  1. You can put me down for another 76CSX. I liked my last one so much I have ordered another one. Last one you say YEP someone decided they liked it and did not think I really needed it wouldn't want some worthless sleazebag to actually put up their own hard earned moo-la to get what they wanted NOOOO that would actually be what A responsible individual does.
  2. WoW, my coins arrived yesterday, that was FAST and they look GREAT. if we get a chance at the pin put me on the list for 5. Thanks GEO for all the hard work at putting this together, BTW i am interested in a benchmark only coin club if you decide to do it. Angler
  3. I thought I reconized that building, just did not register untill your history post i have been a bit busy and have not had time to visit the marker page. I have been through there quite a bit, Thanks for the peek inside it is quite a cool building , the starbuck area is pretty nice also. Wintertime, thanks for the note. yes it was quite sudden to say the least, after talking with the vet we determined it was due to a heart desease that is quite commin in boxers, and seems to have hit him rather quickley (just a few months) it is untreatable so nothing could have been done anyway. I am wondering when I will wake up and not be looking for him on his corner of the bed.
  4. Just love my 76CSX. I have yet to notice any real problems, currently running 2.71 Beta and 2.5 I loaded the new versions the day I received my GPSr. Accuracy of the unit is BETTER than I was expecting, put up against an ADJUSTED benchmark the unit had it within 2.5 Feet of the official coordinates and just 23.075 feet off of the official height. This is with WAAS disabled, untill they have WAAS fully functional i'm not even going to worry about it.
  5. I just tried this on my 76CSx and observed the same behaviour. The unit freezes for a while, then fades and shuts down. I am using NiMH batteries. This is interesting I just tried this with my 76CSX three seperate times and could not duplicate the problem.
  6. I may not be the only one to log this in the future but I am the first to find for this pipe It is RZ1552 A boarder marker between the states of Idaho and Washington in a farmers wheat field who was kind enough to give us access to his land. On a personal sad note this was the last mark that my best friend and companion of 12 years was with me to find this was on Sunday June 4, on Monday morning June 5 at 1:30 AM he passed on, gratefully in my arms. I will miss him immensely. the photo was taken hunting marks on May 29, 2006
  7. I noticed the same thing during my 10-minute initial test of the unit. This is where practice with known objects will be important! According to Page 13 of the manual: *The 4-tone audio target identification functions only in the motion mode. *The detector must be in the DISCRIMINATION, NOTCH, or ALL-METAL MODE. From Page 14: *If the target identification on the LCD reads inconsistently, the target probably is a trash item, or oxidized metal. (My test disk has been exposed to weather for 25 years, and has not been cleaned up.) *The greater the distance between the target and the coil, the less accurate the target identification. There is this encouraging note at the bottom of Page 14: "With practice, you will learn the difference between accurate readings, multiple targets, and highly erratic readings (which evidence trash or irregularly shaped objects)." So, we may not know for certain until we dig and recover the #@^* railroad spike! One thing I discovered very quickly is that when powered on, the unit is in its most sensitive position. Immediately lower the sensitivity, using the minus key on the left side. The readings become much more consistent. Plus, you will avoid damage to the unit from nearby electric fields, such as overhead power lines. (I got the impression from the instruction book that this unit should never be turned on inside a house, for that reason.) After I play with it a bit more, I'll send you and our other known user an E-mail outlining my results. That way, we won't annoy Forum readers with limited-interest information. But, before we take this private, I want to make the standard "Guy" disclosure that, although I obviously have been consulting the instruction book, I did so ONLY AFTER INSERTING THE BATTERIES AND MAKING SOME PRACTICE SWEEPS. I would not want to ruin our gender's reputation about not stopping to ask directions, reading instruction manuals, etc. -Paul- CONFIDENTIAL TO GARMIN INTERNATIONAL. Your units would be more interesting if, after the fourth directive to "make a U-Turn" is ignored, the woman-in-the-box was programmed to say (in a sarcastic voice), "If you're a male who won't take navigation advice, why did you purchase a GPS receiver?" CLUB 33 I like it Well on a sad note I did read the directions first, BUT and I really like this, ONLY after my NiMH Radio shack batteries needed to be charged as they were DEAD on arrival. This took about 18 hours so left me PLENTY of time to read the puny little manual. On A positive note my Accupower charger also conditions batteries and I suspect this is what was going on.
