  1. I have an eXplorist 600 with no cables for sale. It is barely used becuase the guy who bought it doesn't like Magellans. He bought it on vacation becuase he left his garmin at home. Replacement USB cable is available for around $31 http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/pro...asp?PRODID=1087 ($7 cheaper from many resellers). EDIT: SOLD
  2. I was glad to see that so many of the photos were from hikes and/or geocaching trips. It was comforting to know that the hobby we shared was an important one.
  3. I just heard this terrible news and I am shocked and saddened. I had the pleasure of hiking with Helmut and his wonderful family a few times and I always knew him to be a thoughtful and considerate man. I was especially fond of his ability and willingness to pick up snakes on the trail (so I wouldn't have to get near them). Rest in peace Helmut. I hope to see you again on the great trail in the sky.
  4. I first read that as "And the maid." Not sure which way is funnier.
  5. How old are your children? I'm planning to bring my son who will be 5 years old by then. Any other young children coming along?
  6. I can't provide a link due to the new enforcement of commercial posting guidelines, but if you search google for "El Diablo Hiking Staff" the first result will get you where you want to go.
  7. I placed Mini Mount Rainier (GCJ202) in memory of friend of mine who died on a rescue mission at Mt. Rainier.
  8. I posted some screenshots comparing the basemaps on the 60 and 76 here: http://www.midiresource.com/geocaching/basemap/
  9. Only one vote? That really makes it hard. I'm used to voting four or five times for most things. Hmm... HartClimbs? TeamDEMP? StayFloopy? EvilChicken? I think my vote will have to go with Squealy because I think it would look coolest on a hiking staff. Squealy
  10. You went on vacation with people who won't cache in the snow?
  11. geocaching.com logo items always seem to dissapear from caches very quickly when I leave them. (stickers, magnets, keychains, compasses, etc... http://shop.Groundspeak.com/productList.cfm?categoryID=4 ) That link violates the commercial use policy, but I'm willing to bet the admins allow it. I also like to leave/find general hiking-related stuff such as bug-wipes, flashlights, snake-bite kits, tick-removers, field guides, and maps.
  12. How do the waypoints show up on the map screen? Do they have geocache icons or some other kind? The first step is to set all the caches to the geocache icon. That is how the GPS receiver knows they are geocaches. The easiest way to get the icons right is to dowload gpx files from geocaching.com. You can also use GSAK to convert them (see more info on GSAK in other posts in this forum). If you just want to try geocaching mode without messing with new software, here are the steps to convert an already-loaded waypoint to a geocache: 1. Press the Find button. 2. Move to Waypoints and press the Enter button. 3. Move to a waypoint and press the Enter button. 4. Move to the upper left corner (the icon) and press enter. 5. Move to the closed geocache icon (2nd row, 1st column in the Outdoors section) and press the Enter button. Repeat these steps for a few more waypoints. Now that you have some geocache waypoints set, press the Find button, move to "Geocache" instead of "Waypoint" and press the Enter button. Choose the geocache you want to find and press enter, then press enter again (to select the "Go To" button). This will put the GPS receiver in geocaching mode and you will see a "Found" button, a "Note" button, and "Stop" button. Choosing the "Found" button automatically changes the icon to the "found geocache" icon and removes it from the list of geocaches to find.
  13. My reservation for site #10 was just confirmed.
  14. I got my 76cs from 4x4books.com and the price and service were great.
  15. NNJC MVC (Most Valuable Cacher): avroair. Best NNJC Cache Hider: brinasnat - Lame Roadside Cache #2 notwithstanding Best NNJC Cache Logger: stayfloopy. Those photos help me on quick lunchtime grabs. Best NNJC Significant Other: avroair. (I'm convinced Rose actually finds the caches)
  16. Badger badger badger badger.
  17. I would do my best to come. Can't make it on a Tuesday night, or the first Monday or Wednesday of the month.
  18. Just to scare people a little more: Last April, my (then three year old) son Teddy picked up two ticks. He wore three layers that morning, including a turtleneck, a long hat, and pants tucked into his socks. We found the ticks on a Friday night. He developed a small rash on Monday, so the Doctor started him on the antibiotics for Lyme Disease. Two weeks later, he was admitted to the hospital to be treated for Kawasaki Syndrome which the doctors are now starting to consider a tick-borne illness. He spent three days in the hopsital for a variety of treatments including a Gamma Globulin IV for 12-hours. Kawaski Syndrome can cause coronary damage in little kids, so he now needs to have an echocardiagram periodically to make sure there was no damage.
  19. I think he said there were "over 30" caches in Harriman. That's technically accurate. It also happens to be my age.
  20. They didn't have to. Everyone already KNOWS that!
  21. Regarding MOC, my first reaction is to say no, but I'll hear arguments from the other side if there are any. I think Members Only caches should be fair game. Are there any nearby?
  22. I'm torn. I guess I live in the Neutral Zone. When I first read about the challenge, my "side" was clear. I'm certainly more of a Northern NJ cacher than a LIer. A quarter of my finds are in Northern NJ and none are on LI. On the other hand, now that they are state flags instead of Red/Blue, I think I have to be on the NY team since I do live in NY. Or I could move to Switzerland.
  23. That was the longest drive I ever took for a broken tap.
