  3. I took about 2 months off from this hobby after my initial burst of activity - and I got back into it yesterday. Today I went to one of hte new caches inmy area, and on the way back from it, noticed I was going by a cache I had entered in my GPS about 2 months ago. So I went to look for it, and found it. Went home to log the cache and found that it had been archived as missing. I emailed the owner and told him it was there. But since it's been archived nobody else will know to look for it. http://custer37.livejournal.com/ http://custer.webhop.net/

  5. quote:Originally posted by Moun10Bike:Of course, I really confused things by setting up the first 70 geocoins as Travel Bugs How did you do this? Your coins seem to appear on the site and track just like the dog tag travel bugs - but they are obviously something completely different. I figure either you were given 70 Tbug serial numbers to use on your coins (as they are indeed rather nice) or you bought 70 travel bugs and had the travel bug numbers imprinted on your coins to function instead of the original tag. Expensive, but the only way I can think of that it could be done without some sort of special permission from the site administrators. I bought an 8 pack of the official tag type bugs which is what I will be using myself - but I was surprised to see your coins tracked just liek regular travl bugs when there is no published way to accomplish this. 6. quote:Two files are there in *.pub format: travbug_generic.pub is the main form travbuginstr.pub is the instruction sheet My plan is to print these out in color on post card paper and have them laminated, then attach to the TB. Wonderful idea - but I don't have microsoft publisher. If they were perhaps in MS Word format I could use them. RTF format and anybody could use them. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  7. quote:Originally posted by CR: We could start a travel bug in every cache campaign. Every time you place a new cache you also put a travel bug in the cache. I did that - though I ran into a "bug" of my own - I could not show the bug as actually being in it until the cache was approved. It did work though - three people went for it the first Saturday it wsa available. Fortunately, the first person there took the travel bug, because by the time the third person went to look, the entire cache was already gone. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  8. We have a cache site here in Santa Clarita that was placed by a charter member over a year ago. The person who did the placing has placed three other caches, but all of them are hundreds of miles apart, so I get the feeling they are not being maintained. The person who placed them was very acive in geocaching until November of last year when they suddenly ceased activity completely. The iste is listed as active, not unavailable. Naturally only the owner of the cache or a site admin can do anything about that. File people have since gone looking for the cache and left sad log entries about it. The site is abandoned, the cacher is inactive, what now? http://custer37.livejournal.com/

  12. In the grand total of TEN DAYS that I have been involved in this hobby / game / sport I have already had a cache stolen. I was actually unaware that a non-logged in user could see the coordinates. As a result I mentioned plundered caches to someone unrelated to the hobby - and was asked in turn if anyone had had their cache's swapped out instead of stolen - with a container of child pornography, poisonous material or even a bomb. As you might imagine, I was talking to a lawyer at the time, about how product liability had taken two other hobbies of mine, general aviation and skydiving, out of my price range. He was surprised this had not yet happened - and amazed nobody had even thought about it - though I'm pretty sure someone at least has. At the time I told him you did have to be a registered and logged in member to see where things had been hidden - if I now go back and tell him that completely anonymous and unidentified people can get the cache coordinates, he will probably get the steriotypical "dollar signs in his eyes" look.... http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  13. quote:Originally posted by Dekaner: Now that's what I want!! - Dekaner of Team KKF2A Me too! Why is it that I never get a headless toy soldier? Only one I found so far was a plastic army man left by "Liberty Lover" - who wrote his geoname on thebottom - around where it says "made in China". I was wondering if I should point out the toy soldier is carrying an SKS (Chinese rifle)... http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  14. quote:Originally posted by BluEyz and Bugsy: Nice idea! I see that you are ready to order, but I do have a question. If you print all the chips the same, won't they be less collectible then they would be if they were all different? Could the back be left blank so that the name of the cache or the coordinates could be added as they are placed in caches? Get yourself a type of pen called a "sharpie". It writes on anything. Even poker chips - I had one from Vegas lying around and I just tried. It worked. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  15. quote:Originally posted by Couch_Potato:We're mainly doing this for fun, but if you want to help you can fill out a http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/FORMS_PROCESSING-cgi-bin/recvy_entry_www.prl. I've found several markers and have filled out a recovery for some of them. It sounds like a form to fill out of you physically "recovered" the benchmark from it's intended location (?) though that can't be. They shoudl call that a "condition report" or something. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  16. A provision for destroyed benchmarks is already on the site - just list them as "unavailable". First one I went to [EW7354] was only 0.26 miles from my house. Unfortunately someone else's house now sits on that spot - apparently the benchmark was bulldozed in 1979 along with everything else around here. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  17. But I'm going to stick to benchmarks for awhile. Don't have the fun of trading stuff but I won't step on any toes that way. Besides, there are at least 50 of them within 5 miles of my house. Already found 2, but they don't show on my page as finds even though I put in logs for them. Probably too new a feature I suppose. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  18. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: Because the owner has archived the cache, therefore abandoning the location, feel free to create your own cache page for the location or a location very close by ... I am rather going to set this whole hobby aside for awhile. I turned to it for fun and now I'm getting hate mail from "dredpirateroberts" so I will find other things to do with my spare time. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  19. I thought it was a good deed to just do this... Now to be fair, the owner of the cache had stated they did not intend to replace it themselves as they thought it would just be plundered again. However someone before me had ALSO replaced it after it had been plundered, and the cache owner had nothing but praise for them. It was noted as lost again, so I also made a trip to replace it with somethign I thought would last. I got a rather unpleasant email from the person who originally placed the cache, after which he archived it. I didn't even show as having credit for finding it anymore. They had not edited the cache to make it a virtual one, though apparently it was their intent. If it had been formally changed to virtual I would have left it alone - if it had been archived I never would have seen it. As it was I drove 20 miles to do a good deed and got feedback quite a bit different from what I thought I would. http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  20. I went to the cache I thought I was going to be too close to today to get a feel for things. "Bubbling Crude" Is over a thousand feet up the side of a mountain. I gave up after going 200 ft up on the first try. I'm planning to go down the other fork of the trail and put mine in a little cave I see about 20 feet up a hill off the trail. Much easier to get to. A long hike, but a different skill level available for people who don't have the abilities of the person who says he rode a bicycle up there (?!?!?!) http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  21. I saw a thread earlier regarding "cache saturation". I wanted to put one in a canyon near here - but there is already another one ("bubbling crude") that is only 2 miles from where I want to put mine. Now, that 2 miles includes a 4,200 Ft tall mountain, so it would take you several hours to get from one to the other, but is this considered to be too close? http://custer37.livejournal.com/
  22. How is "moun10bike" getting activation codes for his own coins then? They apparently are treated by this site as official bugs.
