  1. Nice site. Wish you could share (FB etc) the maps / stats with someone else.
  2. With you both. I quite enjoyed the early adopting of Garmin GPSr units, as garmin used to be responsive with each unit... but with each new model the software team faded earlier and earlier..and left each unit more and more unfinished. I have a Montana 650t, enjoy it, but I wish it got more love! Too used to the large screen to get this Oregon refresh, but it looks like a nice unit.
  3. As the caches are right next to the car..exactly.
  4. If they don't follow the newer Guidelines they wouldn't get published by the local Reviewer.
  5. I love it. Use it daily. Clyde rocks.
  6. Yup, Holy Wastewater. I'm still recovering from the experience, http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=1f516405-2a61-4f3d-8dbc-83c8a2e27208 .
  7. Did a 100 day one for a local Challenge, but becoming tempted again to try for a 366 day one. Not sure if i have the patience again!
  8. Some would claim that 1000 film cans "hidden" every 528' along a road is silly, but as long as people get a smiley face for "finding" each of them, those that find them aren't going to complain. I'm not convinced waymarks, even with some site improvements, would be successful if finds didn't count towards ones find total. If some sort of virtual did come back (even though TPTB have claim that they won't), the only way they're going be successful is if they use the same processes, general guidelines, and other site features that are used for other cache types, and that includes counting it as a find. Agreed.
  9. Waymarking was a good idea, and (IIRC) the main issue at the time was that the finds DIDN'T count towards your find total, and so I think that the main audience of this site, geocachers, just didn't really get interested. The polar opposite were Challenges, which did count towards your finds in their initial iteration... but the first published Challenges were quite silly and unregulated so folks just well, laughed. So do we need a happy medium between those two? Not sure what that is yet. Groundpseak need to focus on geocachers as their core audience. I like the Waymarking functionality but I think it goes beyond just integration or design (I actually quite like the Web2.0ish white space) and is still far away from being that happy medium to be the replacement for Virtuals ... do you really want a "find" based on seeing a McDonalds store? I'm not keen on bringing virtuals back as they were before (unfettered) or after the wow-factor phase but it is clear that themed virtual locations CAN work with review, as with earthcaches with their Geology Society theme and a dedicated set of Reviewers. Maybe designate some of the Waymarking categories as "wow" categories in which a Waymarking find does count as a caching find. The Waymarking category team is the "Reviewer". This allows for bulk "wow factor" review by Groundspeak rather than every single dang new Virtual being reviewed for "wow"ness. If not use the actual Waymarking site, shoehorn these new categories into the main site with a generic "WOW SITE" geocache icon
  10. Nice idea. The logbook makes the cache legit, not a camera. A full camera is not going to make the cache obsolete. With regard to the placement, you can always make a cache listing, submit and ask your local Reviewer to check the location but not actually publish it until you are ready to do so. Assuming the location checks out OK, let your folks find it, then enable and ask the Reviewer to publish. Be aware that you might get some local FTF hounds complain about that, as Mrs B alluded to. I'd just ask to get it publish, wait until the FTFers find, then tell your folks to log it... or just ignore the local FTFers
  11. I did a 100 day streak for a Challenge, and that was ENOUGH. I enjoyed the challenge of having to find one, but it became a little tedious. I always used to try and keep ten miles close to home clear, so that didn't help with the streak. I think I ended up driving "home from work" about 20 miles about my way at times heh
  12. +1 .. I think that's the best one. And a great one to get ideas from!
  13. Agreed, forged many strong friendships through caching over the decade or so, and there are only one or two folks I can think of who are pretty unpleasant. It's usually those who over-think and swear up and down there are "cliques" and get into a lather about that. The other phenotype are people who have burnt out from caching for ages and get grumpy in general. Cachers are a good crowd, and I've met many folks there is NO WAY I would have met any other way. it does tend to attract a real mix of people, who are nice.
  14. The problem with any "governing body" are that usually the "my way = only way" types get in charge and push their own agenda. And anyway, if Snoogans if offering flagellation, I'm in.
  15. -- you can buy a DVD CN from the store and you get a free single update online (big download!)from garmin to bring it to the newest version. (2013.1?)
  16. Yeh, its not a very good two way blocker unlike Facebook...which also has some workarounds. And I imagine that the temptation just to see what they have posted might be too great.

  18. Nice post, showing the diversity of what cachers like. This sounded like one of those Character Profile Quizzes with multiple choice questions. Aww, it isn't. Probably hybrid based on the OP...I like everything. Experienced power trails, long hikes, boat, underground etc etc. I think I like Challenge caches as a good personal goal setter and for trip planning over the last few years (Delorme, County, streaks, D/T, Greatest Hits, State Capitol etc etc) which has made for a huge variety. A thing less mentioned above is the social aspect (with or without associated event caches) which is my main reason to cache. My family likes to cache, I have a large set of friends that cache individually or as a group, so its a good dovetail with social life. I also like the community building aspect, and the interactions with muggle land managers / agencies, and have used the social side as an icebreaker multiple times for a couple of adult and teen support groups. So a Social Hybrid (SH) Cacher?
