  1. Okay, I have the M5 as I have said earlier. I have used all the newer players and here is what I have come up with. 1) After removing all the software and then reloading the cab, I can get the player to work... 1 time. I found a way around that by unselecting the "auto detect" to "com 4 9600" and it works fine. Even after playing new cartridge or stopping the player and even after a soft reset. 2) But with all the players I have used, I still have one issue. When there are pictures on something and when I have to scroll down, it locks up and I have to do a soft reset. I think an earlier poster described the same problem with the tutorial which was a problem for me too. But I think to define more of what the issue is, is that when there is a picture and the screen needs to be scrolled down. Is there anyone having this issue with other PDA/GPSr? I am short of doing a hard reset and installing everything again from scratch.
  2. Thank you for the replies. I did leave it unactive but see that is has still been downloaded twice. Non of which was me though. I thought there was a way to archive it because on the site is says "in bold is active" and with the line crossed through is "archived" but I take it that as of now, there is no way to archive it. That makes since! I noticed that with the text of the lau when I open it with "word" that is shows something about ID so I wonder if I can edit that out by the info in the gwc file from downloading it from the cartridge page. I will check that out. Thanks agian.
  3. I recently tried updating one of my cartridges. But Instead of using the original lau file i made it with, I just started over from fresh with a new cartridge. It had a different name than the original and when I went to upload it to the Wherigo stire, it becamse a new cartridge. I do not want that one and I can't firgure out how to archive it or delete it. Also from the same thing, I must have delete the original lau file and even after renaming the file after the cartridge I want it to be, it will not let me upload it to the site. I keep getting an error. I'm assuming that when you make the cartridge, it is given a unique id and that is why it will not let me upload. What do I do? The gist of the reason I want to get things right is because I remade how the cartridge would play. And I don't want to have to redo all the info on the cache page. Plus one person made a log on the Wherigo cartridge site. If I have to, I will just redo all the cache page info but I am trying to prevent that if possible. Which still leads me back to getting rid of the cartridge on the Wherigo site that I do not want there. Thanks
  4. I use the Garmin IQue M5 and things work fine for me. I made a Wherigo cache and let a couple of people check it out by using my unit. I made the update to the most recent player update but now when I load the cartridge, it will only show "task" but nothing else. No location, inventory, nothing else. I received the prior version from a friendly moderator and another gracious cacher. I went back to using it and every thing is fine again. Has any other M5 user have the same problem? I apologize for double posting as I pointed out a problem and I was asking for the older version (that someone did send me) in that thread but maybe here I can get some feed back.
  5. I know you can change the time on a PDA but what about a way that it accessed the time via the GPS sats. If you could have it check the time that way, would that be hackable?
  6. I am pretty green in the aspect of building a cartridge. I am happy to say that I did make Arizona's first Wherigo cache but it is pretty raw for now. I looked through the buidler and searched the forums but if there was a search keyword to find this out, I couldn't come up with it. I was wondering if there is or will be a way to set time restictions so that the cartridge con only play during the night. For those who didn't want to do it at night, I would asume if it is or is possible that there would be a way to change the time so that you could trick the player to believe in the time you want it to be.
  7. Anyone can send me the player cab for the PPC version 2.0.4907.4007 dated 3-7-08. I can not find it anywhere and when I downloaded the new version, I accidently replaced the older version. Can anyone email at jdubpooch@yahoo.com thank you
  8. Okay, I had everything fine but since the new player update last night, now it shows the task but it does not show the locations any more. I am using the Garmin Ique M5. I tried reinstalling everything but it will not work. It did work before the most recent update of the player. And now I can not find the older version to go back to. Any help?? I guess I should add that I also DL the newest builder too but that doesn't seem to be a factor in the problem as other cartridges don't work now either, not just the ones I built myself. And also it works in the emulator.
