  1. With some of the other map programs you can download maps from many sources at no cost. You pick the area you wish to hunt and depending on your memory card size you can download detailed maps of any area. It suprised me that this was not available with the Geocaching Android program. I was hoping I was wrong. Before I use the other Map program I go to a WIFI spot and download the maps and it is free. Thanks for the reply
  2. I have Geocaching for Android installed on my Samsung Galaxy Tab and it seems I have to have a data plan or by near WIFI to see maps. Is there a way to preinstall them on my Tab? I also use Backcountry Navigator and can load any maps I wish but it does not seem to have all the information on Caches I want. Am I missing something or do I have to have a data plan, which I do not intend to purchase. Thanks guys
  3. I have not been doing much Caching yet this year but I just went to Google Earth, which I used all the time when finding caches to hunt and it says that "Network Link KLM Disabled" What the heck does that mean. I clicked on the link and have found out nothing. I think this feature was very valuable and hope that Google and Geocaching have not had another falling out and we have to suffer for it. Can anyone fill me in on what the problem is? Did "I" do something wrong?
  4. I did get the pro version after using it for a month. I am not sure of all the extra features but I did it mostly because I like to support apps that I use and this one I love. I will be in a non 3g area this weekend (I am pretty sure) and after I return from caching I write my notes in Locus and upload them (just like a regular GPS, except I don't have to hook up a connection to the GPS) when I get home. I also download maps while at home on wifi for areas I will be traveling to so I have them when there is no connection and I don't keep downloading the same maps each time, Picture me sitting along the shore of the American River enjoying my evening cocktail and logging away. I bought the Pro last night and have been playing with it a bit. I can not seem to download maps in much detail for some reason. I try to zoom in on them and they go all blury. I see there are different choices you can make while downloading them and have not found one that zooms worth a dang. Do I have to make smaller choices when downloading a map?
  5. I just downloaded the Free version of LOCUS for my samsung Galaxy Tab and will give it a try. Thanks much. Now I have to figure that sucker out
  6. I don't really understand what you are saying I guess. I thought the purpose of the app was to help you find the cache, not to burn up a data plan. That is sorta my point in my original post. If this app will not do the job because I have to be hooked up 3G with it, what apps are there out there that are better? I don't know, maybe this one will do what I want but if someone knows how I would be happy to know. I just don't want a data plan to use this thing. I can hook up Wifi before leaving home and download the information, I have plenty of room with a 32 gig memory card and then go out and hunt caches. I know it can be done and just wanted to know if it can be done with this program Royal
  7. I have a new Samsung Galaxy Tab and bought the Android app for geocaching. It works great when on line but I do not want to use my Tab except with Wifi. Can I do it with the Geocaching App? I also have the BackCountry Navigation Pro on the TAB and I can load the caches while on Wifi and it will still work when I am off like but it is not as nice as the Geocaching application. Very useable though. I thought the Geocaching app was pretty slick until I canceled my Verizon account and now it does not seem to work when I am out in the field. Have I some setting wrong or do I have to go back to the BackCountry application? It seems silly that once I have the caches loaded on the Tab that I would have to be on line to find the caches. Thanks guys and gals. Royal
  8. I went out today to do some maint on three of my cashes that were reported wet. I set the GPS to go to the first one and it worked perfectly. The arrow pointed me to the cashe and the countdown as I neared it worked great. I then set it to go to my next one, in the same general area a half mile off and headed toward it. Now the goofy GPS was pointing me 180 degrees off but the countdown was still working fine. I ignored the arrow and headed to where I knew the Cashe is. I did not know exactly as I placed it a couple years ago but knew generally where it was. As I neared the thing I noticed the goofy arrow adjusted toward the cashe but still with the back of the arrow, not the point. The countdown still worked and I finally found it using that. My batteries are fresh and I had done a full reset a month ago and reloaded the Michigan cashes with GSAK. Has my GPS had a stroke or what? Are they worth getting repaired or is the cost of repair as much as a new GPS? if that is what I need. I hope I have some setting wrong but doubt it. Royal
  9. I once saw a cute little airhead putting her contacts in while driving down I-75 near Detroit during rush hour. That was years ago and I am sure she is dead now. Traffic accident I suspect...Probably poked her eye out too What about that second link scares you? Is The Man really coming down too hard on people who kill others? I am all for it myself. A driver is suppose to be driving the car, not watching tv or talking on a phone or texting. They are no more alert than a dang drunk. I don't feel the cops are intruding on me, I feel the airhead is intruding on my rights. We forget who the enemy is here. Hahahahahhahaah Got me!! ... or looking at cute girls... sorry... way to easy...

