  1. Hey there: I will be visiting northern Ohio this weekend and have a couple of Travel Bugs to move on... looking for suggestions of fun caches not too far from civilization that I can get to either with a short hike or on my mountain bike.... Thanks DD

    firecrackers

quote:Originally posted by SA80:Is it ok to put Firecrackers in geocaches? I can't speak with any authority regarding the official policy but my opinion would be: "Don't think it's a good idea." Part of the issue being little cachers finding them. And alos the inherent "potential for an accident" that any firework is gonna present. Be interested to see what others think. DD
  4. quote:Originally posted by Tick & Nammie:I went to the pub yesterday to get the coordinates as the original ones were from a map. The new coors are: N 45 25.412 and W 75 41.754. Hey there: Always interested in what other geocachers are up to to promote and improve... really hope your event turns out to be successful and fun... would love to attend, but I will be in Ohio that weekend -- work but hope to bag a couple of caches as well. Anyhow, best regards!
  5. quote:Originally posted by totvos:First off, my apologies to anyone that was put off by my question. Certainly, I had no intention of pi**ing people off. SNIPPED A LOT So, no offence meant. If you feel inclined to respond to the poll, thank you for taking the time. If not, no problem and have a nice day. Well, first off, you might be taking yourself a mite too sreiously if you think you pissed us off... I don't think you affected us at all. We were simply wondering why someone would poll us with a rather strange question and then had some fun with it... That's part of the spirit of these forums and indeed Geocaching in general. This is fun. Think about it... spending 6 or 700 dollars plus gas money to find trinkets! We're stange people aren't we. Anyhow, back to you and your poll. Why not ask people if they are interested in a competition. Lay it out on the table and give people an opportunity to make an informed decision... rather than playing cat and mouse... or whatever. My thoughts are simply that a competition focused on Geocaching is kinda redundant... Some cachers already are in a competition... some aren't. Unless you have some kickass new way to go about this thing... which I'd love to hear... I can't imagine what you have planned... but then I don't have much imagination. DD out Oh, and thanks for wishing me a nice day... I appreciate that quite a lot. Oh, jeez... another thought. You mentioned "Lurkers" in your last posting... Can't say I've come across any... well, more than the odd one... lurkers here would be people who don't have any logged finds or caches. Other than that, everyone else participates. 6. quote:Originally posted by Cache Canucks: Doh! Looks as though 'totvos' got you too (Unionville)! Holy crap, that means he now knows about 3 of us who live in the Golden Horseshoe area!!! I don't know about you guys, but I'm keeping my lights turned off and huddling in my basement tonight !!! Hey... actually I live in Bracebridge and simply want people to think I'm a Unionvillan! Whoops...! Ok so he knows there are three or four geocachers in the GTA. Is that OK "totvos" ??
  7. quote:Originally posted by gm100guy:This person has 2 posts and became active today. I need more information before I answer this poll. gm100guy http://members.rogers.com/gm100guy/cachepage.htm Think gm100guy has a good point... why are you interested in this? Since you have just joined geocaching, I'll give you a free tip. Why not browse the caches in the Golden Horseshoe region and make a deduction for yourself... a poll is not going to help you in any case... What I mean is this, it will not give you an accurate answer to the type of question you asked... all it will tell you is: "Of the N geocachers who responded, X said they are in the Golden Horseshoe and Y said they were elsewhere in Canada... can't see the value in that. By the way, part of my job is designing surveys! And I am very curious as to the reason for doing this... simply can't see the point. Decodoppler
  8. quote:Originally posted by Baston:This is a testing of the waters (geocachers). To see if there is the interest. If the response is positive then we will start the planning. Anyone who would like to be involved in the planning, is more that welcome. Baston aka John rothwelj@peelsb.com Well John: Not sure how much help I can lend -- I travel a lot and spend most weekends in spring, summer and fall away from home -- however, perhaps I can help with something... when you get enough people together to start defining who has skills at what, let me know. 9. quote:Originally posted by Baston:Each person can have a different idea as to what a conference is, so I did not state what type of conference. And that was to encourage other users would put forth their ideas. Personally, I would like to see reps from the different gps and mapping companies, speakers, workshops, seminars and vendors. In general, a well rounded conference. Baston aka John rothwelj@peelsb.com Hey John: can you give us some idea of how far along you might be in terms of planning. Have you spoken to the "market" (Geocachers) to ask them what they want from this type of event... or is that what we are doing here? You mentioned Manufacturers -- have you contacted any? How about retail outlets and distributors? What traction have you had with potential contributors (speakers presenters etc) and what theme might workshops and presentations take? You mentioned putting this on somewhere "inexpensive" which is sensible, but where exactly is ground zero (lat long will be fine )? And what is your target date for putting this on? Have you got any dependable help to work with you putting a plan together? I ask this for a couple of reasons... even a small day-long event may take several hundred person hours to organize -- so you can't hope to do it without sponsors and help -- and starting something like this without any plan to follow -- even a flexible rough outline -- will make getting sponsors and help much harder. 10. quote:Originally posted by Baston:I have been toying with the idea of a Geocaching Conference. A simple one day event, located at a inexpensive location. ie. a school or community centre. SNIP Hey there John: When you say a Conference, what do you envision? Speakers and exhibits? Workshops and seminars? I am trying to neither be smart nor disrespectful, but without knowing what you have planned and how you plan to differentiate it from one of the hugely successful picnic or pub night socials, it's impossible to state interest -- or lack of it. Perhaps if you share some sort of agenda with us, that'd be helpful... have manufacturers of GPSrs shown interest... will there be structured talks... that sort of thing. Looking forward to hearing back Decodoppler
  11. Well... I use the same type of rechargeables in my GPS and digital camera... Ni-MH 1450 or 1600 mAh. I have some from Kodak, some from Radio Shack and some "Others" name forgotten. I charge them with a dash mounted car charger... try to keep a spare set of two or four on charge and ready to go at all times... never get a "full" battery indicator when these puppies are in the GPSr but they give a very reasonable burn time and have repaid my original investment several times over. My advice... get yourself some tomorrow Hope this helps Decodoppler

