  1. I really appreciate good coordinates. I have been to some caches where there was enough time spent collecting the data. If you want to make it tougher put it on a mountain, in a ravene or 4 miles back in the woods. But always give good coordinates. I also really appreciate a parking area location.
  2. Don't see much of it here in Cantral, PA. LOOONNNGGG cold winters, bears and snakes help to keep the boys moving. There aresome locals living near survivalist lifestyles but they are part of the local community.
  3. When my merigreen gets the "loose needle" syndrome I take the bearing to the cache from the display and put it into my compass and site the line. Although the needle swings funny the bearing to the target in the bearing readout is correct. It has worked twice for me to help reduce find time. I have modified my compass screen to also show me the bearing readout.
  4. I have Mapsend Topo for my magellan GPS. It will allow me to set large numbers of way points and save them in files. The maps are also scaleable and can be easily printed to your printer. I am very happy with this set up. I frequently will use very detailed maps for an individual cache and then have an overview map that shows me all the caches I have posted for the days hikes.
  5. My outfit is a LowePro camera bag. It contains: Pentax PZ1 with 28 to 80 zoom 100 to 300 zoom filters & film Magellan MERIGREEN glasses cell phone pen whistle compass defense spray I am seldom more than 1.5 miles from the road and it usually only takes an hour or less to reach the cache.
  6. The amount of time I have to spend seriously limits my caching. If I have the time I will try for just about any cache
  7. The article that is linked to here clearly states that sulfur powder is a chigger repellant.
  8. I am using a merigreen with mapsend and a 16m sd card. Works great and the maps have been right on. Still have room for more in the 16m card.
  9. Just for the record, I am not a chain saw massacre type. I spent 9 years as a scout master and have taught low impact camping methods. However, WE BELONG in the woods, we just need to use our noodles when we are to avoid unnecessary damage. My boys learned this, "leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but pictures." Get into the woods and enjoy!
  10. North central PA has seen an increase in ticks this year. Some areas seem to be more infested than others. Went to 4 caches with no difficulty but teh area near the local golf course is a real hot spot. None there last year.
  11. I am tired of having people act like we were dropped here from space ships and not actually part of the environment. In almost all cases my walking in and out of an area has NO environmental impact. Did I leave a footprint? Its no worse than the HUGE footprint right beside it from the Elk that walked this way. The world IS NOT a museum it is an ever changing complex system. We are part of that system. My simple movements through the ecosystem are NOT a danger to its continued existence. I also like managed forests much better than what has been foisted on us today by the "NO CUT, NO CLEAR" types. The huge fires in Colorado are a direct result of that philosophy. nuff said
  12. Long pants, a good stick and leaving your brains turned on are really all you need to avoid getting bit. I tend not to sneak around when I go off trails. I stomp right along so all the critters can hear me!

  14. I recently sent the requested data to Deb Brown for the Red Hill Tower mark. The official datasheet at NGS is now marked destroyed. So you don't have to be a surveyor or engineer if you rdata is good.
  15. You can get the Meridian GPS and the Mapsend Topo software with a 16meg SD card at Walmart for about $300. That's what I did and it has been great. The unit works well even in deep tree cover.
  16. Here is the NGS official position Mike Note: For destroyed marks do one of the following: 1) If you found the actual marker separated from its setting, you may report the point as destroyed. To do so please send the report on the destroyed mark as an email to Deb Brown (Deb.Brown@noaa.gov); if you send this email please do not submit the current form; instead Deb will submit the report for you. In addition, please submit proof of the mark's destruction via actual disk, rubbing, photo or digital picture (preferred) to Deb Brown. Deb Brown's mailing address is as follows: Deb Brown, N/NGS143 National Geodetic Survey, NOAA 1315 East West Highway, #8400 Silver Spring, MD 20910 2) If you did not find the actual marker, then you should enter notes concerning evidence of its possible destruction as text records and select "Not recovered, not found" as the condition of mark.
  17. Survey tech is correct. I started looking for in town markers this week. Everyone of them was destroyed by some form of new construction or another. A highscholl was demolished and the road widened, a bridge culvert was replaced when the road was repiared, railroad freight station and bank building were demolished. I am going into th eboonies next to see what I can find.
  18. I have seen several references to witness posts in the descriptions of marker locations. What are they??? Thanks
