and the basemap is a bit scant on data heheheheheheheh

I can't answer your question directly... but logically the position of the north magnetic pole is tracked as it moves about, this data is then downloaded to the GPS and from this the compass works I'd love to know if anybody knows different.

I think all satallite signals are directional - why waste all that energy sending signals to Mars?

I use the Garmin dashmount - works well.

CPU inside of a GPS Receiver?
SandyGarrity replied to MtnHermit's topic in GPS technology and devices
I would guess that this a not a PC type CPU, more like an embedded system and so finding out would be interested. -
Good luck - take a map and compass, whistle, some flares, spare blankets, a tent, extra rations and a mobile phone in case you get lost

I support the view that you buy the device that is the best at what it does. A GPS is good at locating you on the planet while an ipod, or what ever, does the music bit.

Hi - looks like they gave you the info you asked for, I'd get back to them if you still have a problem.

The French Cartography service have produced some superb maps (real ones on paper) that are easy to use with a GPS. I have a Garmin and can change it to the French Grid system I would think you could do that as with the Magellan.

Virus/Malware on TomTom units?
SandyGarrity replied to Overland1's topic in GPS technology and devices
I don't understand why the chap in the artical stated that as they run Linux there is no malware! There is we are forever getting security updates for our Linux servers. -
60CSx - "Hold Level" frustration
SandyGarrity replied to markp99's topic in GPS technology and devices
Hi Hermit The location is the summit of Ben Nevis the highest mountain in the UK a good general view the height is 4406 feet and you climb from sea level, but you are much higher. Rain, we have about 120 inches a year -

I don't know the geography of your state but here in Scotland water, and boy do we have a lot of that, does flow downhill sometimes at an angle of ninety degrees to the horozontal; which is not to healthy if you are following it! l -
Considering that the GPS is a microprocessor I strongly suspect that the chip is rather specific and portability of the data is not an issue. Which still means that they still need to look at the Mapping software. Back to my point, Linux does not have a big enough mass to warrent sitting down and re-engineering all your application software (BTW I use and love both Windows and UNIX but each OS has it strong and weak points).

I've used my GPS on Trains, plains and ships it is great fun - don't plains fly in straight lines. The ship i was on got out of harbour headed 180 degree true and 20 knots for 5 hours then went into harbour. Easy navigation or what!

Do you not carry a magnetic compass? I can never understand why people go out without a map and compass. -
I do not consider that Linux has the market mass to warrent the development time. I can see Gamin saying "Thank you but, comercially it is a non starter".

Barometric Altimeter Sensor Errors
SandyGarrity replied to Isaiah 40:31's topic in GPS technology and devices
An interesting point! As a mountaineer try to keep the unit as dry as possible and hence it is always covered, the west coast of Scotland has some spectacular rain! I usually find that the unit is pretty accurate with total height climbed, but always use a map hence the GPS is a double check. I wonder what it makes of all the hot air in the pub at the end of a long day on the hill? -
Almost every microprocessor has a thermometer in it. They are used to protect the system from damage, i.e. if it gets to hot turn the unit off - WELL DONE GARMIN. Please, please, please understand the technology before criticising the manufacturer.

Repair or replace Garmin 60c housing?
SandyGarrity replied to Cerulean's topic in GPS technology and devices
Replace, replace, replace... your unit will not be waterproof and if it gets anything like the amount of abuse mine does in the rain/snow you will need it! -
Can a 60Cx be made to float?
SandyGarrity replied to DutchGeek & Lollypops's topic in GPS technology and devices
Yes. Take 1 block of polystyrene draw round the unit and carefully cut out the shape with a knife. Switch unit on and slide into block and use. -
garmin 60csx - altimeter vs. gps elevation
SandyGarrity replied to polarisprox's topic in GPS technology and devices
Every "body" is diffrent and it can occur at that elevation. -
Sub-metre DGPS units for surveying - Any Suggestions?
SandyGarrity replied to Joebric's topic in GPS technology and devices
Thanks for the link -
This is true of all navigtion you are in an area of probability! If you think of the simple triangulation that usually gives a small(ish) triangle that you should be in! I see the GPS doing the same (but with a MUCH higher degree of accuracy.

Thank you websouter. Being only a navigatior I did not understand braymon2's posting as I can't read backwards text.
