were "oops blah blah blah not written yet" messages. I just kept clicking OK and it went through all 305 waypoints. Once they were in G7toWIN I sent them to the GPS and then downloaded from there into Mapsend TOPO USA. All 305 were there but the elevations all read either 174 feet or 0 feet. Weird. I ended up manually changing all of those by clicking each one and getting the Mapsend elevation reading. Also the last 1/3 or so of the waypoints lost their descriptions somewhere along the way so I had to enter those manually as well. All in all took me a couple of hours but I have them all saved in a .wpt file now. If anyone wants a copy let me know and I'll be glad to forward it on.

Thanks again to all those who offered assistance. Much appreciated!

If you download that, it should import nicely into g7towin. From there you can upload it to your MeriPlat.

Thanks Mitch and Craig! I've downloaded the sandia.csv file and will try getting it onto my MeriPlat this evening.

  13. I'm looking for suggestions on the easiest/quickest way to import all 300 Sandia Mountains waypoints. I've tried EasyGPS but it won't import. I've tried G7toWIN but get numerous errors during the import (I had it configured to Magellan and the right baud rate).

I have a MeriPlat, Mapsend TOPO USA, and am running Windows 2000 Professional.

While I'm at it, is it even wise to have this many waypoints on the GPS at once? Will the icons be overwhelming on the screen?

    TIA,

I'll probably be buying the GPS in the next couple of days. Do you think I should buy it online? Can you recommend a web site?

Should I shop locally at a sporting goods store?

I usually buy things online but I'm not sure what's better in this case.

Mitsuko, after doing a lot of online price comparisons I bought my Meridian Platinum from The GPS Store. Everything was delivered as promised. I would do business with them again.

  16. Me and the wife found our first one this evening. Just got the MeriPlat yesterday so I think we did OK even if it was a 1/1. Best of all we ended up taking a small cheese wedge from the cache. Mmmm, love the cheese!

  17. I just got my MeriPlat. I had also ordered (from Newegg.com) a POI

TravelFlash SD Card Reader/Writer. The SD card reader/writer has a

built-in 16MB Flash Disk. I am running Windows 2000 Professional.

After running the install from the included CD for the SD card reader

I can save data to the 16MB Flash Disk portion but I do not know how

to see or access the 32MB Sandisk SD card I have in there. The SD

reader/writer shows up in Explorer as "Removable Disk (Ficon_smile.gif but only

has the 16MB capacity of the Flash Disk. I can't seem to accesss the

32MB SD card that's in the TravelFlash. I know it's inserted properly

as it will only go one way. The Sandisk SD card is recognized in the

MeriPlat so I know it is OK. Anyone else have one of the TravelFlash

card readers that can enlighten me? I'm sitting here doing a serial

upload of an 18MB map now and it's taking forever. I hate to have

this SD reader/writer and not be able to use it so any and all help

    is greatly appreciated.
