  1. So it's a bit biased, it's your magazine! You can do whatever you want o do with it. Personally I enjoy reading it. I belong to Geocaching.co m, and navicache. Guess what one I use? If I really wanted to read an article on alternative cache website I could go and find one. I happen to enjoy gc.com, so do you. I see no problem with you supporting them. Talk is cheap, if you were really worried about being biased, put in an article about the other websites, and leave it out of the forums!
  2. A few months ago I decided that I was few up with crappy micro caches and took out my frustrations in a cache log. my find was very quickly deleted. Something like this: I said that the cache was more "trash" than anything, that a paring lot was a horrible place to put a cache, it was unoriginal, on private property, and within full view of security cameras. the cache would likely give geocaching a bad name. I have had some conversations with the cache placer and we have made up I think it was a learning experience. I also made the mistake of bringing it up to the local cache group. Talk about a bad experience! I almost quit entirely and a few people left the group. "straw that broke the camel's back" I'm a little nicer in my logs now. Joe Smith
  3. About a month ago a guy in an SCI (state correctional institution) cane into work and started asking tons of questions abut the owner. I didn't give him any information at all. Why should I? Then he turns into a jerk. Asking for my name, address, phone, to file in the "record" I politely told him that If they wanted to they could easily look up my information, and until I know what i going on I am not telling him anything. The entire experience lasted about an hour and cost me a few sales to boot. The owner was freaked out about the whole thing, until I showed her that with $100 and about week I could have gotten his outfit, badge, and belt on line. He never came back. back to the subject. I see no reason to give up my rights for "safety" I may be a little paranoid, but the government has done allot of bad stuff to innocent people over the years because of the terrorist angle. Go read the patriot act, congress sure didn't read it or they wouldn't have passed it. In the situation I would have been polite, explained what I was doing, and let them know that I am not pleased about being stopped for no reason. Joe
  4. Expandable memory I'll give you (Please don't start a war over this) But if you looked at the screen of the 60c/s How could you not pick that? I looked at the meri color, out in the sun yo couldn't really see it. Joe Smith
  5. I look at it for a while, but for the price it just was not worth it for me. I have a phone and a good plan, and I have a great GPS. Because you now have a nextel phone (I guess for free) the $20 would be a nice investment. The gps is the cheap part, it's the phone and plan that they want to get you hooked on. I'd say get it, try it out, and let us know how it works. Joe Smith
  6. I think it would be the meridian Color But I'm a garmin guy so I'll ask the question. What would make you want a magellan if you're looking at the 60's?
  7. I saw that cache a long time ago and put it on my to do list. The I just forgot. If I ever get a break from class I may head up there. Oh wait, I can't because I have to read 5 chapters, create a math lesson plan, put together a group presentation, return 30 books to the library, type up my book reports, and go to the gym to train for the RCT challenge that is really starting to peeve me because it's snowing and I want to hike outside. Oh, and hide that cache that's been sitting in the jeep for a month ready to go. I hate being a student But in three days it's my 21st birthday! I might just get drunk and try and forget about all the stupid crap I still have to do to graduate.