  12. Personally I just like going to areas I would never have known about if it were not for Geo Cashing. I don't care if there is anything in the cashe other than a notebook and pencil, I never swap anythng, just sign the book. When I hide a cashe I try to put it in an area that I find interesting and think others might too. I try not to hide is so well that it will be a huge challange to find it, after all it is the scenery that I am trying to draw people too but I do try to put them in an area that nobody has to worry about mugglers. I love the out of doors and this gets me there. I do not care for the little cashes and try to filter them out. That is just me. Cashes in Urban areas do not interest me. Cashes on private property do not interest me.

  14. And none do what we got from the one that is gone. Once again, What function is going to be cut off next? Will it be one you use and enjoy? Oh heck, to some if it not their ox being gored it is ok. Seems sorta playground attitude to me

    Google Earth

Thanks for the reply. That is nuts though! I found that feature extremely useful, especially when showing others on forums how many cashes there are in their areas. Why in the world would they discontinue such a useful feature? That had to be political or financial. It can not be common sense or care for the user. This sucks By the way, who is the "THEY" that did away with it? Google or Groundspeak? "They" are sure not looking out for "Us" the user

    Google Earth

How in the heck do I get all the cashes to show in Google Earth. I had it before but formatted my computer. Now I go to my page and can not find the KLM file to download. Where did the dang thing go or are my old eyes a failing me? Thanks in advance for any help

    Google Maps

I just formatted my drive and am reloading everything but I can not find the link to download the cashes to Google Earth like I could before. Has it chaged or am I blind I am sure it was on my profile page but I can not find it now. I found this very useful and sure hope it is still available. Thanks, Royal
  18. I have used GSAK for managing my cashes. I see that if we have a Garmin Nuvi in our car we can use it for cashing. http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/index.html I happen to have one and I followed the directions and the dang thing just works great so far. It is completely paperless! I loaded the cashes on my Nuvi and headed from my home in Waterford Mi to my place in Roscommon Mi taking I-75. I turned the thing on and when I got up the road to the area I started hitting the cashes loaded in my Nuvi it signaled me at every one. I had the nuvi set to signal me at any within 3000 ft of my travel. It gave an alarm and a bar at the top of the screen told me there was a cashe. I touched the bar and it displayed EVERYTHING that is on the web page, discription, and all the comments other finders posted. You click GO and the normal display shows and takes you turn by turn to the cashe area. I guess you then have to go to off road mode to go to the cashe. I have not gotten that far into it yet. I did follow it to a cashe I had already found to try to see how close it would take me and it got me withing 50 ft or so but there was a guy walking his dog and watching me and I just decided to come back later. I doubt I would use it for pinpointing but who knows. It should work great! I have not figured that all out yet but it sure guides you right to the area nicely. I am sure glad I bought a Nuvi last winter
  19. Actually if there are a lot of people in the area I just don't hunt the cashe. I like the wilderness cashes and pretty much ignore the rest. I saw one that was in a Walmart parking lot and there is no way I would hunt that sucker. That is just me though
  20. TFTC is simply a short way of saying 'Thanks For The Cache. I refuse to call other cachers rude or lazy simply because they were thankful. I do, however, make judgements about people who call others rude or lazy. Further, I refuse to get upset by tiny things that don't affect anything or anyone, such as when some other cacher logs 'TFTC'. Good for you. I will try to pattern my life after you. I do not call cashers rude or lazy. I call rude lazy cashers rude and lazy. Most are fine. You must be a wonderful person.
  21. Rude or lazy? Quite an indictment. Perhaps you need to implement ALR. "Only people saying nice things about my cache may log it."? One does wonder about those cachers. But calling them rude or lazy seems a bit presumptuous. Different strokes for different folks. Reminds me of the find I had deleted 'Because you never have anything nice to say about our caches." (It was hidden behind the 'Handicapped Parking' sign nailed to the side of a restaurant. Nope. Couldn't think of anything nice to say about it.) Hey! I'm happy if people find my caches! I was posting MY opinion of these rude people, I was not speaking for you or anyone else. I consider them rude and lazy. You are happy if people find my cashes, you say. That is good. You are happy. I am happy if people take the time to do more than TFTC. Is that ok with you? I don't set my standards by what others think.
  22. I agree with Team Go Fast. There are some things I just don't want to know I find myself using my Honda Helix much more while casheing, it gets 70mpg
  23. A small story or anecdote in the online log is nice to see Much better than "NICE" which is what some cachers in our area post.. I agree. There would be no hobby without those that hide the cashes.
  24. Oh I caught that right off. I have met quite a few cashers and there are few that would insinuate that a person that did not put out a cashe that was exciting to them means that it does not deserve a comment. I don't figure there are many out there thinking that way. Just a few. I don't get many like that but it come to mind and I thought it might be interesting to see what the general feeling was.
