  1. I think it would be great to have almost every Roadside America category listed, but I saw one of these the yesterday and my instinctive response was "that would be a great virtual." Shoe Trees in Roadside America. Thanks for considering - -shilfiell
  2. One thing I find very frustrating about the site is that when I list nearby caches, both standard and micro caches use the same icon on the listing page. I'm getting tired of micros and many times am looking for a place to drop off a travel bug, so it's time-consuming to pull up each listing, look for that "This is a MICRO cache" note in the corner, hit the back button, try the next on the list... If multi-caches, virtuals, and events have separate icons, why can't micros? It seems that most of the new caches placed near me are micros so it's getting harder to find the old-fashioned, big ammo can full of McToys kind of cache that I like best. Thanks for listening! -shilfiell
  3. quote:If you look for caches that you found then you'll get duplicate dates, since the search by caches you found shows the date at the top when you found it (visible to others) and the green date below (visible to you). This I do NOT like, since I frequently go back to the caches I've found to see if anyone else has found them, if they picked up any of the items I left, if they agree with me about anything I pointed out in the log - now I'll have to click on every link and open every page to see if there have been visitors after me. The date I found each cache is nicely listed for me on My Cache Page - why would I need two more iterations of the same information? -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  4. quote:Actually, I haven't heard of any "hat" caches. If The Cap Fits -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  5. Book themes are cool! I like books! But they can be made one better if you regsiter and label all the books at bookcrossing.com, and then it's like your cache is full of quasi-travel bugs. I'll always pick up a bookcrossing book if I see one. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  6. I love to find stuffed animals or beanies in a cache, but they can quickly become junk if not sealed properly - in a plastic bag, they're great! I try to bring along a decent assortment and usually end up taking something very small that just catches my eye, but what bugs me is the caches that are put out there with absolute &^*&%^&$% so that there's no difference between First to Find and Fortieth. If I find one within a week or so of placement, I do hope to make a trade. I'm working on my next and am already gathering stuff I think people would enjoy, just to make the hunt a bit more fun. I look forward to seeing what people will take! My sole hide here is a themed cache that has actually held up pretty well, probably because I warn people about the theme on the cache page and reiterate in the log book. Still, I've had people take cool themed stuff and leave junk. I've seen some themed caches degrade after one or two big teams find the cache, with each member swapping a theme item for some unrelated thing they happen to have in their bags. That's rude, I think. Sometimes TNLN is the best solution. "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  7. I was a little spooked on this one: Germania Mania OK, so maybe it was just that I was in an obscure part of South Jersey in a cemetery in the dark. My friend waited for me in the car with the headlights on the appropriate marker while I read the info I needed to log the virtual. I wandered around near the car looking at all the markers and the glowing lights on some of the graves, and I KNOW I saw the car roll backwards (on level ground, engine off) out of the corner of my eye. It happened twice. I was sober and about as mentally fit as I'm able to get. Very, very spooky. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  8. Just FYI - there's a little shop on Stone Road near Dewey Avenue in Greece that sells army surplus goods and memorabila - I've gotten ammo cans there in a pinch although they might be a bit cheaper elsewhere. The guys there are really nice and I just enjoy my visits. Can't miss the place, it's all patriotically decorated, on the south side of the road. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  9. April 12th...because the world revolves around my birthday. Proven scientific fact. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  10. ...and of course, my 100th cache was Timely's P-Cache, found at last! Next time, Arthur Curry is in my sights. And that lighthouse thing that twisted my back, too. Glad I made it to 100 and that my car lived to see it, although just barely... "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  11. I'll catch you yet, when you least expect it! Hope you don't forget all the little people who helped get you started, Mr. Lofty Achievement. Congrats, though. Good work! You must have a better GPS than I. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.

  13. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot:It seems to me that most people who use that site are just "backing up" the caches and finds they have here ... I haven't returned there recently, but the few caches that site listed in my area were all word-for-word duplicates of caches that appeared here first. The logs of the few finders were also mostly word-for-word copies. Ahhh, maybe I should place a few exclusives, then, just to give the underdog a chance! You do have a good point - I tend to copy/paste between the two. One thing I like about the other place is their ranking system that measures experience in points rather than number of finds, so that my forty caches that include some 4/4's look more impressive than the forty my friend might have that are all 1/1's. It's because of those points that I make sure to log my finds over there even if I've logged them here first. I do have six logged finds over there that don't appear here, though. And twenty-something here that aren't there. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.

  15. People come here and see more caches so when they do hide their own, they tend to post it here and not there...and then newer people come and see even more of a disparity. I like it there because in my home town there's not much difference in the number of caches on either site, and because I think the admin is a super-nice guy who takes the time to hide a few good ones himself (and he answers all my dumb questions, too). I like it here because I can find more caches in the areas to which I travel and because the forums are more active, but my one-and-only hide has been posted on both sites and I encourage my friends to do the same. I've never been a big fan of the "everyone uses it so it's best for me" theory, but in some cases it works. To each his own, but posting caches in both places hurts no one and might attract more people to the hunt. Just MHO. "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.

  17. Most of the time I trade items looking for a trinket that will go well in another cache, but sometimes I just have to keep 'em - I haven't been able to part with my Pepsi promo watch, my Kodak matchbox car, or my Marvin the Martian keychain just yet. One item that I KNOW I'll keep forever came from a very hard-to-reach cache that scared the bejeebers out of me. It's just a small cheesy plastic raccoon, but it's my personal badge of honor, too! The only other cache that scared me more was one where I was too terrified to open my backpack and trade anything, so Mr. Raccoon marks a high point in my caching career. He's staying. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
  18. I've been trying to load a state map for a few days - no luck. Hope it gets fixed soon. -shilfiell "I'm too old to be doing this" - me to nobody, from too high up in a pine tree.
