  1. Should the plastic TB tags be cheaper for GC.com to make does this mean that their savings will be passed on to cacher/consumers? What will be the price difference if there's to be any difference at all? I like the metal tags - it's the dog tag look, it really fits nicely with tromping through the woods in para-military gear, even if the tag IS connected to a cute, fuzzy, pink troll. . . . Holoholo Kaa . . .
  2. I've gone paperless and I love it but here is my one question/complaint. The map that appears on cache pages does not appear on my PDA so how do other paperless cachers deal with this? if it matters I have: Handspring Visor Neo (8MB) Palm OS Using Plucker, gpx2.html, and easygps to download and view cache pages to my PDA & GPS unit. . . . Holoholo Kaa . . .
  3. I use a Garmin etrex (the yellow one), it's all I've ever used and I'm happy with it. It's very easy to use, very intuitive and the price is right. I recently spotted some for sale here in Nashville, TN at a local outdoor store for $99.95 - ouch, I paid about $130 or $140 when I bought mine a couple of years ago. The etrex does display altitude and I just recently found a cache which did specify an altitude so that feature did come in handy that one time. I always carry a compass with me but I have yet to actually use it. Good luck. Holoholo Kaa
  4. Thanks Spange and crew but I found a friend here locally who was able to download Plucker for me with his cable modem. Problem solved. I may give Isilo a try if I don't like Plucker. Thanks again.
  5. I have been trying unsuccessfully to download the Plucker Desktop for Windows 1.2.0.4 from www.plkr.com but the site is so backed up with internet traffic and my connection is so slow I don't think it's ever going to happen. Does anyone out there happen to have a copy of it on disc that they could send to me. I would gladly reimburse you for shipping cost and the cost of the disc. I have this great PDA that I want to use on my cache outings but right now it's useless without Plucker.
  6. The benchmark I found has the following information upon it's surface: U.S. Coastgaurd GEN - 93 $250 fine or imprisonment for disturbing this mark. I didn't have my GPS unit with me when I found it so I don't have any coordinates for the mark - I was just wandering around in downtown Wilmington, NC looking for a place to eat. The benchmark was imbedded in the top of a low concrete wall along the edge of a large dock in the Cape Fear river. The dock is owned by the Coast Gaurd.
  7. Is there a U.S. Coast Gaurd database for benchmarks placed by them? I found one in Wilmington, NC that I can't find a matching description for on the Geocaching/Benchmark site.
  8. I contacted the owner of the TB and he was happy to provide me with the number so that I could "grab" the bug back. I also notified the current TB host and he has made the needed corrections at his end. Thanks for the good ideas, from now on I will write down the bug numbers just in case. . . quote:Originally posted by The Alethiometrists:If I needed a tag number to do a virtual grab, I'd explain my situation to the bug's owner. They should be happy to help, if you seem sincere. You could also ask whoever has the bug to help. Remember to back-date your log, so things stay in the correct order (and, like I said, make sure the current holders know what you've done, so they can virtually grab it back, and have it in their inventory for drop off). ------------- "Thos' Degrees of Longitude and Latitude in Name, yet in Earthly reality are they Channels mark'd for the transport of some unseen Influence, one carefully assembl'd chain…" – Thomas Pynchon, Mason & Dixon
  9. I left the Team Shuey Racer TB in a cache in NC today, my last day of vacation but before I could get home and get online to log the TB placement someone found it and logged it. This automatically removed it from my inventory so when I logged my visit I could not log that I left the TB in the cache. Is there any way to log my placement?
  10. I live in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Nashville and just down the street on the corner is what looks like a very old benchmark. It's a round, metal disc mounted flush in the top of a small concrete pedestal (8 inches high and about 3 or 4 inches wide). At first glance it doesn't appear to have any writing on it but when the light hits it just right I can barely make out a few ghostly letters. How can I determine if this is or was a benchmark? Thanks, Ukulele Andy

  13. I have tried to upload pics to the site but they always look pixelated. I've been keeping the file sizes at or under 100K as per the instructions I've seen on the site regarding jpg file size. And at the resolution I'm shooting I'm able to make a 5x7 with no pixelization. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong because I see other pics on the site that look fine. Can anyone help me? 15. I recently visited the Outer Banks of NC - one particular benchmark I went looking for is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. It has moved about 2900 feet southwest of it's original location. Should I count that as a find even though the structure has moved? Ukulele Andy

  17. I have an etrex (the yellow one) and I love it. For me the greatest features are it's size and ease of use but mainly it's the small size. There are a lot of urban caches near me so the smaller sized GPS unit makes my hunting more inconspicuous. A GPS with a fat external antennae would make it hard to blend in with my urban surroundings. I purchased a belt clip accessory which hides most of the yellow and makes it look like a cell phone. However, everyone has thier own tastes so I would suggest going to your local dealer to find out firsthand which unit will work best for you. Good Luck Ukulele Andy

  19. When I download Benchmark coordinates into Easy GPS on my computer the coordinate numbers are different when I open up the folder but when I send this information to my GPS unit the numbers match up with the coordinates on the website. Why would this be happening? Also, are the coordinates for Benchmarks in a different format than what we use for Caches? I noticed that each Benchmark coord. has NAD 83 written next to it - do I need to change map datum info in my etrex before I start searching for Benchmarks?

  22. I have looked for two travel bugs that according to the website should've been in the caches I found but it was not to be. I've also discovered two other caches with log entries indicating the same. Is this a common problem? I was considering buying and releasing a travel bug but now I'm not so sure. If I release one I want it to actually travel - not become an addition to a travel bug collection. Any thoughts? UKULELE ANDY

  24. Would Sbell have been more pleased to find McDonalds toys (clearly an advertisement) or pornography? For me the hunt is the best part of the experience, I could care less what was inside and I'm not about to remove anything because I don't like it and do what with it? - is someone throwing away Bibles out there, not me - I'm not a religious "fanatic" but there's no way you'd ever catch me throwing away a bible. Live and let live. Just curious - how many of you who are anti-religion believe that we are visited regularly by creatures from outer space? UKULELE ANDY
  25. Everyone has given me a little peace of mind about approaching another geocacher while in the middle of a hunt. My thinking was that Geocaching is for the most part a solitary sport - I didn't want to break any unwritten rules and ruin a cachers hunt. However, in the future I will assess the situation and if signs seem favorable I'll approach and join forces. Thanks UKULELE ANDY
