  1. 1) download Firefox 2) make Firefox your default browser 3) never use IE again 4) check for something along the lines of 'open new links in new browser window' or something like that in the prefs, and make sure it isn't checked.... your browser may be thinking that when you click on 'decrypt' you are going to another page and it's 'helpfully' opening a new browser window for you, when it should just redirect you.... HTH M
  2. I agree with this one...I was up reading http://www.lib.noaa.gov/edocs/CONTENTS.htm until the wee hours one morning...facinating stuff (to me at least)....now only if I could find the marker that is a stone's throw from my house! (one of the first of the coastal survey) M
  3. http://macgpspro.com/index.html this should do it.... I have no experience with it since I have a Magellan 210 which GPSPRO don't wanna play with, but the 60c is listed on their list of compatible receivers.... gooder luck...HTH M
  4. keep dreaming and crawl out of yer Dilbert cubicle... there's millions of us Mac-heads out there....just waiting for the 'go' code.... prepare to be assimilated.... M
  5. how about locking down the wifi with a WAP or even ASCII password, which is on the thumb drive? and you don't need to have a webcam out the front window, either, you could get a wifi cam & stick it in a tree...create a page that only takes a pic when called for (& therefore not sending out pics of an empty street & using up bandwidth) how about for the web log, make it only a local 'intranet' page so that only people in the WiFi LAN can access it & post the find.....keep you from having to check IP logs... cool & geeky & wish it is going to be near me M
  6. bzzt...thanks for playing that sad old tired tune....at the time, Apple had $3B cash and was in litigation with MS because it seemed a chunk of Apple code was found in some MS stuff...they bought $150M of non-voting stock & had to promise to keep developing Office for 5 years....they also made a bundle when they sold the stock... hardly a bail out to keep them 'alive'...please do a bit of research...Google is your friend also, according to the latest quarterly report, almost 50% of sales in Apple stores were to switchers....I guess those people are all graphics people? more likely people who just need their machines to work, and not spend their time futzing with the registry you also forgot to include video/film editors, audio professionals, and IT geeks that love the UNIX underpinnings....and lack of swiss cheese holes you forget that without Apple, there would be no Microsoft....and without the Mac OS, there would be no Windows...who would they copy? we can go around this stump forever....a computer is simply a tool for getting a job done...I made a comment based on people's fear to putting a 'unknown' USB drive in their machine, Mac users do not have this fear because of the inherent security of OSX (silly things like NOT being able to run at root without a password, an alert before running an execute for the first time, not having an intergrated Explorer)... [rant] oh yeah, and I generally run around with a bit of a chip because of the fight with GPSr manufacturers making windows-only software....kinda like going to a website that says you HAVE to use IE....when Safari, Opera, Firefox & Camino are all better browsers and MORE standards compliant to IE...some dweeb just decided to put a tag in there looking for the browser type...usually all I have to do is change a quick pref to trick it...but it's very annoying...it would be better if the HTML coders just used accepted standards... [/rant]
  7. I think it's a great idea....I just might do it myself...add a pic of a carton or something...you also must upload it to a web archive for the TB so all can share.... M
  8. If I wanted to play games, I'd buy a PS or Xbox... and just to satisfy your curiosity, go to http://guide.apple.com/index.lasso & look up games.... and since when is Best Buy a 'computer store'? and since we're on the subject, last time I looked, almost half the software titles I saw there, or CompUSA for that matter, were anti-virus...what do THAT tell you? It's a shame you can't put a out-of-the box PC online these days without having it infected...or worry about using a memory stick....really...I feel for you guys encumbered with IE embedded in your systems... and yes, mine's bigger M
  9. well, considering Macs have supported, but not NEEDED a 2-button mouse for umpteen years now, I would agree.... the difference with the interface standards on Macs is that anything that can be done with a right-click (or control-click on a Mac) is also available from the top-level pulldown menus. You don't NEED to right click to access functionality, you don't HAVE to guess which things are right-clickable and which are not, since all those functions are available from the top. In windows, you have certain functions that are ONLY accessable that way, and if you are unfamilar with a program, you find yourself right clicking all over the place guessing where a function command is hidden. oh, and is TCP/IP from 8.6 the best you can do? that was what, 10 years ago? Macs came standard with ethernet holes long before commidity PCs did...I have nightmares recalling the conflicts that happened once we stuck nic cards in machines.... M
  10. this is no longer appliciable since it was Superseded by C37.04-1999 that, and I think the new mag safe power adapter is the ultimate breaker.... as a data collection device to detect gasoline, naphtha, light cycle oils and similar distillates in liquid form at ambient tempture, why yes, I'm sure they are so is a spoonful of sugar, 55MPH, and the Pythagorean theorem, but none of them have anything to do with computing (in general) either. any my machines STILL don't get virii, and I don't need anti-virus bloatware, and I only reboot them once a month or so.... M
  11. what kind of self-important, simple-minded guy is this? Liability, from caching? Is he not worried in GENERAL about liability? If so, he better close all the parks to ANYONE, cuz you never know when a family out for a stroll might trip over a pebble & sue....or a kiddie gets nipped by a squirrel! This, to me, is a case where someone with an over-inflated sense of self-importance gets a bug up their butt and decides on THIS they will stand firm and exert any and all authority they have...logic & common sense have no bearing on the debate... I'm sure his wee park is high on the list for Al Queda....better lock it down tite! Code magenta! wadda maroon....gawd I dislike running into people like that M
  12. oh we really don't wanna go down this road, do we? you have your anologies mixed up...a Mac is a Ferrari compared to a Dull Taurus. [rant] I have 10 Mac's still in use...the oldest being a G3 powerbook...all work fine, and do everything I need a computer to do, except for 2 and ONLY 2 programs....one of which is the Magellan caching program. They are compatible with every standard out there in the real world thank you very much, and I've been a very happy Apple customer since 1981.... oh yeah, and I run NO anti-virus/spyware garbage on any of my machines....don't need to [/rant] my only request for this cache is that it be somwhere near me! M
  13. hmmm...maybe you'd need to restrict the Cache & drive to Macs? give us one thing to do in this game that the PC users can't do....instead of us constantly fighting with PC only GPS software....
