  1. Leaving the batteries out for a few hours did not work. The Clearing of Memory did fix the problem. I wonder why the several times that I used Initialize, did not? This must mean that the Magellan firmware stores a correction value in the non volitile RAM and re-uses this when the GPS sends the stream down. If this value gets corrupted, it is forced to keep the bogus value until a memory clear is issued. I wonder if I could somehow clear by using the "Hidden Menu" rather than a full memory clear. Because I wiped out all my tracks and database of locations. Luckily I use "Easy GPS" to keep all the data points, and the tracks are on the SD card. I suppose this is another one of the quirks I have to live with (or figure out). And here I was thinking of getting one of the new Triton 500's.....Hmmmm.
  2. I guess I should have mentioned that I have tried Local AM/PM, Local 24HR , and the UTC instead of saying "tried all time formats". I have had this thing for more than 5 years so I am pretty knowledgeable about its operation and quirks. I also have the latest firmware (ver 5.35) for my model. I guess I could try to load the Marine firmware but I really do not think that will make a difference.
  3. I received one of those fancy watches for Christmas that syncs to the cesium beam clock signals every night. I have compared it to another one of the desk models of similar clock that I have. Which was accurate to the clock with the ball dropping on NY eve (within the television signal delay) I noticed that my Magellan Meridian (Marine) time is off by about 2.5 minutes. I have tried different time formats and it is different in all settings. Anybody notice this effect? I will re-initialize the GPS to see if that makes a difference but I was just wondering what is going on. Maybe all those Leap Seconds have added up. Forrest I just tried the initialize on the GPS...still off by about 2.5 mins. I also found that the leap seconds should only be about 14 seconds of error according to http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/gpstt.html .
  4. For some of you thinking of using a wireless webcam. You could use a small solar panel and battery combination. Disguising it would be best. It would also have to be anchored well so as to prohibit the casual thief. If you look at some of the small garden or walkway lights you'll get the idea. Forrest
  5. I wonder if you turned on the detailed tracklog option if that would make a difference. I'm kind of grabbing at straws since I'm not an expert. Forrest
  6. Sounds like this one "Treasure of the Valley" is somewhere near Fort McHenry to me. Someone might want to take a look see. Forrest
  7. Well "LDR", I do travel a few times each year. This alone is not the only reason for needing the SD memory on the meridian models. I originally thought that I would be able to use some of the internal memory of my Marine for detailed maps. I was only going to enter the detail for the state I live in. BUT you can't use the extra memory in the meridian for downloading maps. It is only for waypoints, and tracklogs. So I ended up making one region that covers part of south PA, MD, DE, VA, part of NJ and part of NC. This takes up about 60 MB. The reason I chose the Meridian Marine is because I own a boat. I also use the SD memory in 3 other devices. BTW, I got my mother to by the Sportrak and Topo pack from Sams Club. She was looking at the Garmin Vista. The point is... "to each his own" and "Whatever Floats your boat". Forrest
  8. I have the Meridian Marine. In my opinion, I think you would be happier with the Meridian. The ability to have multiple detail maps is great. I also use my 128 MB SD card in my camera, my PDA, and with an external reader as a removable hard drive on my desktop, and my laptop. I have also read that Sandisk has come out with a 512 MB SD card. The amount of data the things can hold is amazing. Forrest
  9. It looks like the game has one placed somewhere near MD. I'm bummed because my Meridian Marine is having the screen replaced because of the famous screen spots. It problably won't be back until Monday. I am going on vacation next week. I might have to borrow my moms Sport Trak to use. Hope you guys have fun while I'm away. Good Luck! Forrest
  10. Are you closing the Mapsend program before trying to eject the SD card? If not the file on the card may still be in use by the program. Make sure that no programs are using the SD card, Even Explorer can't have the directory listed. I usually left click on the C drive and then right click on the E (for me the SD is E) and choose Eject. Every once in a while even that doesn't work and I have to use the Plug and Play manager to Stop the USB mass storage device, and start over. HTH Forrest
  11. I don't know about XP, but in Win2k you have to eject the card using File Explorer before removing it from the reader or the file system can get screwed up. I think it has to do with "write caching" or mount and unmounting of drives. I think its like popping out a floppy while the activity LED is still on.

Try using the Regions, Northeast, Maryland and I bet you get more replies. [This message was edited by forresth on February 25, 2003 at 07:52 PM.]
  13. Instructions on using larger maps can be found on the Yahoo groups for Meridians. Look in the files section for a great deal of useful information. Forrest
  14. You can do a lot of customization on the startup screen and add owner info by follow instructions posted on the Yahoo group for Meridians. Look in the files section for details. The North Reference is changeable to True North by using the Menu button, choose Setup, and then choose North Reference. It is the choice at the top of the list that says "True". The lanyard for the new Meridian color will work for the others in the series. I hope this helps Forrest
  15. I have the Meridian Marine which is sort of a Gold with navaids built in. I also have a 128MB SD card. I love it.
  16. If you want to compare. I have 897 within 100 miles of my zip code. You can get to about 5 states within that 100 miles. So if you come out East try visiting Baltimore, MD or Washington, DC. Forrest
  17. I bought the Meridian Marine. I use a handheld compass if I need it. I love the unit, but I haven't had others to compare against. I found the lowest price online (www.onlinemarine.com) and then went to a trusted online source (www.cdw.com) for a price match. I had the unit in my hands in 4 days. I do wish I could find the mapping software for it cheap.
