  1. You can not turn WAAS off as far as I can see although there must be some provision for it in Meridians sold outside of the US. There is no reason for a US user to want to turn WAAS off. It does not interfere with the operation of the unit and markedly improves accuracy.
  2. I think it is excellent and I think that most of the folks here want a silk purse for the cost of a sows ear. The software works well in my magellan and it has some extraordinary detail in places where the base data had the detail. NONE of the uploadable map software has the detail of the 7.5" USGA maps. Even NG topo relies on uploads from users for most of its trail information. I own Mapsend and Maptech Terrain Navigator. Together they give me what I need for a fair price.
  3. All the Meridians come out of auto averaging so easily that I have NEVER had autoaveraging cause me a problem. No Hulas are required. My problem is keeping them in averaging mode when changing hands. That said, there does seem to be an algorithim in the receiver that takes into account the speed you are walking and does location projections. I set the alarm for 100 feet. When it goes off I stop and wait about 30 seconds for the device to catch up. I can then usually proceed directly and slowly to the cache site.
  4. Wulf, Magellan jst released a firmware upgrade that will give you this feature. It was not available in earlier versions. See the other post in this forum on the upgrade.
  5. I have installed the update and everything seems to be working very well.
  6. I just went through the process of upgrading to 4.02. The unit (merigreen) seems fine. It took the amount of time it usually does to catch the birds and then the local position seemed correct. I like the on and off switch protection. So far so good. THANKS Magellan!
  7. I don't own this receiver but if it talks to your computer you probably can download all the tracks, erase the ones in your receiver and then upload just the ones you want.
  8. Buy as much memory as you can afford. I jave my 128mb card full. I have something like 10 states in it! I also store tracks and waypoints and lots of other stuff on there
  9. I use Terrain Navigator and I am very happy with it. I went through the comparison between it and NG Topo about 3 months ago. I could not find any substantial difference in functionality but the Maptech product can be much less expensive. You can buy entire regions of the country for $149(US) while NG Topo will cost you $99 per state. The maps that print out on my HP printer look like they came off of the shelf at the map store. Terrain Navigator also makes it simple to share maps with others that don't own the software.
  10. Yu can save the maps directly to the card using a USB card reader. I beleive you can also save the existing map under a different name before you upload the new region
  11. I have usd Mapsend TOPO since Late May and it has been very valuable and the topo information has been very good. The occasional inaccuracy is from the base data that it is derived from not something Magellan has done. I have seen some grossing about the software from time to time but when I analyzed what they were *****ing about it usually didn't affect the usefulness of the software.
  12. It usually is within 30 ft of elevation. It gets better if I let it average
  13. When I detect yellow jackets in an area that has a high probability of people attacks I kill them. I have had to instances right on my own property where my wife or a guest was stung for no more of a reason than being in the area. I frequently carry wasp and hornet spray and have dispatched several nests along trails, driveways and other frequently used pathways. I don't believe that their benefit to harm ratio is positive.
  14. RLS, welcome aboard! I haven't seen your log on before so excuse me if you've been around a long time. It's really great to get another survey professional on the board that's willing to help the novices. Survey Tech has been guiding us along here with great info for a long time now and has really helped a lot of us understand what we are seeing and what some of the esoteric surveying terms mean. He has been a real fan and helper of our effort. This whole thread kind of bothered me because there was an insuation by GuruBob that wew were finding and destroying these markers for our own entertainment. As should be quite clear by now, nothing can be farther from the truth. The folks here have been excited about this project and have a great respect for the work that went into establishing this system. We frequently have the time and desire to go looking for the tough ones and guys like Rogburn have found ones the pros have listed as not found. Other than GuruBob we have had great support from the Survey professionals who participate here. RLS Glad your here! Thanks Survey tech!
  15. I also use a 128 because that is the biggest that was available at the time. I have been told that even the guge 512 card will work. I think that if if yu buy a card from www.crucial.com they will take it back if it doesn't work and their prices are competitive. I have seem a 256 card at ecost for $79.00 after $30.00 rebate.
  16. Waxed laces also will not pick up the burrs but the leather laces mentioned are stronger.
  17. Unfortunately this will not print a text listing of way points. It will however control if they print on a map.
  18. I have the lowest meridian the green. The removable SD card and the additional functionality that it brings is really worth it. I particularly like to save tracks and groups of waypoints in separate files. Also, although the 23mb of memory in the Sporttrak is adequate and will hold most of a state, the amount of mapping that will go on 128mb SD card is incredible. The card will also allow you to break your maps into smaller pieces that run more quickly in the GPSr. The Meridian is bigger than the Sportrak but I have had no problem handling or carrying it.
  19. This is my proces with my Magellan Meridian. I set the GPSr on the cache location and let it average for 10 minutes. This is usually good enough and is within about 10 feet in the woods. If I am having a bad sattelite day i will come back on another day and check it out.
  20. I like that and it shortens to GT. Way too many nay sayers around here buy thats people. I spent two years in elective office and I would never do it again. Nice Job GT
  21. Actually , no, I have been looking for the same thing but I don't think it exists.
  22. I have downloaded the version 10 for windows and I cannot get it to run. I extracted it to a directory called GPSBABEL and when I try to run the EXE it appears to open a DOS window that immediately closes. Any idea whats going on? I'm running an HP Pavilion with 512 MB of memory and windows XP home addition. Thanks
  23. That is one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. In Buffalo, NY there are a series of parks designed by the famous architect Olmsted and there is one cache hiden in each park.
  24. I always use the GPS for Horizontal stations because their coordinates are every accurate. Its the vertical stations that tend to be scaled to within 6 seconds
  25. i think we need to coach them on the difference
