  1. I just spoke with a kid from church who works at K-Mart in the shoe department. I asked him about getting some for me. He said that he won't be working any time soon but that we should just go take them. I asked if this could be considered stealing and he informed me that they were supposed to take them out of the boxes before they go out onto the 'floor' but that they never do since they don't have enough time. In effect, he said, I would be doing them a favor by taking them.
  2. A box of the cheapest knee high nylons. I use them alot for the same sort of stuff in aquariums. Just fill up the toe end with however much you need and tie a knot in it. If I go to a store and ask for aquarium charcoal - will I get what I need?
  3. What kind of bag would you use to hold the charcoal and at the same time allow it to absorb the moisture?
  4. I came across someone having customized desiccants as a signature item. These are bags of silica (or other matter) that is used in some packaging (you may have seen small ones in vitamin packages) to keep the contents dry. I know that the fight with moisture in caches is an ongoing struggle. So here are my questions: 1) Has anyone used or seen desiccants used in caches? What's your thought on this? 2) How would I go about acquiring some of these? I did a quick search on the internet and found some industrial sites where I could buy several thousand at a time, but are retail/online retail stores likely to carry something like this?
  5. I just got a a pair of Leki Tekking Poles for Christmas. I have only used them once but fell in love right away. My wife got them at Campmor and apparently they are on sale now. Leki at Campmor
  6. The reason I am a Premium Member is to support an activity I enjoy. I haven't experienced any members only perks that I feel justifies the membership. Again, I pay the membership as a kind of THANK YOU. This is not to say that I am against any benies for membership. Other than pocket queries I am not aware of other member's only perks (MOC are just not available in my area). IMO the way to get more memberships is to keep the bulk of Geocaching free but come up with some COOL members benefits. More cachers will then see a membership as an upgrade but those who choose not to upgrade will still be able to enjoy the sport. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. 7. quote:--- Konfuzius sagt: Die längsten Wege sind unbekannte Abkürzungen. Totally off topic but... When I translate your signature I get the following: The longest ways are unknown abbreviations. I am guessing that is not a faithful translation. What does your signature file read? ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. 8. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z:Well, as it turns out, you no longer need to. The website will automatically resize your image for you. I just tested this out on one of my cache pages and still get the IMAGE IS TOO LARGE MUST BE UNDER 100K message. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. 9. We are a two parent four kid team and have been caching for over a year. What we do now is that we have a "Geocaching Box" In it are our hiking boots, extra socks and extra t-shirts a more extensive first aid kit and some other overflow items (ie extra bug stray, extra ziploc) During hunting season we also keep our orange hats and safety vests. We also keep our geocaching bag in this box. Whenever we are ready to go geocaching, we just pick up the box (currently a 40 gallon - I think - Rubbermaid container)and put it in the back of the van. Now, in the geocaching bag we keep the following: 1 pencil with sharpener 2 pens (always ready to leave one in a cache) 3 small extra log books compass (I've got to learn how to use this one of these days) Extra batteries (AA for GPS #1, AAA for GPS #2 and walkie talkies) Leatherman tool Duck tape (for repairing caches) nail clippers (I'm really not sure why we have this) small flashlight Caching goodies (various sizes) First Aid kit travel toilet paper cell phone ziploc bags digital camera (we use a Nikon Coolpix 2500) Extra camera battery Emergency blanket bug spray (28% deet - I think) Water Snacks (vital for emergency mid-trail meltdowns) ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. 10. Another quick question - how do I add a carriage return (blank line) when I edit my cache description. As it is now, if I put a carriage return in the description, it is ultimately ignored. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. 11. quote:Originally posted by Titus2_13:I can only surmise that this is some kind of joke on GC.com. The contact page says "Any input from the public that is received by Rapid LLC regarding screenplays, web sites or any other works, become the properity of Rapid LLC without any obligation." Sounds like someone from the "Read the Terms" thread. ! Unfortunately it does not appear that it is a joke. I looked up the owner of the web page and it is Jon Bushey. You will find out more about him and his production company here. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. 12. Sometimes I get frustrated with note posters. It seems that they feel that a not found is somehow a stigma and reduces their value as human beings. If you go looking for a cache and don't find it (for whatever reason) then this is a pretty good definition of a not found. I only use notes for times I return to a cache or, on one occassion, I found the location but I thought that the placement was inappropriate (you had to remove a stone in a stone wall). Other than that, just put a not found. I will say however, that if you do post a not found - please explain the circumstances. I will avoid a cache that has the last few visits as a not found - but if I read the logs and realize that they were based on low light, bad luck or inexperience then I am more willing to go for it. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. 13. Also, remember there is no such thing as a stupid question - only stupid people asking questions! ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can!"
