  1. When using my Garmin GPSmap64s I change the color of the track I'm following depending on whether it's a bright day or a dull one or whether I'm navigating in the dark or not. I just choose a track and choose 'Set Color'. I confirm that the color, (eg. red) has been set by going into 'View Map' and checking that the track is now the new color. It shows me that, yes, the track is now red. However, when I commence navigation after choosing a recorded track by scrolling to 'Go', I find that no matter what color I have chosen the track is always a light blue color despite choosing red. Now if I'm following a track in darkness the light blue is perfect, but in bright daylight the light blue color is not as clear or as distinct as I'd like it to be and therefore choose red or even black. Unfortunately, even though the overview of the complete trail is now red, when I commence following the trail by choosing 'Go' I find that the trail shows as light blue. Even if I choose black for the trail, when I press 'Go' I find that the trail is still light blue. Can anyone suggest a remedy for this issue please? My chosen trail color changes back into light blue when starting navigation no matter what color I've set it to be. Thank you.
  2. Garmin firmly warns that no other NiMh batteries other than those supplied by Garmin are to be used in the 64s. Is there really any danger in doing so? I place a thin piece of cardboard from a battery package under the two NiMh batteries I use and, as yet, they charge successfully in the GPS.
  3. Thanks, Ranger Fox, you have solved my problem. I had indeed disabled the map on my sd card which I needed (Éire & British Isles). Enabling it has brought my screen to life. Thanks also for the advice on managing the appropriate number of maps on the unit, and also for the pointer to OpenStreetMaps and GPSFileDepot. I'm actually using maps constructed using OSM maps and NASA material. Further work has been done on them by the creator of TalkyToaster where any map which you might need can be legitimately had. For example, I got my Éire & British Isles maps for FREE and ALL the Canadian Provinces on two sd cards for about €139. Check out his site: https://talkytoaster.co.uk/
  4. Thank you. However, not even that can be seen. The screen shows no map, basemap or otherwise.
  5. In the 'Garmin' folder in my new GPSmap64s I have, as well as the usual folders and files, the following: gmapbmap (Disk image file) 48.6mb Is this a map file? The reason I ask is that there are no maps whatsoever showing on the unit when it's turned on. I can see any track I've stored in the GPX folder, but with no map in the background. Any ideas? Thanks.
  6. So what have you set your 64s to, Rob. Traditional NiMH or Precharged?
  7. Different battery types have different discharge rates. Some types have a fairly linear discharge rate over time, while others hold a more consistent voltage level and then drop more suddenly when they get close to depletion. In order for the battery meter to accurately reflect the remaining battery life, it needs to know what to expect. It won't effect the actual performance of the unit, but if the incorrect type is selected, the battery meter could show you with 2 bars left and then suddenly go dead or it could notify you that the batteries need to be changed when in reality they are still 50% full.
  8. The charging is activated by a switch in the battery compartment, not the battery setting. When the switch is depressed the option to select battery type is not available. The switch in the battery setting is only activated if you use the expensive Garmin battery pack which is constructed to press down on the switch. Ordinary batteries, rechargeable or otherwise, won't activate the switch unless you place a thin piece of plastic in the compartment beforehand. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Rechargeable-Battery-GPSMAP-Oregon/dp/B00B1QUF8O
  9. Thank you, everyone. That answers my question.
  10. I'm using Panasonic Eneloop rechargeable batteries 1.2 volt 2400mAh
  11. I see. Thank you. Since I use rechargeable NiMH batteries I suppose that I should choose Traditional NiMH rather than Precharged NiMH?
  12. Yes, I'm aware of the battery meter/guage at all times while using a gps. I suppose what I really should have asked is why are there different settings for different batteries? Why does the gps care what type of battery it's getting the power from?
  13. I've recently purchased a GPSmap64s and am wondering how essential is it to choose the correct setting? Here are the choices: Alkaline Lithium Traditional NiMH Precharged NiMH Thank you.
  14. Thanks, clintb. That clears the matter up for me.
  15. Thanks. I have a charger which looks almost exactly like the lower illustration. The question now is whether its output is suitable for the GPSmap64s. The literature with the unit doesn't mention a specific charger or output details. The charger I have has an output of 5.0 volts - 1000mA.
  16. Nope. Thanks. So, what do I plug into the 220 volt power outlet? The cable I have has one end connecting to the gps and the other end connecting to the usb port on my computer. Is the usb/pc connection the only way to charge it?
  17. I've recently purchased a new Garmin GPSmap64s and have noticed that one of its features is that batteries can be charged while they're in the unit. I'm wondering if an external charger is still required and if so could anyone recommend one. I've been searching online for such a GPS64s-specific charger but see no mention of one, making me wonder if there is a way in which the batteries are charged in the unit without a charger. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  19. Curiously enough, despite having 76 waypoints appearing on my map page my Waypoint Manager displays only a list of 19. Weird, I've just checked my waypoint manager on my Etrex 20 and all 42 of my waypoints show up. Maybe the 10 works differently to the 20? Apparently with the Etrex 10 only 19 of the nearest waypoints to where you are at the time appear in the Waypoint Manager. To see all of the waypoints you have to go to the map. You can, however, do a spell search and you'll find any waypoint, but it won't be on the waypoint list unless it's amongst those nearest to you.
  20. What caught my eye elsewhere was that someone could only see 19 items of something else on one of the managers. If I find a way to search waypoints outside the 19 list in the Waypoint manager I'll post back.
  21. Continuing my search on the internet, I think that the unit will only display the 19 nearest waypoints. That may be why the 19 mountains nearest to me now at home only show up. If I was in the middle of the mountains I presume that the list would then change to another 19. I tried your suggestion and did a spell search from the Waypoint Manager page. When I spell a mountain not on the list of the nearest 19 I just get 'No Results'. Is there another page where I might do a wider search? If there is I can't seem to find it. And yes, I copied the gpx file directly into the unit and was told that it was already there. This makes me think that indeed only the 19 nearest waypoints do appear on the Waypoint Manager list. If only I could do a wider search.
  22. Curiously enough, despite having 76 waypoints appearing on my map page my Waypoint Manager displays only a list of 19.
  23. Hi there, I have a Garmin Etrex H and a Garmin Legend and recently purchased a Garmin Etrex 10. Before the Garmin 10 I could add the waypoints of 76 mountains to my other two units from a gpx file quickly and successfully using EasyGPS. When I got my new Garmin 10 I decided to add the same waypoints from the same gpx file. However, when I opened my waypoint manager in the unit I found that only 19 of the waypoints were displayed. I deleted them and tried again but with the same results. I then used Garmin Basecamp to transfer the waypoints but still only managed to get 19 displayed. Curiously enough, when I went to my map page on the unit I could see all the waypoints, but in the list on the Waypoint Manager only 19 are displayed when I scroll down through the entire list. I should mention that I have over 90% of the available memory free. So, the process works perfectly with my 'lesser' gps units but not with my 'superior' Garmin Etrex 10. The waypoints ARE on the unit but only 19 are showing in the list on the Waypoint Manager. Does anyone have any idea why this problem is happening? Thank you.