  9. I too was having trouble with my garmin ique m5. Here's what it was. The first time I installed everything in order as per recommended. When I loaded it up to use I had no troubel. The problem I encountered was when I loaded the tutaorial cartridge. When I would scroll to read the words is when it would lock up. Then after that I did a soft reset and it got locked up at searching for gps like others have. I did a restore to a previous restore point and then reinstalled everything again and back to the same loop. So I decided to delete the toturial from the unit and install a different cartridge (easter egg hunt) and I have had no problems since then. I created a cartridge for my home including my mailbox, trampoline and shed as the zones and I am happy to say that it was a success! So I am working on making a Wherigo cache for my area. As of this moment there are NO Wherigo caches in Arizona and I hope to be the first to place one. It will be a basic set up for now but I hope to make some of the really cool ones I have seen others make. Welcome to the new age of geocaching where we are not just the search engine but now we can live out a fantasy game, in real life. Zelda has nothing on Wherigo.
  10. How did you get it to work with the M5? I can't get it to go beyond the screen GPS device detection in progress screen. I tried uninstalling Wherigo and reinstalling it. that didn't help. Any ideas? Anyone? I too am having trouble with my Garmin Ique m5. I did everything in order as far as i know but I can get the tutorial started but if I scroll the screen down to see what they are saying, the whole thing freezes up and I have to do a soft reset. But once I do this, when I start Wherigo up, it never gets past the "detecting gps" screen. I have tried the test gps in the menu and it says the test was a success but yet still no love. To get it to work again I have to restore it to the way it was prior to doing any installs. So that I can start from the very begining but afterwards I get the same cycle over again. Please someone HELP. I was hoping to be the first person to have one of these set up in Arizona. THANKS in advance.
  11. I did a search and came up with this. http://72.14.253.104/search?q=cache:fMIk4R...;cd=3&gl=us
  12. I know of Highpointer and I went to a TB (prison) hotel that had the rules of "take 1 leave 1" and I did not want to make ripples with the cache owner so I simply "discovered" them all and made a note in my log that it was a shame that I had no TBs to trade and had to leave without being able to take one on my travels to Mexico. Highpointer went to the same cache after I did and took most if not all of the TBs that were there. The cache was placed in a good area and decently hidden. He then emailed me and told me I should have taken all that I wanted and pointed me to a link discussing the "TB (prison) hotel subject that Jeremy discussed that caches should never have restrictions placed on the taking of TBs. But I will say that he did quickly spread those TBs around to other caches. He appears to travel quit a bit and does move the TBs over quit a distance (that is what TBs are meant to do.) I may not agree with his comments on the cache page (yes I did read the cache page) but I will say this... If I ever had a travel bug stuck in a TB prison, I sure hope Highpointer is the one to rescue them!
  13. Have you tried a Google search with the key words "free point of interest?" I came up with some using the key words "free gpx" also. You can also try addig the name of the city or state to make the search results more direct to the area you are looking for.
  14. This is why when I log a FTF I phrase it "first2find" so it is not confused when I write something like tftf. I actually went back through all my previous logs of FTFs so they would show correctly.
  15. If there is an exception made to the guidelines, many reviewers will ask that it be mentioned on the cache page. I guess in the case of buried cache many don't because it would give away the hiding method. What about my question in that case? I think the owner can write something like "The reviewer granted an exception to the guidelines for this hide method upon receiving written permission from the landowner" without giving anything away. Hey, that sounds similar to what I wrote earlier in this post about questionable hides. It went like this. "This cache was setup with permission but should not be assumed permissible in another location. Please check with your local reviewer before attempting to copy this style of cache." This covers the fact that it has been given permission and does not give away how it is set up and the fact that just because I did it doesn't mean you can too, so check with your reviewer first.
  16. No flask, I had to read it all to know what to cut out... Please don't think I am trying to argue. I try to keep my post to being helpful and I do not like to argue with people. I believe the forums are for people to share info and help each by shareing their opinions. Some people it seems though only post on the forums because they like to argue with people.
  17. Really? And a kid mature enough to stay at home while the parents go on vacation is mature enough not the through the biggest (my parents are out of town for the week and I have the house all to myself) party of the year?
  18. In regards to lighters I believe the fact should be is that there are kids (under 18) that are into geocaching and would you leave alcohol in a cache? No, and why? Because you have to be at least 21 and over to buy it. In Arizona from what I understand is that anyone under the age of 18 is not allowed to buy a lighter. So if you leave a lighter in a cache and someone under the age of 18 takes it, then you are contributing to minors.
