  1. I think the acronym to which you are referring is PiTS. I saw it on one log somewhere... Anyways, the member apparently used a rating system to tell you about the difficulty of the cache. Pi = Poison Ivy T = Ticks S = ??? Anyone??
  2. We're in Conway, AR. Seems like we're kind of "cache poor" around here, although the number is increasing s-l-o-w-l-y. BTW, I think that the best way to get more caches is to get more geocachers! I'm looking for some suggestions on how we can get the word out to the community. An article ran about two weeks ago in the Conway paper about the sport, but there must be more that we can do... I've added a signature on my email client that refers to geocaching.com. Any other ideas?
  3. "Almost" always a family event for us. Rarely, we leave Lil' One (18-month-old) at home for a long hike, but usually, we choose our caches so that we can enjoy them as a family.
  4. We only needed four shirts, but we picked up some trash bags and a travel bug as well!! Thanks, Jeremy and staff, for making this great t-shirt deal available!!!!!!
  5. quote:If you download from say, your local cache list to a loc file, you can open the loc file and save it as CSV with Geobuddy. Excellent advice! One thing I would add is that since you can only download one page of caches at a time, you'll need to download all pages into separate .loc files and then combine them. I use Streets & Trips to do my mapping. Since I wanted a map of ALL the caches in the state, this is the whole process that I use: 1) Download each page into .loc files 2) Merge them all using Geobuddy 3) Save the new file as a .csv using Geobuddy 4) Import to S&T Further, I do a separate import for caches found and caches not found, so that I can use a different thumbtack icon to differentiate between them. However, this means editing the .csv files in Excel before importing. There's probably a better way to do all of this, but it works for us.
  6. The wife and I were out with our 18-month-old last weekend. In the process of moving leaves to try to find this cache, we uncovered a copperhead. Temps were still a little low for him to be very active, but we learned a valuable lesson that day... always carry a hiking stick and never use your hands to move leaves/sticks!
  7. quote: quote:-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Originally posted by Swanlakers: But what about rat poison? (or does it violate the food rule?) Swanlakers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wouldn't that be a Weapon of Mouse Destruction? Ya' got me! The first out-loud chuckle of the day!
  8. BrownMule, GeoBuddy hits the spot! I already had this program, but didn't realize you could merge files with it... Thanks for the tip! Easy, too. Just open all files you want to merge, then click the "Merge Files" button!
  9. Still a newbie here, but is there a way to combine the .LOC files after downloading from Geocaching.com? OR... (and this may be the more appropriate question) is there a way to download all caches within, let's say, 100 miles to one .LOC file? So far, I've just been able to download one page of caches at a time.
  10. Give me ambiguity or give me something else. I want to die in my sleep like my grandfather. (Not screaming and yelling like the other passengers in his car.) Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies. A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking. Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it. Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research. If you must choose between two evils, pick the one you've never tried before. Horn broken. Watch for finger. Your kid may be an honor student, but you're still an idiot. I brake for no apparent reason. Borrow money from pessimists - they don't expect it back. Learn from your parents' mistakes. Use birth control. Forget about World Peace...Visualize using your turn signal. We have enough youth, how about a fountain of Smart? He who laughs last thinks slowest. Lottery: A tax on people who are bad at math. Change is inevitable ... except from a vending machine. Time is what keeps everything from happening at once. Forget the Joneses, I keep us up with the Simpsons. The more people I meet, the more I like my dog. Laugh alone and the world thinks you're an idiot. Work is for people who don't know how to fish. I took an IQ test and the results were negative. Where there's a will, I want to be in it. Time is the best teacher. Unfortunately it kills all its students.
  11. Gaddiel because I wanted an obscure biblical name. OrangeDanish because my wife loves 'em!
  12. I have MS Streets & Trips, also. I noticed that Woodsman mentioned that he uses it for mapping. Is it true that I can load map data from there to my Legend? I thought that I had to use the MapSource software... Also, if this is the case, would the MapSource maps be more detailed?
  13. Pardon the newbie question here, but we've recently purchased an eTrex Legend and I'm wondering which MapSource CD will give me the maximum detail for my area (Arkansas). We intend to primarily use the unit for geocaching, with the occasional in-state road trip. Is there one version that's better for roads and hiking trails? I'm thinking Metroguide, but I don't really care about detailed maps outside of Arkansas... Any input would be greatly appreciated!
  14. I contacted the Arkansas Parks and Tourism Department about this very issue. They are supposed to be sending me a final draft of the directive. I'll post here as soon as I get something from them. The earlier post about the revisions to the directive are correct. The permit has been extended to 1 year.
  15. Thanks, cachecrazies, I'll do that! The cheapest price I've seen so far was at Amazon for $199. By the way, can the $50 rebate be applied even if I don't buy from Garmin? What does Garmin require to get the rebate?
  16. Check this web site: http://www.cockeyed.com/ebay/scam/scam_information.html
  17. I think this has been posted earlier in this thread, but here is a quote from Jeremy Irish on another similar thread: "Adult themed caches are considered off-limits to list on the web site. Geocaching.com considers the activity "family oriented," not "family creating." Not everyone reads the cache pages, so an "adult only" cache isn't appropriate for the sport. Besides, I'd apply the same reasoning regarding food in caches to adult toys." I agree completely.
  18. Central Arkansas here. I'm a newbie, too. In fact, I don't even own a GPS yet. We've been borrowing a friend's OLD system. Hoping to purchase a Garmin Legend this month, when the rebate goes into effect again.
  19. This is only about a mile from my house!! Unfortunately, I don't have a GPS yet... :-( Hope to purchase this month, so maybe I can find it for ya'!
  20. I don't see any problem with leaving a CD of this kind in a cache. Just be sure it's clearly labeled, so disinterested parties can just leave it there. There's nothing that says a geocacher has to take a particular item from the cache. My favorite caches are the ones that contain a variety of items. By the way, as a Christian, I love the idea of Christian material in a cache. As long as you offer other items for those that are not interested in this material, and as long as you put this information in the description, I don't see how anyone could be offended. After all, it's your cache; put what you want in there!
