  1. Yes but is it under pine wood, did you get a clear view of the sky ? I am not familiar with the Taunus area. As there is no foliage currently, reception in a harwood forest is better. As for the US basemap, I am a bit puzzled, this German store sold you the US model not the EU model. I agree the EU basemap may not be very detailed but better than nothing. Is it an official GArminl dealer ? What about the warranty and service ?
  2. Good review ! I see this store sells the 60CX for 449€, which is the first decent price I have seen in Europe (although way more expensive than the US version but helas, so much tax to pay !). I suppose it is the EU version with all the standard accessories and international warranty ? Is the basemap enough for route travel in Europe, at least the main road ? The bugs you noticed have also been pinpointed in this forum. Did you try it in heavy wooded area. Not much foliage this time of year but what about pine forest during a misty day ? Personaly I don't mind about the compass, a good sandard one fits the bill and can save battery life of the GPS. Living in France, I am intersted to get one but think I will hold my breath a month or two to let Garmin fix these bugs. Hope it can be fixed by just a firmare update !
  3. Not sure which country you are in but you might want to pose this question in one of the European forums, like the UK. They are going to be more people there who have had to deal with the same issue. Good Luck! I am living in the North Korea of Europe, that is France ! I have seen US cutomer, in fact the majority, buying these GPS from eBay vendors, so I was hoping to get some feedback about the warranty they were getting.
  4. I am looking to buy the Garmin 60CX but I am living in Europe. The prices here is simply horrendous, twice the cost in the US ! I would accept to pay a bit more say 1 Euro for 1 Buck as for other stuff like digital camera and the like but for this GPS its twice the US cost. I know the basemap are different but I don't care as anyway the level of details requires you to get Ciy Navigator or at least MetroGuide. My concern is about warranty and future service, does Garmin offers an international warranty and service. Also, some vendors sell on Ebay at competitive price but where do they get these GPS and how can they offer them at such a price ? Grey market some say, yes but how ? Stolen goods, goods "lost" at the factory ? How do we recognize a "grey" market product if they claim it is in factory sealed box ? Are the serial numbers logged at Garmin so they know the product is "grey" one ? On the 60CX is there a special tag bearing the serial number and where is it located ? (I know all these have the SN burned in the harware too) Thanks
  5. What I want is to load these POI (speed radar) .GPX and keep all the other waypoints, routes etc... I already have loaded from a saved .gdb file ! The POI file I load (.GPX) destroy the previous informations.
  6. OK but my problem is to load all of them plus the .gdp file on Mapsource Metroguide maps on my PC so to to plan the trip.
  7. Yup, reading all your reports, I am holding my 60CX purchase till all is fixed. Indeed how can we be sure it will be fixed by just a firmware update ? True, software is usualy the cause. Having worked in the software after the hardware, I noticed a total lack of quality control in the former as programmers assuming it's easy to update, tend to be lousy ! May be they will end up loading the firmware update directly from the GPS sattelites !
  8. Thanks, it is the kind of soft I was looking for. True they appear as Waypoints when loaded in MapSource. How by the way, can we in Mapsource add these to existing ones as the loading of the .gpx file overdied the previous ones ?
  9. Bringing back this post as I haven't yet found a soft to do it. Funny thins the Garmin POI files are csv file with the Long then Lat in signed DDD.DDDDDD followed by a pictogram. It is supposed to be loaded to the GPS with their soft POILoader but don't see any wya to load the POI on the PCs Mapsource as waypoints ? Anyone got an idea ?
  10. If you want to have a lot of fun, better express it as MMM YYYY F II fractional ! I mean, M for mile, Y for Yards, FF for feet II for inch and than fraction of inch afterwards !!! When I was hunting in Maine, before the GPS, I was quicker to determine distances etc on 24K topo map using a ruler in cm so 1cm is 240 meters than my friend fumbling with inhces equal aprrox to that many miles or so ! Not to mention the 1/100 000 scale which is standard the world over. Even heard that the mile used for surveying is not quite the same as the mile derived from the inch (5280 X 12) standardised in 1890 as 25.4mm excactly because before it wasn't exactly 25.4mm !
  11. Anyone knows of a soft to load on the PC based Mapsource, POI list in CSV format ? Garmin uses this excel format for POI lists like radar detectors, they also offer POILoader to load it on the GPS but how about loading it to MetroGuide for ex to have them displayed on the maps on the PC ? Thanks.
  12. With the scale, 1/24000 one cm equals 240m on a printed map but how important is it on a computer screen or GPS ? Do these computerised US TOPO map allow rescaling to standard scale like 1/25000 for printing and can we change the displayed unit to be standard ? Or are they simply scanned regular topos ?
  13. In a 60cs (should be the same for the X model?) go menu->menu->setup->units. Halfway down there is a setting to change Distance/speed. Change it from Statute to Yards. I don't know however, at what distance it will begin to display in miles. edited to add: It appears it switches from yards to tenths of miles when you get to 1000 yards. Huh, 1000 Yard is it a KiloYard ?
  14. Sorry but even at aspidshop, the price is way higher than in the US and the VAT IS included in the price (21%) ! I plan to buy it in the US and of course not to pay the EU tax as they are horrendous (21% compared to the 6% US sale tax !) Same for City Navigator EU, cheaper in the US, so !
  15. I plan to do the same, buy the US version, a lot cheaper and use it in EU. Problem we don't see many selling EU City Navigator !!! Garmin should better produce a standard GPS without any base map as anyway we need to load a better one. What is the difference between City Navigator and City select ? Looks confusing to me, some site says NAvigator is repalcing Select ? Also, if we load the US Maps and Topo maps does the GPS set up for metric unit dipsplays all the value in metric (distance, elevations etc...) on the maps ? Feet for elevation, distance in feet then in quarter mile or mile, strange topo scale of 24000 you can't use easily all this so confusing you need a GPS not to get lost !
  16. By the way on these US 24K Topo maps does the units displayed on the Garmin change to standard metric if the Garmin is set to metric ? How come these maps do not come with standard scales, 1/100000, 1/25000 etc... like everywhere else ?
  17. The US version comes preloaded with NA maps and the EU with Europe maps, fine but how do these built in maps compare to the maps sold separatly City Select and navigator for NA and EU ? And what are the differences between City Select and Navigator ? Tahy are abut the same price when available (City Select has not price shown on Garmin site ???) In other words do we get the same "unit" with a 60CX US loaded with City Select EU (or NAvigator, can't see the differences !) as a 60CX EU loaded with City Select /Navigator US ??? I am asking as I wonder what is the best set up to travel in Europe, money wise, get a 60CX US and load it with City Selct EU or just a 60CX EU version ? Thanks for you great site, by the way. PS: I think Garmin would have made things simpler by not having a built in map at all, just a standard unit you load with the appropriate maps. Maps are changing over time no ?