  19. Wow, I can't believe how this has turned into such a big discussion.
  20. Hmmm... something like this: "...First and foremost please be advised there is no precedent for placing caches. This means that the past listing of a similar cache in and of itself is not a valid justification for the listing of a new cache..." I'm going along the lines of if a cache that was placed in a pre-existing hole would allow other cachers and reviewers know that it was placed within the guidelines and not automatically archived because another cacher assumed it was improperly placed. That the note be placed into the description of the cache page listing.
  21. There are obvious reasons for the guidelines but can I make a suggestion? Instead of treating people as children and assuming because one cache is done in a manor that is questionable and thinking that maybe someone will do it else where, how about stating something in the cache description along the lines of… “This cache was setup with permission but should not be assumed permissible in another location. Please check with your local reviewer before attempting to copy this style of cache.” Then if a cache was done in questionable way, then it would dually be noted that it was done within the guidelines and should not be assumed to be applicable in another form. So a cache that was placed in a pre-existing hole would allow other cachers and reviewers know that it was placed within the guidelines and not automatically archived because another cacher assumed it was improperly placed. This would be the same that a pvc pipe that has dirt or mulch or rocks surrounding it to make it look a part with the surrounding but not placed in the ground, then another cacher wouldn’t assume that it was OK to place a cache within the ground.
  22. I'm not trying to choose sides on this topic. As stated there are obvious reasons for the guidelines but can I make a suggestion? Instead of treating people as children and assuming because one cache is done in a manor that is questionable and thinking that maybe someone will do it else where, how about stating something in the cache description along the lines of… "This cache was setup with permission but should not be assumed permissible in another location. Please check with your local reviewer before attempting to copy this style of cache." This leads me to also have to ask if I wanted to place on my property, would I still not be allowed to dig a hole to place it in? I will assume yes because once again, "someone may attempt to copy it on BLM property." But what if I had dug the hole for something else but then changed my mind. What if I place a cache on flat level ground and then surround the container with a ton of, I don’t know, dirt, mulch, tons of rocks, does that still qualify as being buried since there was actually no hole dug to place the cache in? The wording on that guideline is terrible and leaves it very open but I'm guessing that was done intentionally. It does seem to leave few options. LPC - which are usually on private properties without permission. Desert and forest caches – which are usually on trust lands and for the most part, are not allowed. Micros - which like LPC caches are mostly on private properties without permission. So when you do find places where caches can be placed they seemed to be spotted my muggles and a couple of things that could happen is the cache gets stolen or the bomb squad gets called in to blow them up. I just don't know. I really enjoy geocaching but these forums just show that caching seems to be more of a problem then a fun sport. I really don't know where I'm going with this so I will end this for now. I do have to ask though to those who find caches improperly placed, do you still log a smiley to the cache page???
  23. In my interpretation If there is any question on whether or not the cache owner is responsible for their placement and what happens to the area it is placed in at near or around, the guidelines clearly states "As the cache owner, you are responsible for the placement and care of your cache." So when I place a cache I take into consideration what bad things may happen around the cache. I would never place it somewhere I think it would destroy or else mess with it's surrounding area. If I found out it was a problem I would most certainly archive the cache or disable it until I can figure out a better way for it to be hidden or move it to a better location. I tend to my caches almost once a week. Almost all of my caches that are hidden are places I drive past almost daily if not at least once a week. I don't always show a maintenance log unless it has been a while since the last time I log one or it has not been found for a while.
  24. This opens another question then. How long do you visit from your home coordinates? Will you be able to maintain your home coordinate caches while you are visiting your home in mexico in a timely maner? Sounds to me like you shouldn't be allowed to place any caches if this is the case. Don't take this the wrong way, i'm behind you. Just trying to make a point. I'm not trying to break any Groundspeak rules/guidelines but some times it seems that they are more PC then the government. I can understand the guidelines for this though. Obviously these type of caches have become a problem over time and that is why they are no longer allowed.