  8. I have read many good ones in the past, but they never really stick, I'll vote for mine, even if I stole it from the Red Green show Translated: "When all else fails, play dead"
  9. I found a cache by a popular rock outcropping that was in plain sight. It was a two to one ratio of mugghes vs cacher logs. Guess what, it's gone. Another side effect is that muggles will take quite a bit from the cache, and not trade. Or they will leave the wrong stuff. I had to trash out a few 30.06 rounds and a can of snuff. Other than that it's not a bad idea Let us know how it turns out. Joe Smith
  10. The power of rivers are amazing. When they are in flood stage they have the power to change riverbeads, and carry some VERY large objects with them. An ammo can is small and very watertight. As long as it does not get trapped in some debris (very likely) I see no reason why it can't end up in the gulf of Mexico someday. Another option is that it could get crushed on something and swamp. I'd say it's gone forever but don't be shocked if you get an email in a few months by someone that found it. Joe Smith
  11. I have had a few experiences with a kayak, The first was a week long trip up in Canada. (Algonquin Park) i used a bright purple kayak (River Runner R5) It was a small touring kayah with a plastic skeg (is that right) on the rear. If you hit a rock it would pop off. I put a small carabiner on the bungee courd so I cound take it completely off for the rocky sections. looking back, I put that thing through total hell. I took it through rapids, banged it off of rocks, and even rode it down a 10 foot cliff into the water. I'm lucky ii picked that one because it took the abuse I gave it and got me home. All in all it was a good boat, didn't hold alot of gear. that meant someone else in the group had to take my pack with them. For a daytrip it would be perfect. Edited to add: EUREKA! The name just came to me in a flash! Look at a few sites, this one's a bit too expensive. At the outfitters they were selling the used ones for $200 canadian. A few years ago I got a boat from New Wave Kayaks, it's called the Attitude. It's getting up there in years and was used alot before I got it. New Wave went out of business. The boat itself used to be considered a playboay before they started to get really crazy. It's just over 10 feet, and has alot of volume for a white water boat. I really don't paddle too much with it, but used it to find two caches. It;s not reallly designed for open water so I can't recommend it for you. If you liked to go dowhstream in a very stable boat, then I'll sell it to you. I actually went through a class four rapid with it once, I didn't know I was supposed to go around it. The instructor said that in ny other boay i would have been sucked right under with the way I hit it. The boat had enough volume to keep me out of trouble and punch right through. Anyways, good luck Joe Smithlink
  12. What a shame Usually I cache alone so that's a big reason I don't do webcam (only one near me) having it on a phone would be great. I have thought about using a wireless card with my laptop at the site, but i've never really been motivated to install the software. By the way, should we consider moving the "quote" button a little further away from the "report" button. I almost sent Jeremy's post to a moderator. Kind of like tagging your boss out at a company softball game. Joe Smith
  13. Yeah, that's just a little too complex for the people who don't really know computers. You announce something like tha as #1 and people will just be corn-fused. Internet works for me Joe Smith By the way, the George Foreman Grill rocks. The fat just drips right off!
  14. The off topic forum is a special incentive (and I use that term loosely) for "premium" members. In order to assess it as well as the other "features" like Pocket queries and the like, you need to shell out some money for the cause. In this case, $3 a month. Personally I think it's worth it, you may not. edited to add: you can give it a shot for a month and see if you find the new "features" helpful or entertaining to you. It'll only cost you $3, and no tax. Joe Smith
  15. The gps will reset itself whenever you get a lock at your dstination. The time zone only matters for the time that it shows you. If you have a phone to tell you the time, don't really wory about it. Joe Smith
  16. I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but the screen on the 60cs seems to be just fine in cold weather. With the old legend, and most lcd screens cold weathe tends to slow them down. I fired up the 60cs after being out in the car all night and it worked like normal. Do the color screens handle the temps beter? Joe Smith
  17. My legend would get a "lock" inside the bathroom too. With the 60cs it will lock on alot faster and will even show when you move. It's like the roof isn't even there. Joe Smith
  18. I used it right before I got the 60cs. How come nobody told me about it sooner? The voice prompts are VERY loud, and the route will calculate alot faster because of the processing power of your PC. The downside, you have to bring your laptop. And I hate bring it along because I spill stuff on it. Joe Smith
  19. It depends on what you call "float" It will kinda float, but not like a boat. Mine floats like a rock Joe Smith
  20. Are you really a celeb if nobody knows who you are?
  21. "zero tollerence" leaves you no room for common sense. ~ Author unknown (to me at least)
  22. I've found knives in caches, and usually leave them there. Because i don't agree with placing a knife in a cache? NO, I don't need a cheap knife, I have a good one. I had a swiss army card for about a year and a half and loved having it around. After a while in the pocket it fell apart. If I found one in a cache I would jump on it in a heartbeat. If you are placing the cache, leave it in ther and call it a "First finder's prize" As for a kid finding it and hurting themselves, it could happen. usually when nobody teaches them that knives are not something to play with, they are a tool and you need to treat them with respect. Edited to add: Actually I did cut my finger with it once, so it could be dangerous to anyone. Just if you don't pay attention to what you are cutting. Joe Smith
  23. Going from a legend to a 60cs has been a real treat. Now that I have the built in compass I find myself using it all the time. The problem is that I never carry a real compass on the "Easy" cache hunts because I try to travel light. I have a small silva compass from wal mart. I think it was about 20 bucks. For a while with amazon.com the price between the 60c and the 60cs was only about 20 bucks, can't beat that. For car navigation you are moving fast enough and out in the open. Save the money. For geocaching, get the Compass Joe Smith
