  1. Yeah but new toys!

Granted PocketQueries through Plucker are wonderful and I use them all the time. But like Bull Moose said, there are times that I find myself with an out of date query or in a location I did not download points for.

Lone Duck, are you a developer? Perhaps we simply need to appeal to the right person to give this a shot.

    Thanks for the replies.

  2. I just got a new Verizon cell phone and have been very impressed with it's additional features and capabilities.

One feature is called "Get It Now" (this may be available on other carriers, I am not sure) where you can access a variety of mini applications with a variety of services like local movie times, city guides and directories, games etc.

How wonderful would it be to have Geocaching.com as an available service here? Put in your zip code and it loads the closes 20 caches and descriptions! This could be another bonus added to Premium mebership. Just dreaming, but what to you say Jeremy?

  3. I have used my Legend to track speed in various situations and am wondering about what issues affect accuracy of the reading you get.

In the car is seems to be dead on with my speedometer. Walking in the trail is seems very consistent.

I took it up to Bogus last Friday for a fun day of snowboarding and used it to map out the runs and to keep track of Max. Speed. I was shocked to see it reading 57.6MPH after a pretty fast run icon_eek.gif. I reset it after each run an found it giving very consistent numbers. There were areas though that I knew I was going faster than the part of the trail that gave the 57 reading, but it was in areas with very steep vertical drops. In these it was averaging around 35MPH.

My question. Does anyone know if the unit only tracks horizontal forward motion or does it track point A to point B motion? i.e. What would it read for a skydiver, 0MPH or 512MPH? icon_redface.gif

    Signatures are dumb.

But the most useful information for me on the hunt that I take printed off are the maps - satellite and topo from lostoutdoors.com. Each one of these maps could be roughly 300K if saved as a jpg.

I would think that this would cause a problem of memory limitation. Also - how visible would these image files be on a Palm?

There are tons of free image viewing applications available for Palm and PocketPC. The images you mentioned from "lostoutdoors" could be saved a gifs or jpegs at around 25k and still be perfectly readable. Granted this takes a little bit of savy and effort to download the image and manipulate.

Here is a list from searching PalmGear for "jpeg".

I have also used AvantGo to view pages with images and it does a great job as well.

  5. I use my PalmVx with Pocket Queries for displaying caches and GeoCaching DB for logging notes, took & left, etc.

My big advice would be to get a good case! The Vx is pretty small and I have a slim line metal case which allows it to ride in my pocket, even with jeans. I am sure it would have been busted months ago.

  6. I have had the same trouble and there is a way to fix it although a little bit of a pain. You can retake possesion of your bug and log your drop on the appropriate date which should fix the miles. Then to put the bug back in the right cache or in the hands of the right owner, you need to have them pick it up or edit their log and redrop the bug.

It's a pain but it corrected my bug from 28 miles to 722 miles.

  7. Seth.

Thanks for your work on this! What a cool utility. I have made sheets for my bugs (some of which are lonely in hard to reach caches that no one has visited to months). Perhaps some day I can attach them. My new bugs will definately get one!

Perhaps this can become a feature Jeremy would like to develop on the GC main site. I know there are tons of cachers not following the forums. I guess this should go in the "features request" forum.

  9. This thread is dedicated to horror stories of trying to hit an "easy, quick" cache on your lunch break.

I was headed to a local cache that was posted a few days ago very near my house and work. There were about 6 logs of guys saying stuff like, "No Problem" and "Found this in under 6 minutes." So I think this sounds like a fun lunch break with my wife and son.

We are getting ready to head out and I start changing my shoes. My wife says, "Come on. This one will be easy. You don't have time." Against my better judgement I listened. We get to the spot and my heart sinks as it is one of those hellish spots will no less than 24 perfect hiding spots. Plus this is an area where there are lots of 6 foot tall reeds and where they are laying down it creates even more hide spots. Well needless to say I thrashed around for about an hour, slipped down the creek bank in the mud, fell in the creek (in the work shoes I did not change), stabbed my arms and head a dozen time on a freaking thorn tree, and still did not find the cache!!!

I know there are hundreds of stories just like this. Let's hear yours.

  10. This is on topic with my issue so I will add to it rather than starting a new post.

I was having trouble with corrupted prc files as well. I noticed the zip feature and activated that. The only two zip files I have received have be corrupted themselves and unzipable by both WinZip and Stuffit Expander.

Any ideas? Also how can you get the pocket queries to regenerate a second, third, or x time in a given day? Do i really have to wait till tomorrow to try again?

  11. I do a lot of these things mentioned. One thing I do not have are any MapSource CD's. I really get into research and planning (that is part of the fun of caching for me) so I guess I need to invest.

MetroGuide vs. Topo? I would have the secondary use of MetroGuide US maps while traveling. Does it include all country roads that would help for zeroing in on caches where you do not know the local area? Does Topo include any streets or is it strictly topo information?

  12. This might go in the newbie board, but as I have been doing this since July I would like to give myself the benefit of the doubt.

The question is simple. What do you do when planning to hit multiple caches in one outing? I guess I realize the obvious such as checking the GPS for "nearest cache" and just going from point to point, but I wanted to find out what other type of planning you guys might do to be prepared for whatever the GPS spits out as the nearest cache.

I am headed to McCall this weekend and am hoping to hit a long sting of caches all the way up and while there.

    Looking forward to the feedback!

    Cheers

  13. The Book Worm is back on track. A friend of the cache owner went and checked on him. Apparently the cache he was in was in an area that was on again, off again due to fire danger. They moved him 30 miles down the road and sent him on his way again. Let's hope he picks up from here.

  14. My wife an I lovingly bought and created our first Travel Bug a while back. We are from Idaho and wanted to give the bug a good start so on a trip to Utah we dropped him off. None of these miles are tracked though as he never made it into a cache here in Idaho. Is there a way to specify a bug's origin that I am missing? I would like this little guy to have those miles tacked.

    Thanks

  15. I placed an order on Sunday and have already received two emails. One receipt and one with shipping confirmation and FedEx tracking numbers. So far so good. I will let you know if any trouble arises before the unit gets here, or if it delayed for any reason.

BTW. GPS Discount's price is about $20 less than the same item on FreshTrackMAps.
