  1. What's even more fun is to skip to the last page of the list and do some of the oldest caches in the state. These appeal to me cause they usually involve longer hikes than the new ones.
  2. Here is a list of famous geocachers: Famous Geocachers I'm not sure what else they do.
  3. For those of you getting ready to jump GA, This cache is on university property and the grafitti is permitted by the university. In fact they have signs that tell you where you're allowed to express yourself.
  4. Puzzle caches work like this: You solve the puzzle, then go find the cache. It's not that hard Now if you haven't solved the puzzle and you find the cache, before you log it as a find you have to do some soul-searching. If your soul thinks it's a legit find.... your soul is a weenie
  5. It's hard to believe it's me saying this just a few months ago. I have totally changed my tune now that I am a more experienced geocacher. Now I enjoy looking for micros and I broke my promise to never put out a micro. I placed my first micro cache on March 19th. This just goes to show you that you shouldn't critisize what others enjoy doing even if at the time you don't like it. I LEARNED MY LESSON !!!!!! Welcome to the "dark side" of caching. I love micros, the more devious, the better.
  6. Don't be afraid of muggles, they're silly but they're harmless. most muggles are way more afraid of us. If you make random loud noises they usually scatter. Have fun!
  7. lots of GPS info All the above posts are correct. Theres a bunch of sources for error. It's a wonder that we find stuff at all. the GPS unit gets you very close in ideal situations: little atmospheric interference, good satalite constellations, no nearby obstructions, etc. Most times you're not in these conditions. Thats when you put the receiver down and rely on yourself, start looking in the type of places that you would put it. Don't get frustrated, if the conditions stink, they stink.
  8. I visited the TC site and was a little frustrated by the "sponser" requirement. I just wanted to look around and see if there was an interest in my area, which is Raleigh, NC. I didn't want to commit to a memberhip, and take up a username, space on the server, and waste my sponsers time if I wasn't really interested. It's a little "put-offish", if that's a word. That's not meant to be as negative as it sounds. I just want a "peek" at what the site has to offer in my area.
  9. We have several caches on Historical properties in Raleigh, as well as some in cemeteries. These tend to be the most thoughtfully placed, educational and interesting caches I've done. Think about your finds. Most virtuals will be banned. Most of the urban micros left will be the parking lot variety. This legislation is well intended, but probably unneccessary. this is going to be a political "uphill" battle. Imagine explaining the virtues of "playing a game" in a cemetery to muggles. Good luck down there guys, I hope you can pull it off.
  10. That makes sense, kind of. Now I have a whole how do I edit a picture issue.
  11. Why? It's a real TB. The picture is already on the site.
  12. I did a quick keyword search: Jesus - 5 caches (I think two have at least some reverence) God - 0 caches Satan - 8 Devil - 244 Wicca - 1 Good 5 - Evil 252 - Pagan - 1 One more cache probably won't tip the scales tremendously. The Jesus and pagan camps are way behind.
  13. I hang around at all the usuals: AA meetings, homeless shelters, Amway meetings, homes for runaways, nazi rallys . Anywhere I spot a longing for acceptence in somebodys eyes I make my move. Usually after a few hours (and a meal, or a beer) the've welcomed Geocaching into their lives and are tranformed forever. Most of them go on to contribute to society by being regular forum posters.
  14. By frustrated do you mean this:Where the heck do I park I try to give parking and starting diretions if they're not obvious. I think it's only responsible to provide people with access points. i.e. "The best way into the Walmart parking lot is the right turn only lane off hwy 39" . Tresspassing is serious business. I have had guns pointed at me while surveying in the woods, it's pretty scary. I can only imagine trying to explain yourself without the work truck and survey gear. In the OPs case its a park with lot's of different parking options. I'm never upset if I walk too far in a nice park. (plus there's probably a map in the visitors center or kiosk). I've purposely given "bad" parking coords to encourage people to explore a little of the park. But out in the boonies, around private property it's different. P.S. Tpopzone and mapquest don't address issues of property ownership, and the rights of those owners to have you spend a few hours with the local law explaining "Geocaching".
  15. Southern style-breaded and fried French style-
  16. No, you should feel like you're smarter now.
  17. 35 with 1 DNF and 1 "did not try" we looked at a terrian 5 and opted out. Mostly in town micros and a few trails. 300 miles of driving. 4 cachers.
  18. I just found a cache with the cheapest Silva model compass. I carry it with me when I'm in the "big woods". I rarely use it for urban micros. It's also a good plan to learn how to use it. Whenever I get lost I do the three primary survival things. 1. Stop, don't go any further you'll only keep walking in circles. 2. Cry, get it all out, you don't want to be sobbing when the Ranger finds you. 3. Follow a creek/river until you hit a road (if you're in a wilderness or a desert area you're pretty much screwed go back to step 2.) Seriously I've been lost for two or three hours in a BIG patch of woods, it's scary as heck. Don't wander off into the great unknown with just Geocaching printouts. Make sure you carry real maps and real supplies, extra food, a lighter or matches, a way to stay dry, a cell phone and let somebody know where you're going. Sheesh, what a nag
  19. Mutt - yellow lab & St. Benard at 125 lbs he's worthless on urban micros
  20. 1. Micros & traditionals- depends on time available, i like 'em both 2. Event caches-I went to my first one a few weeks ago, Triangle Geocachers are very cool. 3. Multis- feels good to finish a good multi, but for time reasons I put them off (I think it may be a numbers thing but I'm in denial) 4. Eathcaches-I've only done one but it was very cool 5. Benchmarks-I never seem to have my camera 6. Locationless- okay, but hate to reasearch to see if someone else got it & I never seem to have my camera. 7. Virtuals-Icky, I only do them if I'm away from home and pretty darn close to it. The three closest caches to my house (16 miles or less) are virts, and I've been driving past them for 2 and a half years. 8. Ape caches
  21. I don't like 100% chance of being successful in finding a cache. More than the numbers, it's the risk of failure that leads me to find a cache. This element is missing from virtuals, so I don't really care for them. Having said that, your virtual sounds interesting and probably would be one of the better that I've seen. Sounds like a cool place to visit, so work with the reviewer and get a cache approved.
