  1. Just and FYI as I did not see anyone else point this comment out. That sounds buried to me. As in something pointy was used to place. This type is not allowed under current guidelines. If I misunderstood the comment then just disregard. Otherwise if you don't mind what others have pointed out then go ahead and place the cache. I have wasted gas and hunted much worse caches then that one. Though I generally shy away caches in people's front yards unless clearly explained and visible from off the property.
  2. The next time you log a found it do it like 5 times. Have 4 for the day you found it and then date one for a lot earlier in the year. He will likely delete the 4 that you posted but may not notice the one that is buried in the logs. If he lets your note stay in the log try this: wait a few months and he will likely forget about it. Go back to the log and change the note to a found it. I do not think he will receive a email notification if you edit the log entry.
  3. I can't believe nobody has posted yet that you should not be reaching into any hole with your hand without checking it with something else first. I always use my hiking pole or a stick to poke in holes first. I even do the same after finding a cache. I move it around a bit with an object to get rid of any unwanted critters in advance. I once saw a snake laying on top of a cache.
  4. Personally I do not EVER feel obligated to maintain caches that I find especially if people in the past log that the log is getting full. If cache owner don't want to constantly replace the log then don't place nanos. This instance is even worse since it is in front of his house. If I wanted to replace logs and maintain cahces then I would place more of my own.
  5. They/you get "credit" under the "List of items owned" column. And to me no you don't attend your own event you host your event. Just because a cacher is "seasoned" it does no make them right or correct.
  6. Some owners have filters and/or do not look at emails that come through the website. Therefore, you did them and other cachers a disservice by not logging you DNF. What if 5 other people did the same thing as you (probably 2 or 3 did) and now there should be 6 DNFs. Don't do what others do and wait to they are absolutely sure it is not there or they search 4 or5 times before posting a DNF. In another similar log I wrote something to the effect: Do you ever find a cache and not post a found it log? Well if not then when you DO NOT FIND it when you look then log it with the same enthusiasm. I log them even if I can only search a minute or 2 (muggles, uncomfortable, etc). Why? because I looked for it and if I found it in the same amount of time I would log the smiley. I am approaching 2400 finds and have over 400 DNFs. So what? I guess I must suck at geocaching.
  7. I am not much of a hider so as a general rule I do not replace full log(book)s. I figure my duty is to find the cache and part of the owners duty is to maintain there cache. I know to most it is a courtesy to replace logs but I don't want to here crap from that one ungrateful one. I will make a temporary log (read scrap of paper) is one is soaked beyond use or not in the cache. If I find any of the above problems with a cache I post a needs maintenance (not an email to the owner because a lot do not look at them) on the cache page.
  8. My sister and I have been trying to grab DoC.A.R.T for probably a year or more when I go to visit her in the DC area. I was there this past weekend and missed again. In the span of one day it was placed, picked up, placed, and picked up. The second time it had to be picked up minutes before my sister and I got to ground zero. One problem with that one is there seems to be a PAF network and people know in advance when it is about to be placed. It actually makes it harder to get it you are not in the know. It will making grabbing it that much more rewarding once I do. I have never found a moving cache but one of the Little Known Park Finder caches passed through my area briefly last year.
  9. I have done the edge of a key on the back cover of a logbook and then rubbed dirt on it to make a sort of negative image of my name. I also etched my name into a "logbook" that was a toilet seat which the previous logs were wiping off when they got wet.
  10. Man I feel like the biggest idiot after reading the other responses. Things I have lost: 1. Someone elses geocoin (ended up buying a coin and put it in search of that cacher so they can decide its fate) 2. Retractable dog leash (a good one, now I only buy cheap ones) 3. My wallet with driver license,ATM card, credit card, and Social Security card (don't ask I don't know why it was in my wallet) 4. And an expensive almost lost was my Saturn VUE. Either the emergency brake released or some kids decided to have some fun. It rolled down a short hill and luckily on a park bench with concrete base. It got hung up on the metal post and concrete and did $1500 damage but if it was not stopped it would have been in a pond. So goes my life.
  11. Guess they don't allow you to run up the "score" like other caches do. By the way what place am I on the scoreboard?
  12. In my opinion you have done enough already if the owner knows about the situation. If the cache owner knows about the homeless in immediate area and still chooses to keep the cache there then that is his problem and not yours. Personally I would question why one would put a cache close to such population to begin with.
  13. I have major problems with people who do not log DNF and more problems with people that change DNF to notes or found its later. Instead of rambling on and on I will say this: Did you ever find a cache, sign the log, and the not log a Found It online? If not why? Because you Found It right? Then if you look and Did Not Find it then you should log it with the same enthusiasm. For what it is worth I just counted and have 428 DNF logs. The majority is when I first really started caching and would DNF a lot of caches 4 or 5 times. I'm not counting but guessing I later found about 60% of those DNFs. I had 11 DNF in one day. Man I must be a horrible cacher.
  14. The Pinnacle Cache (GCEA27). It is along the Appalachian Trail. I forget how long the hike to the cache was (4-5 miles?) and took myh pictures, enjoyed the view, checked out the nearby rock cairn and headed back toward the car. I got over a half mile back toward the car before I realized I never looked for the cache.