  14. considering the prices of these things nowdays, I'd say it's worth the trouble....and if it's hidden fairly well, you'd probably be ok. Sounds fun! my powerbook is always with me....how did I survive before a laptop? Mike
  15. Having been wearing a wetsuit every time I was there I don't remember getting the itchies ... but ... I do remember fondly (being careful to "code" things up a bit and keep this G rated) that UF isn't that far away and the effect that fact had on the scenery at the park and ... well, um... the "wildlife" went wild a few times (much to the enjoyment of a bunch of Army guys practicing their SCUBA techniques. Ya know, I wish we had rebreathers sometimes. well, there was that, but we used to call it that from the rocks that would itch yer tush as you floated down on yer tube.... M
  16. doncha mean the "itchmytushie" river? ahh yes....Scouting memories.... M
  17. Not yet. There are issues with USB right now. So I haven't been able to evaluate that. They are working to clear that up. I'll let you know. I am using a Garmin GPSMap60C. I will be loading GSAK tomorrow and I'm sure from what I've seen that it will work fine. But until the USB issue is resolved I won't be able to tell how it communicates. Stay tuned. yes, I was afraid of that...please keep us updated with the USB connection issues.... I wonder if Boot Camp has the same USB issues? My guess would be not, since when using it, the machine becomes Windows, and not a Virtual Windows... hate to hafta blow a 10G partition on it though.... have you traded data between the 2 sides yet? how's that work? M
  18. so you're saying it works with thinks like GSAK & your GPSr SW? what kinda receiver do you have? M
  19. If I had a ha-mmerrrr....I'd hammer in the mor-or-or-ning....
  20. Huh? Magellan units that have USB all work as Mass storage devices - GPSBabel can read and write directly to the SD card's file system. I though it was Garmin's USB implmentation that's a bit flaky. d'oh! whoopsie...my bad...I was confused with MacGPSPro....THAT one don't play nice with Magellan USB....neither do MacSimple GPS yes, My Magellan 210 shows up on my Mac as a disk, I just haven't found the easiest way to put a list of Caches on it yet just using my Mac...I keep having to go thru the peecee I have & use the Magellan software... M doofus
  21. from what I've read so far, the consensus seems to be going towards allowing people who were afraid to buy a Mac cuz they needed some piece of Windows-only sw, to get a Mac, use their special SW, yet use the OSX side for everything else...& once they see how much better life would be on this planet if they did EVERYTHING with OSX, they will ONLY want to use the Mac side, creating a bigger demand for OSX software, bringing about true computing nirvana, peace on earth, goodwill towards all peoples, and OSX software that talks to GPSrs.. I hope.... M
  22. that be all well & gooder, 'ceptin' that Dr. Lipe hasn't updated his software to play nicely with USB...specifically Magellan USB gawd knows I don't...I have 8 working Macs & ONE Windoze box...I got it to run ONE kinda homebrew program to run a couple digitak disk recorders I have....I also use it with GSAK & the Magellan software It would be a bandaid until one of the GPSr manufacturers gets off their butt...I know Garmin has promised by the end of the year...we'll see... Mike
  23. Mac users should have heard by now of Apple's announcement of 'Boot Camp', a beta, combo firmware update and install hack (sorta) that will allow your Intel-Mac to boot into Windows...initial reports have been good...Walter Mossberg gave it hig marks, as did PC Mag... http://ptech.wsj.com/archive/ptech-20060406.html anyone out there with a newish MacIntel try it yet? and have you tried it with any of the GPSr loading programs? anyone willing to desecrate their Mac by making it boot into windows & give this a shot? There's also a virtualization program called 'Parallels' which will go Boot Camp one better, by allowing Windows to float in a virtual machine while you are running OSX. http://www.parallels.com/download/ anyone? Of all my machines, none is (yet) a Macintel (fear of Rev. A doncha know) so I can't test...curious how these options will handle the USB gazinta/gazouta to the GPSr. Mike
  24. Just to be precise, it was an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent (they're downstairs at the pier) and not "Law & Order" the mothership , they're upstairs at the pier.... it was episode #87 "The Unblinking Eye" and aired 5-8-05 (gotta love Google) M
