  1. I really liked my Vista Cx until I tried to install update 2.4. the download failed at 98 % . The unit shut off and wouldn't turn back on. I had to send my Vista back to Garmin. I hope it comes back this week.
  2. Since Vista Cx is in the topic title I would guess that is the unit you are using. Therefore I cant imagine why your USB GPSr can't connect to your computer. Your Vista Cx came with a cable that has a normal USB connector on one end and a smaller mini-usb connector on the other end. Since you dont know much about computers Let me suggest that you look for the USB connection on the back of your computer. Even older computers will have USB ports. If you are currently using all of the USB connections available you can purchase a USB hub that gives you additional ports. I own a Vista Cx and nowI use GSAK to manage my Pocket Queries and Cachemate to send the Cache information to my used PDA. When I first got started caching I followed the instructions as stated in reply above I downloaded the list of nearest caches to my zipcode and used EASYGPS to send them to my Vista Cx. I also opened the individual cache information sheets and printed them along with the Mapquest map for driving instructions. It was a really easy process. I was just beginning to get comfortable with paperless caching when I had to send my Vista Cx back to Garmin for repair. but thats another story. best of luck keep trying. timk54
  3. The following is the response I got from my email to Garmin Support. It came a couple days after I sent the unit back to them for repair. The tech suggests avoiding the use of Web updater which i thought was interesting. Regardless the system seems to be working and Garmin should have my GPSr back in my hands sometime next week. Thank you for contacting Garmin, I am happy to help you with this. When you download new software the first thing that happens is the old software is erased. If the download is interrupted the unit will show nothing on the screen even though it is powered on. You should be able to still download the software to the unit but I recommend avoiding the web updater. You can work around this by clicking on Update and Downloads/Additional Software and then choose your unit in the list. I would also erase the file you currently have on the computer so there is no confusion with the new download. If this does not resolve the issue please give customer service a call at the number below, any rep can trouble shoot this with you. 4. I understand your pain. I had trouble getting used to my Vista Cx when I first bought it. I will help with my limited knowledge of the unit if I can. Either ask here or email me. timk54
  5. When caching I always carry a good leatherman and a hefty pocket folding knife. Wife carries two or three Pocket folding knifes at any one time. We each carry a good Leki hiking pole to deal with snakes. I have grown to enjoy using the pole to assist in assending steep grades and steading myself crossing rocky areas.. Guns, who needs them. I think only us good guys should have them. Glock .45, Glock 9mm, S&W .38 Chief. When camping in the mountains and the desert I keep the Winchester Mod. 94 30-30 handy. The 12 ga. shotgun with the pistol grip is for show if an unwanted two legged visitor approaches. Love to shoot, Practice often. timk54
  6. Another reason to stop the use of Tupperware and Folgers coffee cans for caching.
  7. This one has to be a "1" It's the oly cache that I have seen that rattles to let you know where it is.
  8. I bought my Vista Cx two months ago. The first firmware update was 2.3. It worked just fine. When I saw the new listing for update 2.4 I downloaded the Web Updater progam from the Garmin website and ran it. as ir began downloading the update. I noticed that it said I was downloading 2.3 which I already had. but bu then it was to late to stop the process. When the install screen said 98 % the unit beeped and shut down the install froze and the unit would not respond even to the hard reset that the tech support person had me try. I got my RMA number and sent it back for replacement. The frustrating thing was that I finally have figured out how to use GSAK and cachemate and my PDA. By the time I get my GPSr back I'll have to relearn it all. timk54
  9. I hope the replacemant unit that they send back doesn't have the same problem. I miss my GPSr so much I surfed the web last night and almost bought another one. Not a good time to do that right now. 9 more days to go. timk54
  10. OOOOoooops... you're quick! I had to be quick I hate being without my GPSr. This is exactly the reason I need to buy a backup unit. I wish I had some money laying around. Timk54
  11. Many years ago I was a navy fighter plane structure mechanic. I spent hours sitting in the nose of an F-4 with a can of plastic polish removing fine scratches that were in the pilots vision. Recently my Motorola I730 s screen got scratched up by the protective cover I bought to prevent that. I used the same technique on that plastic screen to remove the scratches that I used on the jets wind screens. Another poster mentioned the Novus product and that should work well. Unless the scratch is really deep it will polish out. The best advise after that is get a screen protector. timk54
  12. Yes the first thing the customer support person asked me to do was try the hard reset. Nothing. He gave me the address and an RMA # and I mailed it to Garmin an hour ago.
  13. Talked with Customer Support -Garmin. I'm sending the GPSR to them for repair. Should have it back in 10 days. Am I the only one who has these unsual problems? timk54
  14. Thanks for the tips but the Vista Cx is still is dead. I'm on hold waiting for Garmin support as I type. My wife wanted to go geocaching on Mother's day .Guess thats out now. Timk54
  15. I'm not familiar with a hard reset, How do I do that? thanks timk54
  16. The unit was connected to the PC when the update was being installed. I have checked the batteries and they are fresh. The unit won't power on. How bad is this? timk54
  17. Ok now I've done it. I downloaded the Garmin Webupdater and ran the program. All looked fine until the install of the new software was 98 % done. I heard a beep the unit shut off and the webupdater froze. Now I can't turnon the GPSr. Now what should I do? timk54
  18. The Etrex Legend is a good bet. The Etrex Venture is similar but only has one megabite of memory. The Legend has 8 MB of memory which will allow for more mapping information to be downloaded. The Summit has an electronic compass and altimeter but I'm not sure about the ability to connect to a computer and download maps. Remember that you can only use Garmin software(maps) on Garmin GPSrs. The Magellan Explorer 210 seems to be a good unit but If you look at posts on this site you will see that Garmin is heads above Magellan in product support and warranty. By the way Garmin packages the conector cable with the Legend. I own the Garmin Etrex Vista Cx. It comes with 24 MB memory and has an expandable removable memory chip the stock one that came with mine is 32 MB. the color screen is beautiful and I have grown to love the one handed controls. I'm not as smart as some of the others on this forum so my learning curve was rather long to get comfortable with the features. It now seems easy to operate. An example: my son haD a magellan 200 and an etrex legend for sale a while ago. the etrex sold on the first day posted. He still has the Magellan.
  19. Excellent Idea Lets get rid of all broken plastic containers and replace them withing that will last forever.
  20. You didn't say what version your running now. Anyway here's a link to the Version History Release - CMConvert 1.9.4 (May 6, 2006) 0 comments This release improves support for HTML entities in cache descriptions. It also improves support for zipped GPX files... now, all GPX files in a ZIP file are processed, instead of only the first. I guess this is th3 notice I am refering to .
  21. If my Vista Cx is working fine is there any risk associated with downloading the new update? Is it better to wait awhile to see if there any bugs? timk54
  22. I'm not much of a tech type but did I read correctly that Cachemate has a new version? If thats correct what can it do now that it couldn't do before? I use it to load cache info to my Palm Zire 21. Just wanted to make sure before I downloaded something that would mess up what I have now. thanks timk54
  23. using the help from this community I have been sucessful in downloading PQs to both my palm and GPSr Thanks everyone timk54
  24. Well, if your real flush, you might try this one. http://www.trimble.com/geoxh.shtml Just curious, how much does the Trimble cost? Does anyone use one for caching?
