  1. On occasion, when on the sattelite page of my vista cx, I notices that a small "D" appears over some of the bar graph columns. Is this D for Differential Gps (DGPS) and if so, does it mean I get better accuracy? If it isn't D for DGPS, then what is it?
  2. I can probably help with this. But one question - will your scripts work on mac osx86? If they don't that's fine.
  3. use audacity to record the message. It is free and can be downloaded at audacity.sourceforge.net. Not only can it record well, it can export to WAV, it can edit, and you can add many cool effects.
  4. go ahead and post it. maps can be wrong, and the parking coordinated don't need to be perfect. However, if I were you, I'd average the waypoint on you GPS by either using the average function (if you have it) or takig oordinates, leaving the site, coming back, taking coordinates, and repeating three to six times (do more if you like. the result will be more accurate). Take all this data and then average it (add all coordinates together and then divide by the number of coordinates takem). But go ahead and post the cache. It shouldn't be a problem.
  5. as far as the comment goes about steering clear of a barometrtic altimeter and magnetic compass for caching, I don't quite agree. Sure you don't need them, but they can come in handy, such as for caches up a mountain, where horizontal difference doesn't matert much and altitude does. The compass is helpfuil in that you can get a bearing w/o moving. However, the compass does waste battery, so I would turn it off when I am moving.
  6. I'd recommend a good, detailed map pack of your choice to take advantage of the color screen and routing functions. Also, I'd get (and got) sceen protectors (i use the fellowes writeright universla ones) and the neoprene case made for the etrex. It provides access to all the buttons and does a great job of protecting it (i've whacked my vista cx against rocks several times wuith no ill effects).
  7. i currently have a vista cx, very similar to the legend cx except that it has a compass and barometer, and I can't really understand your problem. This may bore you, but rather thn grunting it out, I went straight for the instruction manual. It was extremely helfful. The controls suddenly began to make sense!! The controls though really are that simple though. The rocker on the front is for going up and down menus and about the map screen and main menu. When clicked, it acts like and enter key. The top button on the side with two buttons is for quitting a screen or menu and shuffling through the pages. The bottom button on the side with two buttons turns the unit on and off when held, and adjusts the backlight when clicked. The top button on the side with three buttons is the zoom in button for the map. The middle button on the side with three buttons zooms out. The bottom button on the side with three buttons isthe find/menu button. When clicked, it opens up a windows-like menu for the page it is on. When held down, it opens up the find page, a page in which you cn look for POI or other waypoints. When clicked twice, it opens up the main menu. If you have any other questions, you can email me at geneticfreak92@gmail.com.
  8. What did he do that was stoopid? haha. you said "stoopid". I'm also s-m-r-t smart.
  9. either ol yeller or the geko 101 will be perfectly fine
  10. I think that it would be possible, but it could take a while (a long while). Sometimes people do no read the goals and take it somewhere else, frustrating the goals. Also, TBs frequently get lost or kept. Another thing would be thatthe people that take it there would have to be traveling, which takes a bit of luck. You may want to arrange for a pickup by somebody going say from O'hara to LAX over the forums by swomeone in your area (try the by area section). I think that your goal is doable but very ambitious.
  11. I ave a palm tungsten e2. It's a good unit wuit a nice color screen, as well a blutetooth capability. On occasion it will freeze, but mostly it is fine and resetting is no problem. owever tere is someting to take into consideration - lower-end models ave static memory, meaning they lose all teir information i te battery dies. Te e2 as flas memory, so that doesn't occur. you can also get a wifi card.
  12. Thats so cool! But it doesn't seem to show the GPS sattellites. hmmmmmmmm. maybe teir orbits are classified.
  13. Edit: oops. interpreted question incorrectly
  14. April Fool's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. Hello. I have a travel bug that I recovered a few weeks ago ( gasp) and I was planning on bringing it to texas with me when I go in a wekk and a half. I have contacted the owner about this and he said to "use your discretion. Thanks for contacting me." However, he lives in Santa Fe, NM and I was going to bring it to Amarillo, TX. The TB has no goals at all, and has 4003 miles on it. Bringing it from Massachusetts to Texas will proably give it a few thousand more. What should I do?!!
  16. The yellow garmin etrex (Old Yeller) is a perfectly fine model for geocaching. In fact, many cachers (not including myself) have found their first few hindred caches with it without ever feeling the need to upgrade
  17. I was reading another topic about how many WAAS sattelites and what number they are, and I was just wondering - how do you knoiw if it's a WAAS bird or a normal one? Also, I was wondering if the locations of any DGPS stations are known - i'm pretty sure that they are ground stations, not sattelties, therefore the greater accuracy.
  18. Is there a travel bug hall of fame for bugs that have gone a certain number of miles or completed s lot of goals? If not, what are som,e of the highest mileages you've ever seen n a bug?
  19. I believe that the coords should be directly at the cache site. Different GPSrs give different readings, and I don't know aboput you, but mine frequently shows as being in the middle of a lake when IU'm not!!! Putting the cache coordinates near the cache almost defeats the use of a GPSr in caching. ALSO, GPSr accuracy can be 30 meters at worst, so keep the coordinates at you caches!!!
  20. Oh, i have nothing against is, I just thought it was pretty funny.
  21. I'm pretty sure the D&D cards (at least certain ones) are refillabe online, so I could periodically check the balance and refill when necessary.
  22. Recentlyu on the way to a cache, myself and a few friends were ambushed by several local paihntballers believing that we were the enemy. Fortunately, we all managed to dodge all the paint matrix-style, but did get grazed sevral times before the assault stopped. I thought it was pretty funny. Unfortunately, we realized that we were on the wrong side of the lake, so we had to go back through dangerous territory... Has anyone else had a similar experience?
  23. I recently had the idea of attaching a Dunking Donuts gift card (~$20) to a travel bug and have its mission to be to visit 12 different Dunkin Donuts locations, and at ech, purchasing 1 donut, thereby having bought a complete dozen. People could take pictures with the bug at their local location. I was wondering though - does this break any of the non-commericail rules that apply to caches? The cachers wouldn't have to spend any of their own money, for there wouold be the card attached, which I could refill periodically online if it ever became necessary. But I'm not trying to advertise for D&D. I just think it would be a cool idea.
