  1. I am having the same issues. MY GC is not being recognized by my windows 10 machine. it thinks it is the F: drive and wants me to insert a disk. so I guess I need to dust off my old XP machine, try to get it connected to the internet to download new firmware to my Explorist GC. My GC is on version 1.4xxx, so it sounds like I need to try and update to 1.7, then up to 2.5. hopefully this works to get it connected to Win 10 machine. Overall I loved how easy it was to connect and download caches in the past. I hope that I can make it work with my new PC. Once I can get it recognized by my win 10 machine, then I should be able to get GSAK to see it as well. However, once it is connected, I also should be able to run my pocket queries and save them to my PQ folder, where I will unzip them and copy to the geocaches folder on the GC. Fingers crossed that I can get my old machine to connect still. So... sounds like folks have two separate issues here and I have both. 1. GC is not recognized by windows 10 and therefore cannot access the storage on the device. 2. Communicator software not working with windows 10, thus can't use the Send to GPS function. First step is to establish the connection, then worry about communicator. if I have the connection, I should be able to copy/paste the .gpx files directly to the geocahes folder on the GC. SUCCESS!!!! Had to get a little creative. my old PC would not connect to Magellan gps site. so, I went to new PC, downloaded both the V1.7 and 2.1 install files and copied to a Thumb Drive. then, went back on my old pc and executed the install files from there. the old PC recognized my Magellan GC just fine and did the V1.7 install with no issues. So, repeated the process for V2.1 and it also worked. Now my GC is up to version 2.1. So, went back to my windows 10 PC, plugged in my GC and bingo. It was immediately recognized. copied over my .gpx files from the pocket queries I ran and downloaded on the windows 10 machine and just like that, back in business. I was really thinking that I needed to go buy a newer unit, but this saved me several hundreds of dollars. took it out for quick field test and all is well. I am a happy camper once again.
  2. 07 Silverado crew 4x4 w/ duramax diesel. This works great for now, but plan to have my 1960 something Meyes Tow'd Dune Buggy fully equipped as my new geo-rig.
  3. Scuba was my bank buster. My wife and i are both divers. I got tired of renting gear and dumped some major $$ to get our own stuff. Then, of course, there are the weekends at the ocean, the dive boat charters, the food, the tank fills, the trips to the caribbean, etc.... Geocaching is cheap compared to many of my other hobbies. Once you get your GPSr and a reliable computer connection, it is basically just time and gas.
  4. My Leatherman works great in almost all situations, but when I go really remote, I add my 6+" Old Timer Hunting knife to my belt as well. I have had it for almost 30 years and it is still razor sharp.
  5. I switch off between the poles and my staff (which is a thick broom handle with a rubber tip off an old crutch). If I am on long trail hike, I really like my poles. I picked up a cheap set at WalMart and they work just fine. However, if I am geocaching in rugged terrain where snakes and other unfriendlies might be present, I feel much safer with my staff. I can use it to turnover rocks before reaching in the cache or as a vault to cross small streams if need be. I guess for me it all boils down to where I am and how long I'll be out there. I always keep both in the truck and decide when I get there.
  6. Sorry it has been over a year. My how time flies. I did get Easy GPS working and still use it today with my Magellan Meridian Color GPSr. It works great. I set up PQ's. When I get the email, I download it to my geocaching folder. i open the .gpx file using Easy GPS and sent it to my GPSr. The problems I had were with the baud rate settings. Once I got that set properly it worked.

    PQ's by user

I have been playing around with GSAK and have found it works quite well. I setup filters based on cache owner and then export them as a .gpx file. I then load them into my DELL AXIM 51v for use with GPXSONAR and my Magellan. I just have to remember to import my new pocket queries into GSAK and I'll be good to go.
  8. I got mine at Radio Shack. It came with the Driver CD. I use it to connect my Magellan Meridian Color unit and it works great. I believe it was around $29.99
  9. I got PO while clearing it from our property before my daughters wedding. I tried bleach and calodryl. neither worked. After it blistered up, I switched to technu and calodryl. Although it did lessen the itching, it took about 3 weeks to run its course. I was a small patch on my forearm, but it was stubborn. Technu works best if you can catch it right away and wash off the oils before they really sink in. I keep a tube in the shower now and scrub up really good with it if I know I have been around the stuff. I am always careful to avoid it now, but you just never know where this sport will take you.
  10. First to get home to log it. If you are using the tracking software won't it give the FTF to the first log entry? Seriously though, I'd vote for joint FTF since this sport is all about just having fun (IMHO).

    PQ's by user

Just curious what folks think about having the option to build a PQ's by username. For example, if there is a specific geocacher that has very clever hides, I think it would be fun to create a PQ for all the hides that person has done. I do most of my caching based on PQ's now and download the logs to my PDA. I think it would be fun to load up a bunch of caches all by the same person and have at it. I realize that I can get this by clicking into their profile, but I really like working off the PQ email and having the files in a downloadable format. I can load them into my GPSr and PDA in a matter of minutes and be out the door. I posed this question through Geocaching.com and they suggested that I add it here. So... Thoughts? Do you all think this selection, by username, would be useful in the the "Building Pocket Queries" form?
  12. If I am not using my Axim X51V as my primary GPSr unit, can I still use the Beeline software to display the cache files (Descriptions, Hints, and Logs)? I have a Magellan Color as my primary, and just want to use my X51V to go paperless. Just need to confirm that this software product will work for that purpose. thanks.
  13. I have a nice JanSport pack with belt loop. It has a velcro flap covered exterior pocket, great for extra batteries and Pen, and a zipper pocket for my Magellan Color. I hold the GPS in hand until I reach the spot, then holster it in the belt pack and zip it closed. it works really well. I picked it up at REI.
  14. I have downloaded into my magellan meridian color using the above method, but noticed that I have lost the cache names. If I move the files individually using GPSBABEL to convert from .gpx format from geocaching.com to Magellan Mapsend format, then import into Mapsend Direct Route on my PC and upload into my Meridian, it works fine. I get the names. But, if I highlight a list of waypoints and download them into a geocaching.loc file, the cache names do not copy over. Any thoughts? I am using a serial cable w/ USB converter. My laptop does not have a serial port (usb only). Can I download a list from geocaching.com into .gpx instead of .loc? (I hit the check box off the right for those I want and hit the download button at the bottom of the screen. This creates the geocaching.loc file.
  15. Well, I am glad I found this forum. I am having exactly the same problem. I can display the GPS information using EasyGPS, but when I select a .loc or .gpx file and hit send, I get a progress bar that flashes across the screen really quickly, but the waypoint doesn't show up. this is frustrating. Well - After reading other posts, I have been able to get waypoints moved down by downloading the .gpx files, using gpsbabel to convert them to magellan mapsend format, and downloading them from mapsend to my magellan meridian color GPSr. Seems clunky, but it worked. I have no idea why EasyGPS isn't working.
