  1. I was in the sports secton at Target and saw some of the decoy ducks. I thought that would be interesting to use....the ones I saw were hollow. Chip
  2. I don't mind the virutals. My wife and I have recently visited Texas from Iowa while seeing Family. On our way back to Iowa on interstate 35 we visited the "And Jesus Wept" cache in Oklahoma city (GC7051). The cache is a virtual at the memorial of the federal building that was blown up. We wouldn't have visited there otherwise. On the same block there is another virtual cache "American Eagle" (GC4772). Anyway, the caches are visible from each other. Both were interesting in their own respects......I don't see a problem. Chip

  4. Check e-bay for a cable. You can pick one up for about 10 bucks. Not bad when compaired to 35 dollars or so wanted by Garmin. Chip
  5. http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=6770936793&m=3010998115 I clicked on 'search' and typed 'ownership'. There were several hits. Chip

  7. I had the strangest dream last night. I dreamed that the FBI posted a locationless cache for the "top 10 most wanted". To log the cache your information (pictures, cooridinates, whatever) had to lead to the arrest of one of the ten most wanted. I think it may be time to put the GPS away for a bit.... Chip

  9. As far as I'm concerned 'big brother' is already dipping too far into my business. Next thing you know it will be mandatory to get a GPS transmitter implanted...along with a DNA sample. ...it starts with pets getting a 'chip' implanted under the skin so they are identifiable when they are found after running away, people see what a good it is then there is a 'chip' under the kids skin....and so it begins. conspiracy theory or inevitability.... Chip
  10. I didn't have any problems updating to 2.14. I know these are dumb questions, but you're sure the cables are plugged in good? Clicking the right file? Etrex is powered on and is set to 'garmin' in the interface setup? Are you connecting to the correct com port? Chip
  11. quote:Originally posted by hellmaster:Are you draining the static electricity from yourself before hot unplugging from the port? maybe thats the cause, touch the case for a few seconds before unplugging anything that is hot. or youcan get one of those things that attaches to your wrist and clips onto the frame of the case. Static can damage computer wether they're powered on or off. Discharging static electircity is always good but I wouldn't recommend wearing the strap on a powered on system...in the event of an actualy shock from live components you are giving the electircity a perfect path to ground. Personally I've never heard of plugging in a serial port in hot burning it out but that doesn't mean it cant happen. I'll take a look at some of my books and see if I can find another probable cause. 12. I use MS Streets and Trips 2002. It works great so far. IT is VERY similar to the internet sites maps. You can input the cost of gas/car milage and size of your tank and it will cost the trip for you. You can add stops in your route 'on the fly' and it will reroute immediately. You can hook your GPS up to a laptop and track you position in real time on the map (the software has a 15 second delay in tracking...there is a patch available on the internet that will change it to two seconds). Overall I like it and it's not bad at $40. If you have any questions about it feel free to email me. My address is in my profile. Chip
  13. Check out the 'garage sale' forum. Chip
  14. I use the basic etrex with a laptop using Microsoft Streets and trips. The yellow etrex does output to the laptop for real time tracking on the map. It works great, but if you get the MS Streets and Trips be sure to use the 'patch' available on the internet that changes the 15 second location update to 2 seconds. I use it and it works like a charm. NMEA is just an output protocol for the GPS. Chip
  15. I'm writing to advocate not crossposting!
  16. Thanks to all who replied! Lapaglia, that's what I was looking for. 5-oh, thanks for the offer, but I found one perfectly suited for what I needed. Chip
  17. Has anyone made an excel spreadsheet that is quick to use to convert the 'minutes.seconds' style of coordinates to decimal? Chip
  18. Thanks for the link Gimpy!! OK, now any idea if this works with 2.14 of the Garmin Basic eTrex software? I tried it and when I click 'search' with default 'WARNING' in the text box it says it can't find it.... Chip
  19. Where might one find more info on MeMap? Chip

  21. Thanks for the reply! I found where to do it shortly after posting.....I looked at the menu's too fast and overlooked the 'more options' selections. So far I LOVE this software, there are tons of features. I've yet to do any real time tracking with the GPS hooked up to the laptop, but I'll play with that after I figure out the basics of it. I downloaded and installed the 2-second update patch also. Chip
  22. I just got this software in preparation for a road trip. My wife and I will take turns driving so we won't require stopping. The directions in streets and tirps shows a stop time of 5pm and it splits the trip into two days....it's a 12 hour straight drive and I'd prefer the software show it like that. Is there any way to lose the 'end of day' line in the point to point directions?? Chip