  15. Well finally a topic I think I can claim to be an expert on. I get PI very, very, very bad and very easily. I have had my eye almost swell shut, my face swell up (seperate ocassion) and have it so bad below my knees on both legs it was like I had PI chaps on. With that being said I have tried Benedryl, Calamine, etc, Oatmeal, Bleach, and various other things. This summer I finally broke down and bought Technu when I had gotten in it and started breaking out. It took the itch/irritation away immediately, did not weep, and went away quicker then normal. On top of that to test Technu's effectiveness (yes I am that stupid at times) I purposely got PI on me again in the same place that had broken out. Went home and used the Technu and got no new break outs of PI. I will forever be a Technu user and has made for much less miserable times. For what it is worth I did not seem to get any relief from Benedryl (topical or oral) but did have less itching with taking allergy medicine (can only take 1-3X daily on the ones I have seen) and anti-infammatories (Ibuprofen). Have not needed to take this approach since finding Technu. Worth every penny of the $6-7 per bottle.
  16. To go in a reverse azimuth you either add of subtract 180 degrees to the posted coordinates (whichever will give you a number between 0 and 360 degrees) and that degrees is your reverse azimuth bearing. To figure the distance just have you GPS on the posted (known) coordinate and walk the reverse azimuth as stated. It will count the feet for you just counting up instead of down. If for some reason that does not work you can figure out your pace count for a known distance. Simply measure out a known distance (100 feet, 100 yards, 100 meters) that is applicable to your situation. Now walk that distance counting every time you take a step or take a step with whichever foot. Then you know your pace count for that distance. Now use simple mathematics to figure out the number of steps you need to take. For example in your post it said to go 408 feet and say it takes you 33 steps to go 100 feet: Therefore you must go 33 steps 4.08 times (408/100); so 33 X4.08 = 134.64 (135) steps Hope this helps and doesn't confuse. If you were looking for caches without a GPS this is how you would find them. Find a landmark, get a bearing and distance and pace from said landmark to the cache.
  17. I will try to get back on the topic instead of banter with someone else's post. If it was in my area I would solve the puzzle and make at least one attempt at the find even though I hate micro and smaller caches in the woods. There currently is a common micro type in woods around here that are getting more and more common and I wonder if this may be that type of hide. Second, do you know any hunters? If so you may ask if they have a tree climber. It is a device to climb trees and use as a tree stand while hunting. Mine does not have any sharp edges so it does not cut into trees (they are actually not allowed to damage trees if used on game lands in PA). Third, if you have a problem with it then put it on your ignore list. Problem solved. Fourth, it's bad enough you looked and didn't post a DNF but then came in to advertise in the forums. I think it shows a little about your character.
  18. Not sure the most on one cache for me (to date I have over 300 posted DNF logs). However 2 that come to mind. One is in a rock field and has even found it to DNF logs. I have 4 DNFs on it. There is another I have 3 DNF on that is a 6 stage multi and I can not even find stage 1. Both are about a mile to get to GZ.
  19. I have very few cache hides and have not had anyone specifically write that yet. If I think I would ask them to either log there DNF or remove there Found it. Tell them that if it is not important enough to log a DNF on the cache then it shouldn't be important enough to log a Found it either. I wonder if a cache with a ALR being that you have to post a DNF and keep it logged prior to logging a Found it would be approved?
  20. I will start by saying I am not a lawyer and am only going to relay a personal experience. Also that the event took place in PA. I used to be in a car club that had an annual cruise to benefit 2 local fire companies. We were informed by the local law enforcement that raffles were illegal and that he would be stopping by the cruise to make sure tickets were not being sold. Therefore they took donations and used the raffle prizes already purchased as door prizes. For attending the cruise it was $10 to register your car but don't think you could charge admission to an event. For those that say that it is done at events that they attend. Just because they do it does not mean it is legal. Everyone talks about things that could reflect poorly upon geocaching and I think an article in a newspaper about cachers illegally gambling might reflect poorly. It would only take 1 hard nosed police officer to spoil the day.
  21. Can't resist the temptation but in the websites own description it is ambiguous: Multi-Cache (offset Cache) A multi-cache ("multiple") involves two or more locations, the final location being a physical container. There are many variations, but most multi-caches have a hint to find the second cache, and the second cache has hints to the third, and so on. An offset cache (where you go to a location and get hints to the actual cache) is considered a multi-cache. I starts by saying 2 or more locations (my interpretation = multiple locations for 1 cache). Later in the description it states it states "the second cache" (hmm that sounds like more then one to me). Personally I log every multi as one find regardless of stages. I think I have done 1 cache that the owner said to log each stage but only logged it once. I could be wrong and that could just be a caching wives tale that I heard.
  22. I will pile on for the uses for the GPS. I have the 60 CSX and over time feel it will pay for itself. I have found places to eat, directions back to a mian road, and given people direction who stopped and asked me for directions when I was not from the area. I waste a lot less gas driving in circles with turn by turn directions (it can lead you astray at times though). If you never use it for caching you can at least use it on trips to get you where you are going. Of course for the mentioned stuff you will have to get the software mentioned or something similar. If you are going to try it GPSless then also try this website: http://maps.live.com/ I sometimes find google earth blurry when looking at some areas. On google earth I could nto get a clear image once in an area that I needed for a puzzle cache and found the other site. The same area was crystal clear and found the area no problem.
  23. This is a quite ironic posting for me. Last summer/fall (?) my sister and I were doing the virtuals in DC and went for the same cache (Mile Zero) and got stopped by secret service (possibly police officer) 60 feet from the cache. President Bush was expected to be heading by the area shortly (riding in his limo) and for some reason that section of the park was off limits. The guy said we could go in as soon as the president went by and could look from a distance but not walk the additonal 60 feet. I found it ironic that I could stand right next to him and crowd him and know the president was driving by, but couldn't go see the plaque I needed to see. Still shake my head on that one. I still have not been able to get back for that cache and the one 73' away.
  24. I am glad I found this post as I was thinking of asking the same thing. I could not find any other threads. I was in the middle of logging my finds when it went down. I thought it was a problem on my end.
