  1. So what do you want the speed to read, furlongs in a fortnight? At least your pints are bigger and the beer is better. We went through the same thing here. The metric system was rammed down our throats in the 70's. I was in the 6th and 7th grade and had to learn all this nonsense because the world was changing. Inches and Miles would be dead within the year. Still waiting for that to happen. I used the metric system in physics and chemistry, and now I use it working on the car. Otherwise its still feet and inches.
  2. Here is the solution to the 'Big Brother' attitude you think Garmin has: Click-Me I'm on the other side of the argument. I used to work in software development, and it chaps me to no end the number of people who just won't pay for software. Would you like it if I came over to your house and ate your groceries or took your lawnmower? Yeah, you'd be mad, because you worked hard to earn the money for those things. Well, we work hard to develop a product, and selling it puts food on our table. Because people steal it, we have to put processes in place to prevent that. Plain and simple. You want free maps? The Visitors Centers in every state pass them out by the truckloads -- no charge and they don't even ask you to sign the visitors log.
  3. Mine is doing the same thing. I had it sitting on the desk, but with a good signal, running for an hour or so, and I was seeing errors of 100 feet or more. I will also set the unit on a tripod and see what it does. I did notice when I picked the unit up to look at the tracks the wandering got worse. Might try turning the compass to see if that affects it.
  4. Here is something I ran across while looking at the autozoom issue. If you are using the Automotive profile and are on the Map page, there is no zoom level shown on the screen. If you move the cursor to pan the screen, it shows up. As soon as you select Done it goes away. The zoom level is displayed fine in the other Profiles including a custom profile I created. Anyone else seen this?
  5. OK, so we're on the same page with this. Probably something Garmin needs to fix as this would make it easier to navigate, especially in a car -- no need to fiddle with the zoom while driving.
  6. Keep in mind I only have the base maps loaded, so the unit won't do actual routing. It may, in fact, work with a routable map loaded, but I haven't bought any maps yet. Even my ancient eMap, which still works great, did the zooming. In the Automotive profile, when you pick a waypoint and tell it to go there, it does warn you about not being close to a road, but in the Geocache and Recreational mode it shouldn't try to route.
  7. When you say "not working", what behavior are you observing? While I would like to see there be a unique "zoom level" setting for caches (as opposed to all "User Waypoints") - but, when set to Auto - it seems that it is working in some 'automatic' fashion (e.g., I think caches are visible at below 3 miles zoom?) What would be ideal behavior for you - and what are you experiencing? You are thinking about the zoom level feature. That feature removes user waypoints and caches from the screen once you zoom out to the preset level, to prevent a map full of icons. That part works for me. On the other GPS units I have owned, when you tell it to navigate (GO TO) to a waypoint, the autozoom feature zooms the map out so your location and the waypoint are both visible on the screen. You see your current position and the waypoint connected by a straight line. As you get closer, the map zooms in closer, still keeping both points on the screen.
  8. As a lark I put on my Polar heart rate transmitter to see if the Colorado recognized it -- Nope! Switch to the fitness profile and poke around to see whats in there. I suspect any software to display any non-GPS data would be included with the heart rate or cadence sensors.
  9. If I recall correctly, the hints selection was always there in 2.3, but it said something like 'no hints' when you clicked it. Precisely why I got excited about the feature in 2.4. Keep in mind I dumped the .gpx files I had loaded with 2.3 and downloaded one large .gpx file from a pocket query and copied to the unit manually after the 2.4 upgrade. I posted a separate topic about the auto zoom not working, but no responses so far. Anyone else noticed this?
  10. Wow, that's a relief! Thanks qlenfg! I sure missed seeing that change. I was freakin' out in the woods today 4 miles from from my PDA (that I don't carry anymore because of my spiffy 300) when I got stumped and needed any clue from logs I could get. Another bonus! If there are hints in the log, there will also be a Show Hint selection when you click Options. In 2.3 it was always there, whether the log contained hints or not. Actually it's the opposite. With 2.4 if there are no hints, there is still an option to "show hints". With 2.3 that option was only there if there was a hint to show. I beg to differ -- note the screen caps. Firmware revision and cache without hints: Cache with hint and hint displayed:

  12. If text placed between the double quotes appears in the log, just write a script to read each line of the geocache_visits.text file, suck in the GMT time, add / subtract your offset, then place it between the double quotes.
