The fix seems quite simple to me: If you are going to alter the GPX format then you also bump up the GPX version number, as was done to allow attribute information to be included or not. That way older devices continue to work as expected and newer ones can use the new format. As it is now I am going to have to do a global replace every time I get new .gpx files. Also, there is a huge QA failure here and this incorrect change should be reverted immediately.

I like trying for a FTF because: There is a very good chance the cache is there. Sometimes there will be a spontaneous GZ party. I like to meet other cachers and swap stories and hints with them. I like to work with other people when hunting for a hard one; for me, fairly new to this hobby, it is a good learning experience to see what other people think to check out. There is no geo-trail or disturbed area yet, so finding the cache is a better challenge. It gets me outside early in the morning and exercising (almost all of my (not many) FTFs have been reached by bicycle).

I just got a Montana 600 and noticed this as well. Not sure if it was happening with the firmware the unit arrived with as I did a firmware update fairly quickly after turning it on. In portrait mode I see GARMIN overlapping the battery display. In landscape I see N GARMI I have done a few full resets and at various times have seen a blurry patch at the top in portrait mode and once a non-working touchable area was display (the GARMIN image had shifted so much that this touch area was showing)

A very easy solution for these FTF hogs would be to eliminate the option of receiving an email notification that a new cache has been placed. Then there would be a bit more challenge in finding one. Twice this year I happened to be visiting an area for two nights, loaded the map, clicked on a cache to get its coordinates, and saw that it had not been found yet (at the time I was a non-premium member, so no email notifications), and went out the next day and found it. To me that was a lovely reward for being in the right place at the right time.
