  1. Pretty spendy for what they have. $8.95 for a nano blinkie that can be had elsewhere online for $1 however i DESPISE online and all the ripoffs. so i overpay but GET. I personally do not purchase nano blinkies, but I have purchased the "trackable starter kit" for some new cachers that I know, and I have purchased the premium member gift card several times; also things like replacement log strips, patches, etc; little things that I like to give as raffle prizes for events, and presents for my friends and husband, etc. I think they're nice gifts; and the REI outlet here in Eugene doesn't have bad prices. I like that they have some trackables for sale too. That's my review there...
  2. I'm sure this is pretty region-specific, but: Plastic Folgers coffee cans! I cannot stress this enough. They may look like great geocaching containers; they're so inviting with their extra wide mouths and nice size, and easy to remove lids, but they are a bad choice. They are not water-tight in the slightest. I even found one once that had a moldy once mushed now a dry molded cracker of a logbook in the bottom, and three black widows living in it. EW. Not good. Ziplock bags with duct tape on them. Really? It's not even a container. I know it's flat and all, and if your goal is to hide something flat, I can understand, but they just don't last. There are others too, like duh, a cardboard pringles can, but the coffee cans and the camoed ziplocks are one of the not so obvious.
  3. Yes! This is what I call "ruining the game for everyone else," and I imagine it HAS caused a big problem for cachers in your area. I am all for getting permission, and I think it's important when it's necessary; but this is a mess.
  4. Hey, The Jerk was a funny movie! I love Steve Martin. In all seriousness, I hope this cacher finds a way to learn geocaching ettiquette, and I REALLY hope he/she finds out how to log and move that poor geocoin. He / she is a good example of why some folks need geocaching mentors when they first begin caching Glad that the CO / OP has a lighthearted attitude about this.
  5. I actually admit that I like the geocaching section at REI... it's so convenient.
  6. I think there's someone who has a bookmark list of unfound caches, but I can't for the life of me remember who it is... I could look it up when I have a little more time.
  7. After reading more of this thread, it does at least on the surface appear that you are sort of paranoid, and I have to agree with snoogans. I of course don't know if that's true or not, since I don't know you, but it does appear that way from what you have posted here. That being said, my advice still stands; try to let it go and don't let it ruin your experience; maybe take a long look and think about the situation. Are you giving this person some reasons to act this way? Having been on the forums awhile, and after meeting Snoogans in person I trust his opinion, and if he says that this other person is a good cacher and a good person, I believe him. Maybe contact this person and extend and olive branch. It looks like you are a fairly active cacher with great stories, maybe you can find something in common with this person. I would think that would be the most productive way of handling this rather than accusing him of all of this stuff that you can't really know for sure about. A teacher of mine once told me about what he called "critical conversations" and the stories that we tell inside our heads. In situations like this, I try to turn off the stories inside my head, and even if I'm scared, I will just sit down and talk to the person who is bothering me, and almost every time the outcome has been positive. And as for the original topic, no, this has not ever happened to me. 99% of cachers in my area are wonderful people. There is some drama, but we're like a big family. I can probably only think of one person who I don't choose to associate with, but I would never wish bad things upon that person, nor would I have a problem with them finding my caches, and I would probably hunt theirs, etc. Edited to add: If this situation did happen to me, I don't think I would get so upset about it. I wouldn't consider it to be "HUMILIATING." I guess I would just let it go unless the cache owner emailed me with concerns that I didn't sign it, and then I'd go take the picture of my log. It just seems like it's not that big of a deal.
  8. I think the point was that he didn't want to write it down in a notebook, he wanted a form to fill out. Anyhoo, I've made him a pdf that he can print out. Didn't cost him a dime, and I was happy to help
  9. This is fantastic! I love to read stories like this. Amazing what can happen when ya just ask, huh? Good for you!!
  10. My hubby rides a 2008 Harley Sportster, and has cached on it, but has not yet purchased a decent mount for the handlebars. I believe it's on his wishlist though.
  11. My avatar is an image I created myself in photoshop, it's the geocaching colors with our caching initials, and two simple symbols that represent Nymphs and Satyrs; which are creatures from Greek Mythology who frolic in the woods (basic definition).
  12. I emailed the cache owner and asked. And let me guess, you just happened to mention the fact that it was being discussed in the forums? It sure appears that way, doesn't it?
  13. I say if this is how the OP wants to do things, that's fine! I would think if he's got a piece of paper that he takes with him it will take him about the same amount of time to write on the paper than it would to log it into his GPS as a field note, or scribble something in his PDA... why not?
  14. A-yep, don't let someone else's bad attitude ruin the game for you! What matters is, you found it; you know you found it, the CO is letting your log stand, and it's all good. If that other guy wants to be a jerk, then that's his loss and his problem. It's geocaching, it's not like you're going to lose your job because someone slandered you, or the person is stalking your child; they're just being rude. I say let it go! Edit: As for the OP being antisocial, I don't get that impression from her profile. I actually love that she posted all those pictures on there, they're great!
  15. I'll answer you one more time. Cache hiders hide their caches as they wish to. They do not need to get your approval prior to hiding a cache. If you do not like their caches, you are free to put them on your ignore list. That's actually why there is an ignore list. You are not required to find every cache and you are not showing your best when you ruin the game for other people. A-yep! The ignore list is there for a reason. You don't need to find every cache, and every cache does not need to be placed just the way you like it. The beautiful thing about this hobby is there are tons of options. There is something for everyone!
  16. You would probably have to ask the individual person that hid it that way. Just because you wouldn't hide something somewhere and don't understand why someone would doesn't mean that another person would avoid that place. There's a local cache in our area that I personally find to be in a sketchy place, but several other folks have found it, and love it; and I think it has like 10 favorites or something like that. So, I don't like it; but does that mean that I question the motives of the person hiding it, or want to get it archived? of course not. Obviously they knew that some people would love to find it, and people do.
  17. Well, he did log one CITO event. At least he cares about giving back.
  18. I feel bad that this is happening to you here on the forums. I do wish that folks would not jump to conclusions.
  19. Hey! That's a great idea!! I never thought of that. Wonder if it would fly with the fizzy challenge cache owners, but I like it.
  20. Oh I see what you're talking about! Makes sense now, sorry about that. I personally keep all my notes like that in my PDA. However, if you'd like a PDF like that, so you could print it out, I could make you one and email it to you! Feel free to send me a PM. Thanks for the clarification.
  21. I think I've found four glass jars, and all were in okay shape, but I question whether or not they would hold up over time... mostly just because of being affected by temperature changes. I'm another fan of Peanut Butter jars. They are also easy to stockpile, to cammo, and some have nice wide mouths for easy swag / logbook removal, and they seem to stay dry. Some of the driest containers I've found here in rainy ol' Oregon have been PB jars. (second only to ammo cans and lock n locks). Believe it or not, those gallon size ice cream pails actually make good containers. I wouldn't have believed it myself except that I have found several that have been out for over five years, dry as a bone. I have a hide in one of them myself, and it's been out almost two years now in the middle of the wet woods and is completely dry inside. I don't recommend pill bottles, at least around here they NEVER stay dry, unless you hide them in a dry place. To the OP: Don't feel bad about asking the question, it was a good question!
  22. I wish I knew what you were talking about... do you actually write your finds down in a book?
  23. Me too! That's the way we do it.
  24. I agree, and I'm working on the Fizzy Challenge myself. Just because folks are working on the fizzy challenge doesn't mean that everyone needs to be affected because a cache isn't rated properly. Most cachers aren't doing the fizzy challenge, so I think that one should cater to the majority.
