  1. When the program is opened click on file>Preferences, then check the box next to "create waypoint ID from waypoint name". If it's unchecked it uses the GCXXXX name, if it is checked it uses the actual cache name. I just like the GCXXXX name because that's what fits into the GPSr. I print out the discription sheets and take them along with me on the hunts so when I'm starting a new hunt I crossreference the cache I want to look for with the GCXXXX name on the GPSr. It's also convienent when scrolling through the list of stored waypoints to just go to the G section and there they all are in order. I agree to each their own....that's what makes this "RASH" so great. 2. Do a search on the board using keywords: pack, gear, backpack, or something along those lines. There are several threads that cover this in much depth. Chip
  3. I recently downloaded Geobuddy version 1. After doing some 'playing' by downloading a few .loc files from www.geocaching.com I found that the name of the cache is the first few letters of the actual name of the cache, not the GCXXXX name. Is there any way to change the name of the cache to the GCXXXX name instead of the first few letters of the actualy name into Geobuddy? The screenshots of v.2 shows the name in the GCXXXX format. 5. quote:Originally posted by ifranz:you might also want to look at Microsoft streets and trips 2002. I got if for 25 bucks on ebay and it allows you to attach a GPS to a laptop and track real time, you can also plot points (i've only done this w/ manual entry, so if you have 100's it might be a problem) But for the money its great. -ifranz Does the MS Streets and Trips support any GPS. I current use the yellow etrex and would love the real time tracking feature. I did hear, however, that the update time for the real time tracking it 15 seconds, is this true? I'd like a little quicker update. Chip [This message was edited by Seay me on July 27, 2002 at 12:06 PM.]

Geocaching is very high on my discovering list. I have seen many a things I would have never known existed in my own State of Ohio, and I contribute that to the many, and I mean many Geocachers out there!! Heres too Us!!! "Seay" is my last name. Seay me is sort of a play on words (see me). Chip
  7. quote:Originally posted by thrillseeker69:We used to play a game called CB tag. (Basically hide and seek). One person (usually in a vehicle) would hide within pre-determined boundaries, and others would try to track them down, using clues the "hider" provided, and signal strength obtained on the radios' signal meter. Once the hider was found, the finder got to go hide. Its a blast! And in many ways, geacaching is a lot like it, which is why I immediatly enjoyed it. Anyone ever tried it or heard of it? Anyone out there? Where exactly are you from? We did that very thing, to the letter, in Florida. Chip

  10. quote:Originally posted by DisQuoi: However, one drawback I've noticed is that to calibrate a map image, you have to know the top left corner and bottom right corner coordinate. In GPS Utility, you can use any two points and it will even rotate the grid if necessary. Where would one fine the coordinates of a two points on a map. Is there a realitively easy way to do it? Chip
  11. quote:Check it out at http://www.gpstm.com I think you'll find it does what you are looking for and more. (Like Insert your own maps!) Krs, Kar & Na I downloaded the software from the gpstm website and it looks great, but how do I know how big to make the maps I put into the software so that the lat/long is correct? Chip

  19. I say log it as a fine. You found it, you have a picture to prove you found it. Personally I'd have went ahead and signed the book and made a trade if there was something I wanted to trade for. If the guys wanted to know what I was doing I'd tell them. I'm sure when they knew that all there was in the cache was mcdonald toys, pencils and other misc. stuff they wouldn't have botehred it. I've only logged 8 finds, but still don't understand completely the 'secret squirrle' aspect of the geocaching. Why be ashamed. Chip
  20. Don't know if this website has been discussed here, but it's got tons of GPS/Constellation information. http://www.edu-observatory.org/gps/status.html Here's a link that lists GPS interruptions/outtages. http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/gpsnotices/default.htm Chip
  21. I'd be willing to work on a template and forward it along.....Need to find a good quality logo though. send one to me if you locate one. junyr@mchsi.com Chip

I would love to see a thread or a link with some other hints and tricks for the various GPS units out there. Not sure if you got your GPSr new or used, but my eTrex noted both methods of entering coordinates in the manual. The "GPS units and Software" message board is a good place to check out also. Chip

  24. The data cable is a good idea, but keep it in mind that the only thing you can use the data cable for is upgrading the software for the unit itself and for something like EasyGPS.....there is no mapping capability in this unit at all. I use EasyGPS with my yellow eTrex, it's much easier to download the cache info from the website than to manually enter the coordinates. Chip
