  1. I have a Garmin 60csx and it works very well with turn by turn directions. It does on ocassion have me turn off a road and then back on the same road a little further down the road. Regarding the maps I have city navigator and one unlock code gave me the entire US. Regarding updates my friend has old map data and does not have problems with not having data (1.5 years old). Personally I do not think them map software costs that much and do not see why the companies should update them free. If you buy other computer/electronic software and a new version comes out do you get that free?
  2. Don't know about the original post but I did sit here vegetating in front of the computer screen eating Burger King. I found it pretty ironic.
  3. I'll add my $.02 worth on the topic. I really love good virtuals and when in new areas have a tendancy to make sure they are on my list (not to jack up my numbers). However I totally understand them being removed from this site since I did one that was a beer distributor and one that took you to a park and had you go do different parts of the park and get information to answer questions. Unfortunately there was nothing historical and it took you to the play area which you could see from the parking area 15' away a bench or creek (coords were partway between both), and a few other places. I was so pissed that I wasted my time that I did not even log it. I have driven by the park a few more times and it gets my BP up. I think the offerred "solutions" of getting info from the the monument, structure, etc and leading you to a micro is the best solution and I personally do not think it detracts from the "virtual" nature.
  4. I will pile on with answer B. There are a few cachers around me that do not post DNF until they search 3,4 or5 times. When they go back and finally find it they then change the DNF to found it. I have not hidden many caches but if they due that on one of mine I would erase there found it log. To me if it is not important enough to log a DNF then it is not important enought to log a found it either. Not trying to start anything by any means but I am expecting to see the little yellow guy eating popcorn coming up soon.
  5. I have done on: GCRA1Q. If the cache owner was not there the night the group of us did it; we would not have been able find it. All the numbers has been washed out/off by rain and nature. Plan on re-applying frequently.
  6. Thought Ihad posted to this thread before but guess I did not. I have done the BoB series in Chicago (sadly they are archived) and searched for 110 total and found 98 or 99 in about 6 hours. I did not haveany mapping software so it could have been faster. I also ran it solo. It was a great experience but would not likely do it solo again. I have also had fun finding just a couple in a day. Initially I cached primarily solo but as I meet more cachers I find that I do a lot of my cache runs with other cachers to make the experience more enjoyable. I still solo cache but usually just grabbing caches when I am in an area, going somewhere, or going to an area to hike and such. Like many other have mentioned it is about the experience whether you find 1 or 100.
  7. You can also check who visited your cache after the bug was dropped. You can contact the people (especially if it is a new cacher) that visited after the TB was dropped to see if they picked it up or noticed it in the cache.
  8. I actually am up to about 10 for the year. I actually had some on me in early March when there was still snow on the ground. Think it will be a long summer. The most I ever had on me at one time was around 50. I had my dog with me and I pulled a probably the same amount off him. I gave him a bath and still was pulling them off for 4 days. I have had him vaccinated luckily. I guess I hit a nest or something. Regarding the removal I am not sure if this works or not but... I was told when I was younger that they breath through there "skin" and that if you cover them in Vaseline that they was back themselves out to breath. Never had one embedded enough to have to give it a try.
  9. Use a hiking stick for its intended purpose as well as holding back briars, branches and such . Also use it to poke where you want to look for a cache to avoid getting bitten by something. Just yesterday I saw a snake slither back into a stone wall near ground zero. The cache was behind the rock the snake was on top of.
  10. I recently lost a geocoin and felt horrible. I contacted the owner and told them about the loss. The owner suggested instead of replacing it to just buy one of my own and release it. Therefore I now have my first geocoin in circulation. I made the goal to find the owner of the coin I lost.
  11. I will throw my 2 cents in the pot about hoarding. I have found exactly 1 YJTB and one someone was holding onto it I asked them to move it along. I was sent an email that kindly told me to kiss his backside and he moved the TB to a graveyard. When he GJTB came out I got one to start on its journey and purposely put it in a cache requiring a hike. The TB was picked up and traveled exactly 0 miles after I placed it. I posted a note about the "thieves" (I was pretty ticked) and received an email last week stating they were not thieves and had misplaced there cache bag which they just found. My thought would be to check my inventory and post notes on the trackables that were misplaced. They have yet to move along the TB after there email to me last week. I wonder how these hoarders would feel if a cacher decided to keepe their TB so someone else did not steal it or took there cache so it didn't get muggled. Same difference in my opinion.