  14. Great certificate. I went ahead and made the certificate editable so that you can scroll through the certificate and enter name, date and number of caches. You will find the certificate here. These are entirely self reported. I really like the idea of patches, certificates and pins. I will make the suggestion to our group. Also, instead of the kudos coming from GC.com, this strikes me as a function of a local GC group. Our group publishes monthly kudos. You will find a recent example here. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can!"
  15. If it is still available, count me in!! ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can!"
  16. I have edited one of my cache descriptions> Take a look here I used a html generator developed by the Texas Geocaching Association and then edited it using the description you developed. If you are interested in the generator - you will find it here. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. 17. Would you mind elaborating on what you consider 95% accessible vs. 100%? ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can!"
  18. At a recent event I asked a family who has a family member in a wheelchair what they consider to be wheelchair accessible. I asked whether it was a cache that someone who is WC bound could do from beginning to end without assistance or one that they could get to but not necessarily pickup, log-in and replace or some other variety. Since their family member has multiple disabilities, they were happy with caches where they did not have to split the team "a distance" from the cache since the remainder of the cache could not be reached in a WC. I am curious as to what your definition of a handicap accessible cache would be. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. 19. If you have Excel and Word - this kind of label is easy to do (actually - you could probably do it just with Word). If you do let me know and I can walk you through the +1 process ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. 20. Have you tried writing to Garmin and Magellan to see what they are willing to do? Often times corporations have a charitable arm and does make these kinds of donations to qualified agencies/organizations. Also, you could send a request to local sporting goods stores to make the request. You may want to emphasize that you would acknowledge them in various ways for their generosity (newlsetter, press releases to local papers, web site) the company is more likely to see this as a method of advertising as well as generating good will plus they get to help out a good cause. I know one of the park rangers in Erie, PA seems to have a good relationship with Gander Mountain and appears to have been successful in getting a GPS donated for one of his projects. Another idea is to let it be known to some of the patrons of your rec center that you are looking for a donation of this kind. Lastly, you depending on the type of organization you represent, there just may be some grant money available. You are likely to find a grant writer associated with your rec center who can give you some pointers here. Happy Hunting. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. 21. A few points here: I cache with my kids - The 7, 4 and 2 yr olds find delight in the simplest (cheapest things) ie super balls, dinosaurs, bubbles, matchbox cars, origami, cheap rings etc. When we buy stuff to leave in caches we think of things our kids would appreciate finding. I guess some would call them cheap. "one person's junk is another's treasure". It seems to me that the most junk is in the 1/1 caches - I usually don't expect too much from these. I try to leave nicer than I found. One thing that I like but has no value at all is one team's signature item - it is a small wooden block with the team's name on it. Of no value at all, but kind of a neat idea. Lastly, some of the caches are just not well maintained by the owner and so a little "spring cleaning" would go a long way in clearing out the junk. Just some thoughts. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can!"
  22. I use mine now for getting to and from unfamiliar places. I have started to convert the address I am going to into GPS coordinates as a backup. I also like having my home coordinates in my GPS (whether at home or on the road - ie. hotel or whatever) to keep me from getting terribly lost. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. 23. I just had a nice experience - I was heading out of town to a couple of locations that I had never been to. I got the street address and plugged them into Geocodeand then converted these coordinates using the free software from Mentor . When I pulled into the parking lot of the location the the GPSr was showing me 42ft from the coordinates - dead nuts on in my book. Later that day I went to the second location - again dead on. I was impressed and now will be using this method for most of my travels to places unknown. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. 24. I found the book Jeremy listed on half.com for $1.50 so I ordered it. If you get a chance check out the table of contents - they had me laughing until I was ready to ... uh, see title of book! ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began. 25. Is there any way to be notified that a cacher has posted a log? My brother and brother-in-law are now active cachers and I am keen on watching their progress. Right now I have to use one of several different ways to watch them. I am looking for something akin to the cache watch list or the travel bug notification. ========= "The Road goes ever on and on, out form the door where it began.