  8. I'm with you on this Sandy Anyway I went to an ADJUSTED mark today conditions were overcast/stormy just really unsettled. There have been some real boomers coming through my neck of the woods as of late. The area was a clear view to all horizons, the mark I went to was RZ1552. This is an official mark that sets the border between the states of WA and ID. My 76CSX took me RIGHT to the mark. After making my documenting photos and putting an updated condition into my pda I took a precise reading, at least as precise as any GPSr can. The results were that my GPSr showed the unit WITHIN 2.5 FEET of the official coordinates, along with that the elevation of the unit showed to be just 23.075 FEET off of the official elevation. I do NOT have WAAS enabled and never have, additionally my barometer was not calibrated. Yes I do know how to just have not done so after my last battery change. Is this just luck or a fluke? No it is not, I am continually within a couple of meters/Yards of ADJUSTED marks that I look for. BTW I also have an E-trex summit that was made before their was WAAS and it too has been put up against an ADJUSTED benchmark and was within 6 FEET of the mark. For the record I am accomplished with a map and compass due to extensive military training, and having been a licensed guide. As a matter of just plain common sense I would never trust my life in a wilderness area etc to just my GPSr. I look at this piece of equipment just as a way to make things a bit easier but not to replace the knowledge you should have before venturing out. For those of you that micro manage your GPSr you will never be happy with any unit you get. This is not a precise scientific piece of equipment and should not be used or even remotely considered as such. These units are consumer grade and are actually inexpensive compared to scientific GPS equipment. as for the other sensors in these units they of course would not be considered scientific equipment. as far as I am concerned they are there to give me TRENDS in conditions and to let me have an APPROXIMATE elevation, besides being precise is just not possible in something you do not constantly calibrate, move from location to location without constant calibration or just throw on your belt or in your pack and bang around. For crying out loud get real with what you have and how you are using it.
  9. well my 3300 has claimed 2 finds this weekend for the contest and used it on three others that just turned up not being there it is going to take a little practice to get used to the unit as i did dig up several cans and one hubcap in a ditch. one thing I have noticed is the tones and screen readings are all over the place when I sweep across an actual benchmark set in a concrete monument. has anyone else had time to try this out yet? the sales guys told me I had the only 3300 that was in this area also.
  10. To bad we cant buy these by the sheet. They just want way too much for a small piece of plastic. A 12"sq sheet for $20 would be perfect. For what that "small piece of plastic" does it is a bargain. I would have absolutely ruined my GPSMAP 76CS but that little piece of plastic saved it. Go to their website and view their demos to see how it is different from the cheapo protectors sold for pda use. Wow, does this ever bring back a bad, recent event to memory. I scratched my 60cx on my first outing. I used toothpaste, Plastix, some sort of scratch remover, and every curse word I knew and still couldn't get the scratches out. I finally said "the heck with it" and bought the above product from shieldzone thinking that I would make the best of a bad situation, but prevent further damage. BUT WOW! After putting on the InvisiShield, the scratches are not visible at all! I love it again. Just an opinion, but you may want to give the InvisiShield a try before you put too much work into trying to remove the scratches. Good Luck, Frankendoodle another very nice thing about invisishield is the lifetime replacement. I had to send my 60cx in, and the new screen protector is on its way. I forgot to add shipping/handling (which isn't listed on the FAQ, but still much cheaper than buying a new chunk of plastic) so they called today. Yep another happy camper here with Invisishield I also have one for my PDA ect. but for you still not jumping in, put large scratch or several in screen makes it hard to read and everything else that goes with it like replacement cost of around $175 for map60, 76. Or get basically bomb proof protector with LIFETIME replacement warranty for $10 bucks Hmmmmm what to do, what to do
  11. Turns out Radio Shack had 3 models on closeout I ended up with the model 3300 for $111 dollars not bad for a $300 dollar unit now maybe a couple of elusive disk will be claimed finally for the contest
  12. when you checked your GPSr did you do it with an ADJUSTED bench mark or a SCALED mark?? there is a MAJOR difference in the two. Some marks are using NAD83 for the scaled coordinates and with the same mark are using NAVD88 for the Adjusted coordinates IF they have Adjusted coordinates. Make SURE what the control is on your mark and ONLY use coordinates from an ADJUSTED mark for your accuracy test. the elevation change could be due to an unseen weather change. Just like a plane the barometer in a GPSr ideally needs to be calibrated hourly to be accurate. Thanks - it was a scaled GPS benchmark, and I had it correctly set to NAD83. My GPS elevation also fluctuated a large bit. I calibrated my altimer to a value shortly beforehand that should have been pretty close. Thanks for the advice. Will try it out on another benchmark. Glad I could help a bit. I did not mention before A SCALED mark is one that has been given a best GUESS location by someone in an office in D.C., they look at a TOPO map of the area and give a guess of where they THINK the mark should be by the official description given when the mark was placed. this leads to some HUGE differences as I think you have found out. I currently have a mark that is off the scaled coordinates by over 350 feet. I have to go back to it with a metal detector as it is buried somewhat but the official description has me quite close at this point. It makes hunting for Benchmarks quite interesting to say the least

  14. For what it's worth, GPSCity.com now gives the "product availability" date as June 12 (they originally claimed May 31). --Larry Yep I just called GPScity after checking on the status of my order apparently Garmin has delayed the release until the 12th. so here i am still on the pre order list.