  12. 9+ months with 20 falsefinders. I went after this cache (had not read previous logs) and found it in a No Tresspassing Area to boot. Lengthy but somewhat humorous and somewhat pitiful. Cache Logs April 23 by me SBA Not sure about the missing cache but according to what I found it takes tresspassing to enter the area. I saw signs to not tresspass on all sides of the cache. Not sure if they are new or not. March 11 by falsefinder #20 posts needs maintenance (603 found) Cache is missing, the only thing left is the lid. March 11 by falsefinder #20 Well I found the lid, I can see from the logs that this one has been missing for a while. I took a picture of the lid but deleted it on my phone on accident. This cache needs to be replaced. (See next/previous log)] February 22 by falsefinder #19 Yep cache is gone, all that remains is the lid. Sign the lid. 1 of 14 today, after a 27 cache run yesterday. February 20 by falsefinder #18 found it a while ago there is no logbook just a lid to sign February 17 by DNFer Great view of Las Vegas but no tires around...looked around but no luck finding cache. February 15 by falsefinder #17 FOUND THE LID & A BRICK; SIGNED THE BRICK February 15 by falsefinder #16 I won't repeat what everyone else has blogged. Nice view. February 1 by falsefinder #15 Found it! I think. The only thing there was a white round lid. Others had signed the lid so I did also. Nice view of vegas though. Thanks. January 27 by falsefinder #14 Found and logged on the lid as so many others have. Also, dropped and retrieved a Geocoin for mileage. January 27 by falsefinder #13 found it...only a lid..needs help..jason@coral [view this log on a separate page] January 14 by falsefinder #12 Beautiful LID , Hope it gets fixed up soon! TFTC! January 1 by falsefinder #11 Found this trashed cache while with my Geo-Dad, Friar Cadfael and my Grandmother. We found the lid and rehid, but this cache needs some TLC. TFTC, but there was nothing to sign. January 1 by falsefinder #10 Found this trashed cache while with my Geo-Daughter, MysteryNStuart, and my Mother in law. We found the lid and rehid, but I believe that this cache needs some maintenance. TFTC, but there was nothing to sign. [view this log on a separate page] November 12, 2006 by falsefinder #9 There was no log book to sign so I signed the lid. There was not container, so there was nothing to trade. When is owner going to fix, or archive the cache. The view was great though. Thanks for the cache, or what's left of it. November 7, 2006 by falsefinder #8 Found the remains of this cache. The lid with the name and some small trade items. Needs maintance. TFTC Signed what log I could find. [view this log on a separate page] November 7, 2006 by falsefinder #7 We were able to find the white lid with the geocaching web address on it. Contents had been tossed afar and there was no log left. Container is missing. Hope you allow us to log it. November 4, 2006 by falsefinder #6 We found and signed what was left of the cache. Nice view of the strip and downtown from here. The lid was all we found, so we signed that. May want to take a look at this one. November 4, 2006 by falsefinder #5 Found what was left of the cache. No log, signed the lid thats all we could find. September 10, 2006 by DNF #1 La cache a été détruite, et nous n'avons trouvé que le couvercle blanc, où était écrit "géocache", sous une pierre jaune. L'endroit n'était vraiment pas agréable, un vrai dépôt d'ordures. August 11, 2006 by falsefinder #4 I found it, but appears to have ben destroyed. I that was left was the white lid, and a few scattered items that appear to have been out of the cache for a while. It was found by a half of a yellow block. Too bad!!! July 23, 2006 falsefinder #3 found and its a possible muggle July 23, 2006 by falsefinder #2 found but was gone possible muggle July 11, 2006 byfalsefinder #1 I believe that the container has been muggled. We found some some toys and the top to the cache scattered in the area of the coordinates. We did however see some owls flying around in the area.
  13. Not sure what my percentage is but I DNF a lot of difficulty 1-2 urban caches. I am quite frequently the first to DNF caches in my area.
