  1. Mine came today. Its my first geocoin and I must admit I was quite surprised that the traveling coin was so small. Learn something new every day
  2. For anyone who started 2010 or later, it was "TFTC" or "Found it". I can work that peeve into just about any thread, can't I? Just kidding, of course the log I'm quoting is from a guy who started last year. This has come up before, and I'm kind of embarrassed with my first log, because I corrected the poor guy for naming his cache after the wrong abandoned RR, and named it after another one a few miles up the road. Someone could look it up in my profile if they're really interested. One thing I notice looking it over again, I had read up on Geocaching for a couple weeks, and didn't actually create the account until the day I found the first cache; I actually used the word "muggle" in my log. Interesting too that FiremanFIFL knew what FTF was in his first log. I too did a bunch of reading before I started, only because I was waiting for my GPS to arrive
  3. GC43FMA 01/05/2013 Thanks for the hide. I was very excited to be FTF on my very first cache. Really glad I got the email about it being published right before I left the house on todays adventure
  4. I live in the middle of now where, most new caches I get emails on are listed 17-20 miles away, PnG's off of a major highway. With a lack of a direct route it makes for about a 30 minute 1 way trip, not worth it for me. Granted if they they got published a little earlier I would hit them on my way home from work. One did get published about 3 miles away a couple of weeks ago as I was making dinner, I believe the big football game bought me the time I needed to finish eating and still grab the FTF about 45mins later
  5. Well I didn't get a 'sorry message' so that might be good news for me.
  6. My caching is rarely planned, I do quite a bit of random traveling so I have 3000 caches laded into my GPSr, I do update them occasionally to make sure they are still good. And I do have the phone app to check recent logs also
  7. I am just glad to know I am not the only person having this issue, with the SCUBA attribute also. And they're not part of a series that will require it either.
  8. Haven't hit a LPC yet, but have been getting a lot of road signs. The thrill of the find right now comes from being able to recover in the deep snow. I also found a bunch of series that give clues for a final puzzle cache to keep it a little more interesting.
  9. As A fellow newbie all I can say is keep trying. I have been having similar issues, we recently got 2 feet of snow and a lot of the caches are not easily accessible. Personally I have been searching for Park and grabs, as they are usually winter mostly winter friendly and caches that have been found fairly recently. Keep looking around the guardrail, I found a couple of neat ones like that
  10. Just starting out and pretty much doing Park and grabs, but this is what I make sure I have along. Cellphone, GPSr, Extra batteries, small flash light, HUGE Flashlight, 2 gels pens, small notebook, a few swag items, microfiber towel, couple of multi-tools, and gloves. With the exception of the HUGE Flashlight(Dive Lantern) I can fit these all in pockets and grab what I need to when I get out of the car. Things I plan to add very soon; Duct tape, baggies, some hooks, mirror, log sheets, magnets. I will be moving this stuff to my camelbak when the spring rolls around and I start doing some hikes.
  11. Keep asking questions and you'll keep getting answers
  12. After a few days out with my Oregon 450 I will completely recommend it, couldn't see caching without it. about 10 hours use and the battery meter just hit half! As for winter I bet there are plenty of caches you can still hit in NYC in the snow. I do know your sorrow though, Sunday I drove upto many caches that I knew were right there, but buried under 2' of heavy wet snow
  13. Sweet, I was a little worried it wouldn't work as I actually just registered my GPS on Garmin's website 2 hours ago
  14. The ones I find awkward to do are the roadside finds on busier highways. There is a neat series based around my area, but all the caches are on heavily traveled highways. Granted I could do drive-bys and not sign logs for the 6 clue caches, just get numbers off the signs. I have considered grabbing more at night, but then you look even more suspicious monkeying around with signs.
  15. Try search for 1/1s with a larger size. Might be easier to figure out the hide and will probably contain more trade-ables which will really get your son excited. I spent the day chasing road signs. While really fun at first, especially being first to find on my first cache, just signing log books along the road does loose a little excitement. Happy hunting from a fellow newbie!
  16. Got my Oregon 450 yesterday and completely love it. Took a little bit to tweak settings a few setting and figure out the automotive navigation. O verall I couldn't be happier, but what am I doing here I need to get out caching
  17. I just got a smoking deal on an Oregon 450 from gpscity.com for $200 Decent size touch screen and waterproof 10' for 30 mins. Not sure how long it will be on sale, but I think its worth looking into
