  1. Have fun And thanks for putting up with all this crap for so long. Thanks Joe Smith
  2. I see no harm in it. maybe I can convince the old lady to go have fun. I could finally have some peace and quiet around here. Joe Smith P.S. Don't tell her I called her "the old lady" she'll kill me. or worse, cut me off
  3. remnds me of an optical illusion I found on a gps site [edited to remove picture this is family friendly site]
  4. NO woman can go hiking in five inch platform heels! (I'm sure someone will prove me wrong) I'm sure she used "normal" shoes to get to the cache site. Her heels are "appropriate" for the situation at hand: looking sexy on a rock. Now what happened to her left sleeve? Joe Smith
  5. It's hard to know sometimes when approving caches. The page could simply state the coordinates to "stage two" without the mention of a container or their location. I don't find the approver at fault at all, they have a hard job to do. when you archive a cache you try to go back and retrive the contents to avoid littering. in this case it would be hard to remove the coordinates without use of sandpaper (if it is permenant marker) and that would just be a bigger mark on geocaching. one of those darned if you do, darned if you don't kind of things
  6. The only caches I have found using a pvc pipe were actually in the ground up to the top. It just looked like the opening to a sewage pipe. problem 1 against the guidelines? problem 2 damp inside. problem 3 had to reach my whole arm inside to get the logbook and got mud on my shirt. problem 4 the petrolie jelly that was in the cache to lube the threads made everything a bit slimy. Like others have said, an ammo can is a good way to go. Joe Smith
  7. we have a bad enough time with the public thinking we bury treasure, now we go prancing around with a gps defacing property. just a bad idea all around.
  8. Allot of times when I wake up early to feed the horses I don't feel like throwing on my jeans just to take them back off in five min. when I go back to bed. I just throw a towel around my waist and go for it. Same principle as a kilt. As for cridders, they have no good reason to go "up there" but a few weeks ago i reached into the feed bin and just about grabbed a raccoon that was having breakfast. I jumped back (and screamed like a little girl) and ran into the house to get the shotgun and left the towel in my dust. I didn't even realize is for a while. my mom almost had a heart attack when she saw me run out the door with a shotgun in my hand and the you know what flapping in the wind. Anyways, How about them steelers? Joe Smith
  9. Well, I decided not to keep working with SETI at home for now. If I get a desktop I think i'll consider it. The whole thing finished in about six hours, whatever that means. The problem is that I usually leave the laptop sitting on the bed and it often gets covered by the blankets. in it's insulated cocoon it sits there and heats up to where you can't even hold it for 10 seconds. For now, i'll have to leave it up to the rest of you guys. But I am looking for a good deal on a desktop. Fast, powerful, and cheap. Any ideas? (to get it on topic:) so I can use it for running pocket queries.
  10. I was excited about that when I first saw it, and asked a friend how much it would cost to build. I don't recall the exact quote but it was rather cheap for a PC. Problem is I didn't feel like having to buy all the other stuff. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer ext... I have a laptop, so i'm good. It's fun to dream about Joe Smith
  11. The only park i've been to in Canada is Algonquin provintial park. And it is breathtaking once you get into the back country. We did a five day canoe trip (one rest day). Once you get past the first two or three lakes (about a day trip) you see very few people. That's the way I wanted it. I've never hiked there, but they have many, many trails. Joe Smith
  12. I started running seti at home today. The laptop seems to handle the "strain" well, but it's starting to get a bit too hot. I think i'll let it finish this one then decideif I want to keep doing it. The electric bills are killer anyways because of our electric floorboard heat. in the summertime it would be better for us. or if I finally get that off grid PV system i've been dreaming up for years Joe Smith
  13. good advice. The one and only time I tried to wire something directly into the power supply I did something wrong at the fuse box and my headlight fuse kept burning out. Just my luck. I took it to a local mechanic, got done right and only cost me five bucks. Joe Smith
  14. But if you look close at what it symbolizes, it may not be family friendly. but who cares, it's not a bad job Joe Smith
  15. Yes The streets on the laptop usully show up at the same zoom level, but the screen of the computer is much bigger. I forgot about Nroute, good softwate but I never used it out in the real world. Joe Smith
  16. I guess you can call me sort of paperless now. i have the 60cs set up with the cache waypoint number in the notes field so i can bring up the page on my phone if I get stuck. Usually I don't do too many caches at once so I can tell them apart and remember what I traded (usualy nothing). If I forget the gps will pu it into the calander when I mark it as found. That's not to say i don't make mitakes, I have forgotten to log caches untill about a month later when I look at the page. I'll stare at it for a while then the hunt ill pop back in my head. Joe Smith
  17. I got the chance to see a military gps up close from one of the leaders of my college ROTC programs. they keep it locked up under some tight security. I didn't get to take it outside to see what it could do but from looking at the way it was set up, and the buttons on it I think i'd use an etrex too. Joe Smith
  18. i can't think o any software that will give you big compas bearing like ont the gps, but it seems like a great way to get a bigger screen. usually i use the laptop or looking at maps. The problm s that it can be very tricky to use a laptop / gps combo in real life. It's just too bulky and heavy to carry around with you everywhere. He might want to try the pocket pc with bluetooth gps combo. That should give you a big (for a gps) size screen, with full transreflective color. Joe Smith
  19. Maybe they would take care of it even if you told them the truth. In my case, i'm 100% sure thay would not have. I had the thing for two years, and it was my fault it broke. i just needed it to work long enough untill I got a new gps for christmas. I called earlier just asking about the warranty and everything and they said that without proof of purchase they could not do it for free. I told the I got it for christmas (not a lie, just didn't give them the date) and they took care of it. The problem for me is that I just don't have the money for a new unit, i'm a very poor college student. Sometimes you just have to be a little dishonest for things to work out. Joe Smith
  20. I had a legend that was out of warranty, missing the rubber band and would not power up after I ran it through the washer. I sent it in for free, got back a new unit. Now I have a 60cs, and would send it bak in if anything ever happend to it. I didn't tell then it went through the washer, just pick a date bout 9 months ago and say that you got it on your birthday. Joe Smith
  21. I don't use a pda anymore, but there has to be something better than mobi i there isn't, i won't go back to a palm untill they make something
  22. from wha I can tell it's just the national parks. it's a good idea, but for the money and the low coverage (at leasthere in the east) it's not really worth it. If it was national, and state parks it woule be better Joe Smith
  23. I'm very excited about the "jump master" feature, even if i won't use it. I made a few jumps a few years ago, never went back to get my certification. A few months ago the DZ i jumped with had a crash. One girl died, the jump master and pilot were in bad shape. Sadly, they found the pilot at fault, and his lisence was expired. I'm not sure if i'll jump again but it's fun to play with. wow, that was off topic (just to get it back to geocaching) do you think the new feature could help geocachers sky dive accurately to a remote cache? Joe Smith
  24. Power of the future page Power of the future is going out into the world to locate and photograph people using alternative energy. Joe Smith
