  1. Hi all, I just returned my etrex legend c and bought the legend cx yesterday. SO EXCITED! But, get this... the micro SD card that came with it is supposed to be 32mb... I took mine out to see what it looked like and it reads "64mb"!!! Did I get extremely lucky, or could it be that there's 32mb left on it after the basemap is installed??? And is that basemap on the sd card or in the unit??? hhmmmm..... Tell me what you think. thanks!
  2. Yes, you can select from a range of categories of 'POIs' like food, lodging, shopping, attractions, etc. and optionally specify subcategories (like mexican/italian/pizza/bakery/etc. under food and fuel/post office/banks&ATMs under services) and it'll produce a list to choose from and then navigate you to it with turn-by-turn beeps and arrows. Very similar to the Street Pilots but without the voice and larger screen. Thank you very much!
  3. Hi all, I'm returning my legend C to the store so I can buy the legend CX. I'm definetly going to need the extra storage it provides. Here's my question. I'll be buying the City Navigator software to use on it and and I'm wondering if using it on the CX is comparable to how the street pilots work. For example, would I be able to put an address in and ask it to navigate me to it? Will there be a "resturants" or "hotels" or even an "ATMs" icon to hit so it could tell me the closest ones in my location??? (I'm well aware it won't be talking to me -- the Legend C would beep when I get to a turn in the road -- with 3 kids in the back of the car, I don't need another voice telling me what to do! Thanks for your help
  4. hey, is it possible to run the cd on my home computer but then also put it on a laptop (later on when I buy one)? Or even a new computer later on? We seem to get a new computer every 3 - 5 years but I'd like to keep using the same gps as long as I can.
  5. PHEW! thank you soooo much! I'm kind of freakin out over here... of course, I knew this software was going to be phased out but I didn't know when. Just this week, I saw that there were only two left on amazon.com.... idiot me thought I better wait. BIG mistake. They're all gone now and I don't know if they'll be able to get more. I found one place that has it for more than I want to pay but I might just have to pay up since I didn't jump on my chance. Thanks again guys! I feel a lot better.
  6. Hi All, Some of you have helped me a lot and I appreciate it, but now I have another question: I have the Legend C. I'm currently using the topo software as well as my base map. I need something better for street use so I'd like to get the city select very soon. I'm reading up on the unlock process on the garmin website and they have a note that I'm pasting below: Important note: Once you complete the unlock process, Garmin cannot make changes to your coverage area or give refunds or exchanges for MapSource unlock codes. Please be very careful to select the regions you want to unlock. Please pay close attention to the Unlock Policy statements and FAQ’s on this website for very important information on how unlock will apply to your specific situation. I don't get this and it's Sunday so there isn't anyone at Garmin to answer my call. I only have 24 mb on my Legend C, so I was assuming I could just put Arkansas stuff on there for now, but when I need to go up to see my folks up in PA, I can delete the Arkansas maps and load a nice trail up to PA including the areas that we want to visit. Is this possible? Thanks again, mustangSally!
  7. Yes, I found those same options last night on my unit. I even changed it to look like I'm driving a truck (vs. car or motorcycle); I also checked the box to say to keep me on a paved road. It's still taking me through places that I'm pretty sure there's no road.... tho, I did just move here 7 months ago.... I may have to check these "roads" out! My husband might want to play on them in his jeep!!! I'm pretty sure, after reading all of the help you all are giving me, that those options are for the gps unit itself and the topo software really doesn't care and will send me wherever it wants regardless. I'm sure this will all be worth good laugh after I get the new software.
  8. Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, the basemap didn't have but one or two streets out of a whole town!!! I guess I'll just have to buy the software sooner rather than later!
  9. Here's a question for ya'll. I FINALLY got my Legend C and it was packaged with the US Topo map. This map is waayyyyy better than the map that was already on my Legend C so I'm happy about that. HOWEVER, sometimes when I want to go somewhere and I ask it to direct me there (I'm currently using it for road use), it wants to sometimes take me through some paths. I completely understand that the Topo map is mainly for outdoor (out of car) use, however until I can fork out the dough for the city select software, can anyone tell me if it's possible to override this and ask it to keep me on the roads???
  10. I believe that is a very good deal! But IMHO, one of the best features of these units is autorouting! But you need street maps with routing data (like City Select) to get your GPSr to autoroute properly. That's about another $100 on top. Caching in unfamiliar territory like that, I'd say it's a must-have! yea, I've already been researching the software too--there's no getting around getting it new. That's one reason why I'm not ruling out the Street Pilots -- I'm pretty sure they already have the software installed. We'll be using the gps on the road most of the time but I want to use it to geocache as well as just hiking or bike riding.
  11. If your going to spend the bucks on a laptop and Legend C at the same time then what's another $50? Spend the extra $50 now and go for the Legend Cx with the laptop. Here's the thing... the CX is going for $299 but Gander Mtn is getting rid of their legend C packages from Christmas for $249! That includes the gps, topo map software, cig lighter plug, and the thing that holds it on your belt. It might possibly include something else too, but I can't remember what. The box also said the holder to put it on your bike is in there but then there's a tiny little sticker on the bottom of the box that says that it was a misprint and that piece is not in there (sigh). Not a bad deal if I use the topo map.
  12. thanks to you both! I guess I'll either get the legend C and a laptop (needed one for school anyway), or the legend CX (laptop can wait), OR a Street Pilot C330 for road and a basic etrex for for caching. Decisions decisions!
  13. Can anyone tell me how much map territory I can cover with the Legend C memory (24 meg, I think)? Let's just say we're using mapsource city select and I want to drive around the east coast starting in Arkansas and hitting everything from Florida to Pennsylvania. IF I shell out the dough (and I really want to), this will be my first so I want to get it right the first time around. thanks.
  14. I'm new but how do you like, "Geocaching -- if you hide it, they will come"?