Can anyone explain to me how a message or thread gets a "star" rating? I've tried a search for the info and come up blank. Thanks Decodoppler
  13. Well, it sounds to me like cheating the grade... if you do "poor work" then don't delete the comments... imporve what you did... jeeezzz, these kids!!!! Agree with the comment that this cacher does not seem to get what this pastime is all about. Take care
  14. Can understand you being down about this mate but there is a bright side. First, for the few days that it was around, lots of cachers seemed to get a heap of fun from it and it was on a lot of our "to-do-lists" I know it was on mine, and that meant you did the right thing... you'd put a lot of thought and effort into it and the community appreciated that. Some a****** ripped it off. Well, they will always be a prick and will always have to come to terms with doing something that's simply a dumb and selfish act. Sort of the antithesis of what this pastime is all about. F*&$ 'em. Try to forget the bastard(s) and put something else out there soon. Decodoppler
  15. quote:Originally posted by J.A.R.S.:I'll be at Ryerson University tomorrow and I might have time to find a cache. Are there any near Ryerson that you would recommend finding? Hi JARS: Are you lookig for something within walking distance or can you afford the time to drive? There are several interesting caches right downtown very close to where you will be. Why not go online and search for something like "What Time Is It?" GC31A7 and look through the closest caches? Steve

What is the one thing you wish someone had told you started using a GPS? khalua I wish I'd known how much fun Geocaching was going to be... OK! OK! I'll quieten down. I started with a very basic unit and wished I had maps almost from the start... Finding out ahead of time what the best route is either to a cache or between caches is a very useful tool... with Urban and rural caches. Handheld compass is useful too... WAAS is a nice to have if you are going to do any travelling east or west of Calgary... but "Standard" accuracy will get you close enough for most caches... I am in Ontario and the WAAS signal here is very erratic. Take care Decodoppler

A few days later, it "hit" the earth and we had Northern lights and probloms with satellite reception. Radio/TV, computers, and cell phones were effected...guess the GPS units would have been effected too. OK, now that makes sense. It makes me wonder if any of the caches hidden during the solar interference will be more difficult to find than intended! Later

  22. I was out this afternoon looking for my third cache of the day and had two GPSr's in hand... both going crazy -- cache is 104 meters, 85 meters, 12 meters and so on for long enough that I called it quits... didn't have the clue with me and too many likely spots within a 104 meter radius. What's going on? Anyone have a clue? Decdoppler

Cheers, Olar http://www.plauder-smilies.com/wavey.gif We were out on the River (St. Lawrence) on Saturday pm and for a while noticed some fluctuations... Not searching for any caches so did not really take much notice of it... Sunspots? Bad Cesium atoms who knows... Just a bad day for Geocaching.
