I took about 2 months off from this hobby after my initial burst of activity - and I got back into it yesterday. Today I went to one of hte new caches inmy area, and on the way back from it, noticed I was going by a cache I had entered in my GPS about 2 months ago. So I went to look for it, and found it. Went home to log the cache and found that it had been archived as missing. I emailed the owner and told him it was there. We have a cache site here in Santa Clarita that was placed by a charter member over a year ago. The person who did the placing has placed three other caches, but all of them are hundreds of miles apart, so I get the feeling they are not being maintained. The person who placed them was very acive in geocaching until November of last year when they suddenly ceased activity completely. The iste is listed as active, not unavailable. Naturally only the owner of the cache or a site admin can do anything about that. File people have since gone looking for the cache and left sad log entries about it. In the grand total of TEN DAYS that I have been involved in this hobby / game / sport I have already had a cache stolen. I was actually unaware that a non-logged in user could see the coordinates. As a result I mentioned plundered caches to someone unrelated to the hobby - and was asked in turn if anyone had had their cache's swapped out instead of stolen - with a container of child pornography, poisonous material or even a bomb. As you might imagine, I was talking to a lawyer at the time, about how product liability had taken two other hobbies of mine, general aviation and skydiving, out of my price range. He was surprised this had not yet happened - and amazed nobody had even thought about it - though I'm pretty sure someone at least has. A provision for destroyed benchmarks is already on the site - just list them as "unavailable". First one I went to [EW7354] was only 0.26 miles from my house. Unfortunately someone else's house now sits on that spot - apparently the benchmark was bulldozed in 1979 along with everything else around here. http://custer37.livejournal.com/

But I'm going to stick to benchmarks for awhile. Don't have the fun of trading stuff but I won't step on any toes that way. Besides, there are at least 50 of them within 5 miles of my house. I thought it was a good deed to just do this... Now to be fair, the owner of the cache had stated they did not intend to replace it themselves as they thought it would just be plundered again. However someone before me had ALSO replaced it after it had been plundered, and the cache owner had nothing but praise for them. It was noted as lost again, so I also made a trip to replace it with somethign I thought would last. I got a rather unpleasant email from the person who originally placed the cache, after which he archived it. I didn't even show as having credit for finding it anymore. They had not edited the cache to make it a virtual one, though apparently it was their intent. If it had been formally changed to virtual I would have left it alone - if it had been archived I never would have seen it. As it was I drove 20 miles to do a good deed and got feedback quite a bit different from what I thought I would. http://custer37.livejournal.com/

I went to the cache I thought I was going to be too close to today to get a feel for things. "Bubbling Crude" Is over a thousand feet up the side of a mountain. I gave up after going 200 ft up on the first try. I'm planning to go down the other fork of the trail and put mine in a little cave I see about 20 feet up a hill off the trail. Much easier to get to. A long hike, but a different skill level available for people who don't have the abilities of the person who says he rode a bicycle up there (?!?!?!) http://custer37.livejournal.com/

I saw a thread earlier regarding "cache saturation". I wanted to put one in a canyon near here - but there is already another one ("bubbling crude") that is only 2 miles from where I want to put mine. Now, that 2 miles includes a 4,200 Ft tall mountain, so it would take you several hours to get from one to the other, but is this considered to be too close? http://custer37.livejournal.com/