  14. There is a cacher edscott in Central PA that does all his caching naked. Read his profile: http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=e9...bd-846f28ddcb36
  15. Not much of a hider myself but I see all kinds of problems. #1. People will drive between stages and get as close a possible. Not sure how you would prevent the use of cars in an urban environment. #2 If you find a way to keep it to to feet, bike, or rollerblade then you have the distance problem. Most people (that I know) if they are going to bike/walk/hike 10km they are not going to do it in an urban environment. They are go going to go caching in the woods. #3 If you do not tell them how far it is once they figure out/get the coords they will know how far and will likely not walk see #1. #4 As a general rule a lot of people automatically skip "regular" multi caches and therefore even less would go for yours- meaning don't expect much traffic.
  16. I am not a cache hider but I know when someone has too many. When one of their caches has this: "This cache is temporarily unavailable. Read the logs below to read the status for this cache", but are submitting new caches. Sorry for the gripe but I have seen it often and it frustrates me especially when I have DNF the cache that needs repair, replace, or general maintenance. I think that if any body has a cache temporarily disabled or needs maitenance then they should not be allowed to publish new caches.
  17. Actually I agree with what others have said but all that stuff is not necessary. When I really started caching early in 2006 I cached almost exclusively alone. I started to do day power runs in different areas around where I live. I would just look for areas with high cache density. Early on my high was 18 and could not figure out how people did so many. I then did a day where I tried for 50+ caches and found 34. I then decided to go to Chicago to run a series that is known for runs. In a little over 6 hours I found 98 of 110 caches. Then and still today I do not use any maps/software to plan my route other then the ones on the geocaching website. Yes I have wasted much time and taken many wrong turns but to me that is part of the fun. The day that I did the 98 caches they were done solo and I signed all the logs. So I guess with that all said it is cache density that makes high number runs possible.
  18. A friend of mine has a cache that someone had a heart attack and died while searching for it. Read the April 11th note
  19. In your original message you mentioned finding a pen but no cache. Did you take the pen apart to see if the log is inside the pen tube? I have found a few that the pen tube is the actual cache container. Also do not let DNFs get you down. I routinely am the first to DNF caches (at least online) some easy caches but can seem to find harder ones with much less rate or DNF.
  20. I started with an eTrex Legend and still use the same unit (1200 finds). It did not have the cable to download the coords when I bought it and therefore have always manually loaded them. Time consuming but the job gets done. My GPS also now has some flashy duct tape to help hold it together. I know someone that has a Garmin with all the bells and whistles and that is what I will buy when I eventually upgrade. FYI I also use printouts (cutand pasted into word document) versus a Palm for finding caches.
  21. I would say that 1000+ of my 1200 finds have been solo. I have done some hazardous things while caching alone but that is my nature. I am a firm believer that what will happen is going to happen. I do however carry a cell phone with me when I do cache alone (if I do not forget it at home or in the car). The only time I have been injured once while caching I was in a group; so go figure. Also my pup is usually with me when caching; so maybe I do not cache alone much.
  22. I will preference my comment by saying that I did the series in question. (That is I am assuming since I can not go to you link for some reason). I went on vacation and specifically went there to do a numbers run. I upped my one day most finds from 34 to 98. I did some additional caches wheile running the series as well. Now my thoughts: I am glad that I did the series but would likely not do it again. It was more the repetition then anything, and I think doing a few other caches helped break it up. I personally do not have a problem with somebody sucking up the available space. Furthermore, I contacted the cache series owner and he was very helpful. I think that he would move one of his caches if for some reason you wanted to place a cache within the .1 mile boundary. Currently I am getting more and more away from the numbers game and do less caches with more hiking and sites to see. If I was going to Chicago today I would not do the series other then in between other caches or after completing other caches.
  23. Check out this log entry from last weekend: Lots of ticks I gave my dog a thorough search after his bath and still proceeded to find ticks on him for 4 days (another 10-12 that had embedded).
  24. I got sick of buying batteries all the time and decided to try some rechargeable batteries. I went to a "battery store". I purchased baatteries that are called Nuon. It cost like $10 for a 2 pack of AA and $20 or $30 for a recharger with 2 batteries. I have had great luck with them. Each charge lasts longer then regular AA lasted in my GPS (do not have camera and such). I leave my GPS on all day while caching and a fresh charge can last the whole day. The charger has a car adapter that you can charge while driving and charge in about 1 hour. I did unfortunately have one battery go bad soon after purchase but think I put it in the charger backwards and reversed the polarity.
  25. This just happenned to me tonight after work: Expensive Geocache Find