  13. I think I did actually find a bug in 2.4. Switch to the Automotive profile -- notice the zoom level is not displayed? Now move the cursor to scroll the map -- boom! The screen is redrawn and the zoom level is now displayed at the top of the screen between the two soft keys. Click Done and it goes away again. The zoom level is displayed properly on all the other profiles.
  14. Yeah, just noticed on mine as well. Last night, I had the original one-at-a-time .gpx files I did using the geocaching page and Garmin Communicator, and they had the last 5 logs. I did a pocket query later and manually moved the file to my 300, and I can see the cache description, etc..., but no logs. Wait! I found them. Pull up your cache list. Select a cache and click the center button of the wheel to display the cache heading overlaid on the map. Click Options > Show Description, which will show the whole cache page. Click Options > Show Logs to see the logs.
  15. Anyone got the auto zoom to work on the Colorado 300 base map? Didn't try it with the 2.3 firmware, and it doesn't seem to work on the 2.4 firmware. Haven't loaded any maps yet. On older units I have, when you set them to navigate to a waypoint, the map zooms out to show both your current position and the waypoint, and as you get closer, it zooms in to keep both on the screen. I've tried it on the 300 with both a cache and a waypoint and the zoom level stays where it was set originally. I pretty sure I have it set to auto zoom, ( Setup > Map > Auto Zoom > On) and I have even toggled the feature off and back on in case the setting got farkled during the firmware upgrade, but no joy. This is on a custom profile I set up for geocaching, with the zoom level for user waypoints set to 0.5 miles. I just tried the same thing with the automotive profile with the default settings (all zoom levels set to auto) and it still does not zoom. Any ideas?
  16. To get a screenshot, press and hold the right "soft key" button. There is no indication that anything happened but when you connect to a PC the screenshots will be in the internal memory. Beat me to it. Here is the text from the FAQ: M2.) Can I get screen shots of my Colorado in action? Yes. Press and hold the right soft key (i.e. the one that is used for Shortcuts) for a few seconds. Connect your Garmin to you computer and the screen shot should be in [drive]:\Garmin\scrn\<unique_id>.bmp . The FAQ is at: http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/FAQ
  17. Its on the FAQ web page linked in other Colorado messages. Don't have the URL handy here at the office.
  18. I had about 100 caches in mine, and I did notice it took a while on the first boot, and then after that it was like a jackrabbit. I'm fairly certain they index the GPX file to make the boot faster. Add one more GPX file and see what it does at boot.
  19. I picked a cache from my list and told my Colorado to take me to it, but the autozoom did not work -- I had to manually zoom out to see my location and the cache location, and as I got closer it did not zoom back in. Anyone else seen this?
  20. Once you upload it, you need to go to the field notes page to enter your log notes. Once you do that, you can see it in 'My Account Details'. Firstly visit this page to upload your caches: http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx Secondly go here to enter your field notes: http://www.geocaching.com/my/fieldnotes.aspx The geocache_visits.txt file does contain the time -- here is the entry from my file: GC18NAV,2008-02-21T00:42Z,Found it,"" Which would be 1842 hours local time, about the time I marked it found.
  21. Here is the best charger I have found: http://www.thomas-distributing.com/maha-mh...ery-charger.php I'm also using the AccuLoop batteries in my cameras -- they are much better at keeping a charge when stored and last alot longer than the store brand NiMH batteries Great, I was looking at that one the other night and was going to ask about them. Our local Batteries Plus carries them with the charger. Now I know, and will pick one up. On another note, I found that Sanyo has issued a 2700a AA NiMH cell. Cant find them locally but I may order them and give them a try. ***************** Just be sure to RTFM before using it. Its capable of charging batteries at a very high rate (by default) if you don't set the charge rate manually. I usually use the 200 mAh rate (lowest one) and it takes 10-14 hours to charge the batteries. On the plus side, it keeps track of the charge voltage and capacity for each battery. Money well spent, in my opinion.
  22. Yes, it was the tracks on the displayed map that were missing. I went back to check the settings and turned them off and back on, and now its working. Haven't hooked it back up to the PC yet to see if I can download the tracks in MapSource, but I have faith it will work. Hope to hit a couple of caches tonight to see how it goes. I did notice the accuracy is staying around 10 feet when stopped, and 16-20 feet when moving. Satellite signal is either 4 or 5 bars all the time sitting on the console.

  24. Hmmm.... Tracks not showing up on the map now. Now that its daylight I fired up my 300 and drove to work. No tracks showing up on the map. Show tracks appears to be on in the settings and it worked with the old firmware, but no tracks today.
