  1. OffRoute.com also sells the Rino 120 for $219 (you have to add it to your cart to see the discounted price). Also note that a portion of your offroute.com purchase goes to support geocaching.com when you buy with the following link (or a link off the geocaching home page): http://www.offroute.com/product/view_product.asp?x_ID=142273&CatID=14179&ref=GS
  2. I posted pics from my first hunt! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cachelog_details.asp?ID=60434&L=397448
  3. I just read the quickstart guide and manual for the Rino (no - I haven't received mine yet, but the manuals are available for download). These are the things that sold me on the Rino. 1) I love the ability to show waypoints 'by distance' instead of 'by name' - that allows me to download a bunch of waypoints and then when I get where I'm going, I can see which ones are closest to me. This may be available on other units, but I never saw it. 2) It's also possible to send a waypoint to another Rino user even if you're not at that location. (Meet me here in an hour.) 3) In addition to being able to speficy your name, you can also choose a face icon to represent you. This is displayed on the screens of other Rino's you transmit to. 4) You can tell it to scan only selected FRS channels, or all channels. 5) There are 10 ring tones, plus vibrate mode. 6) You can scramble voice transmissions so only other Rino users can hear you (not other FRS users). 7) Waypoints can be named with up to 10 characters. 8) You can select the four data fields that display on the right side of the compass screen and the seven fields on the trip computer screen. There are 36 datum to choose from (odometer, bearing, vertical speed, eta, etc...) 9) You can select which pages (and the order of pages) that are displayed when you 'cycle' through the pages. (there are 14 pages, not including the FOUR GAMES. Some of the games are multi-player games that you play agains other RIno users!) My favorite line from the manual: "Games are provided as an entertainment feature."
  4. I found an alternative CD sampler in a cache and was introduced to some new music that I really enjoyed. I think that's a cool thing to leave in a cache. It's a little more costly than what I typically leave, but since most of my CD's are on my iPod now anyway, I can part with some of them. I also usually leave a wheresgeorge.com dollar bill. I've left Kelly dolls, decks of cards, and batteries too.
  5. I am very close to buying a Rino 120, but noticed that it lacks the electronic compass and barometer that the eTrex Summit and Vista have. How important are these? I am not a climber, but I will use it a lot on my bike, so I would like to be able to see my altitude, but I don't really need it to be exact. I'll use it primarily for geocaching, but also to keep in the car so I don't get lost as often. I was told that without the electronic compass, I need to be moving to know which way is north. Does that mean I need to take a few steps, or do I really need to be moving? Thanks.
  6. While hunting for the Rocky Mountain Cache today, I came across a some pornography near the cache site. I assumed it was a coincidence until I found some more right undearneath the cache. What would you do? My first inclincation was to remove it because some kids play this game too, but then it occured to me that whoever placed it might be playing their own game. I certainly wouldn't want a non-geocacher to remove stuff that I placed! I removed it anyway, but wanted to get some opinions in case I come across that sort of thing again. (please answer not just about porn, but about other non-child friendly stuff like beer and knives)
  7. I am a Mac user and I'm lookin for a GPS to use mostly for Geocaching by foot. I would probably use it for some car navigation if it was simple enough too. Can anyone tell me what models work well with Macs (without using VPC)? (Also, if you know of a model to avoid with a Mac, that would be helpful too!) Thanks.
  8. 1. What kind of mac are you using PowerMac g4 Tower, 533mhz, 1gb RAM. 1a. are you using a keyspan usb-to-serial adapter No. 2. Operating system OS X 10.1.5 2a. Would you like a Mac OS X version YES!!! 3. What GPS Unit (brand and model #) do you have I am shopping for one now, trying to figure out what will most easily work with my Mac. 4. What features you would like to see, beyond managing waypoints, routes, and tracks The ability to install firmware upgrades would be amazing (though, I would guess an impossible feat). 5. Would you be willing to pay a nominal fee (like $5-$10)? You won't hurt my feelings if you say no, honestly. I would gladly pay $10, even more. I pay for all my shareware.