  15. My reason for asking that question is this: if you are zoomed in to the point where the little "overzoom" message pops up, then the map is no longer accurate because you are viewing it at a magnification greater than its degree of error can cover. So my point was a bit different than yours but I think we're both getting at the same thing: beyond a certain amount of zoom, you can no longer rely on the map to be accurate at that scale. GeoBC HMMM I have not noticed the over-zoom message THAT much but it does have good logic. The scale i was using along the river was either .2 or .3 tenths of a mile (I was changing the zoom here and there) when I was making my observations.
  16. As already mentioned, if you're truly concerned about your unit's accuracy, compare it against a benchmark. Comparing against the Mapsource or built-in base map isn't a reliable test because the map data itself could be faulty. BTW, what zoom level are you using when you see your position off the road? GeoBC Thanks for stating that Geo this is exactly what I have noticed and what I was going to strongly suggest to others. using my 76CSX and Topo w/basemap. I have seen where the road on the map is absolutely not correct. for those of you in doubt go to your map page and zoom in on a major road, if you have a unit with a proximity circle you will notice that it is getting significately larger on the screen. Now look at the road you are zooming in on it is not changing in proportion, in other words the proportion of the road is not changing as you zoom in the screen to match your scale on the screen or the proximity circle. If the road would change as it should your circle would be nothing but road with estimated GPSr accuracy of 10 to 30 feet and with the unit zoomed in to 20 feet. What it is showing is you off the "road" most of the time, remember a major road is around 40+ feet wide with shoulders. what I have seen is my unit to be extremely accurate to the point of showing me right on the edge of a river as I am driving and the road quite a ways off, the fact is the river I drive along and the road are that close in quite a few places, my GPSr shows me where I should be however the map does not show the road there. Frankly trust your unit over the maps, don't expect miracles, the whining about perceived accuracy is getting outrageous, and lastly as stated MANY times before if this is so important or you are just curious find an ADJUSTED benchmark and test the accuracy of your unit against it. If you are within the estimated accuracy of the unit at the time you do the test you have a winner!!
  17. Thanks Paul!!! Just called radio shack it is a national clearance sale according to the sales guy, my local store is holding my detector for me until tomorrow, it is the last one of this model this store has boy am I glad I called i went for the $200 toy it is on clearance for $76 and change.
  18. Once again Miragee has beat me to the punch and I am stuck with sitting back and agreeing completely with this post. you can pick up a Palm 500,505 or as i have, a 515 for around 10 to 50 bucks on E-bay just look around and make sure to check the sellers feedback before you buy.
  19. I'm really not trying to be difficult here but what I'd like to do is AVOID using a PDA and just have supplemental data on the GPS. I see by some other threads regarding the 60C(S)x there's a free-form text field for adding clues etc. How much data do you need regarding a single cache? The problem I have with gsak is it does not work with the 60csx due to usb driver incompatability. Does anyone know if this has been corrected or when it will? I'm stuck using easygps until then. I think the new version of GSAK does work with the 'x' versions. But, you can still use GSAK. All you do is, after you have filtered the caches to your heart's content, you Export them to Mapsource and then Send the caches to your GPSr from Mapsource. Takes less than one extra minute to do that. You don't even need the extra minute anymore, I have been downloading directly from GSAK into my 76CSX with the newest version 6.6.1 B30 this version became available on May 23rd
  20. If they would put a "1" in front of The 250 and it were inforced to at least some degree maybe we would have a few less farmers and people wearing tinfoil hats doing less of THIS, its just a shame people do not take pride in a historical sense of what some had to do to put in markers like these.
  21. Here are our finds for sat the 27th RZ0238/1933/ N/N RZ0244/1933/N/N This may not qualify but I am submitting for the judges to decide RZ0248/1933N/N RZ0249/1933/N/N RZ0251/1933/N/N RZ0253/1933/N/N RZ0245/1933/N/N RZ0247/1933/N/N
  22. I currently have City Navigator V8 on pre-order at THIS site price is $119.95
  23. The only thing that is not covered by your criteria with the 60CSX,CX or the 76 CSX,CX are voice commands. I just received my 76CSX and am quite impressed by it so far, the first thing i did was update ALL of the software and firmware to the latest versions. As for programs to manage way points etc I love GSAK along with a premium membership to this site to download pocket queries. I also use cache mate with my palm515 for paperless caching. In all it is quite streamlined and easy to get around and use IMHO. hope this helps
  24. The newest version of GSAK does work just fine. here are the newest Garmin versions I am also using. One other question in menu's then setup, Interface what are your settings? Also on the send waypoints to GPSr screen you will see a button marked GPSr setup in this new screen what are your settings? they should be "GPS BRAND" Garmin the next important box is "GPSr is USB" make sure you have this checked if using a USB cable EDIT to add screen shot
