  1. Turtle 3863 might be able to answer better, being local - I remember there being a lot of stairs, the terraine would maybe rate 3 stars because elevation change and the path is rough in places. The highlights of this tour are all the formations you get to see. The tour description has the details.
  2. Cave Tours It's only $46 for the day long wild cave tours - which I have heard is fantastic, but this is a real spelunking experience - you visit 4 of the 5 levels of the cave in the process. Most of the other tours are not technically challenging (basically a hike underground) and visit just a fraction of the 360+ miles of cave in the system and range between $4 and $21 depending on the length and the equipment needed - the lantern tours are nostalgic - but a lot of the public parts of the cave are wired. The Grand Avenue is the longest tour, but my favorite was the Frozen Niagra tour. I know I sound like I'm really selling the tours but my experience there is different than the general publics - worked there for 10 days on an EarthWatch Project. While there, they took us on several of the tours during the days, since we worked in the cave after hours. Advice during the tour, dress for the fact that it is a constant 56 degrees F underground! Also, taking the ferry across the Green River is a rare experience too -not many of this type of ferry in operation . This is free of charge.
  3. Ghosts & Goblins is a virtual in Mammoth Cave NP and it has a great story behind it. You really should hear the whole story, not just go to the cache site and grab the answers. The waypoint is GC843A. Looking at nearest to that waypoint list, there seem to be quite a few more actually in the park than there were last year. One of the cave guides I worked with is a cacher, but I don't think he set any of these up. I was there last summer and did a some in Bowling Green and in the surrounding areas. BTW, there are at least 2 benchmarks actually in the cave system - a little known factoid. It a great area, hope you enjoy your visit.
  4. 41 so far - hoping to finish most of the lower 48 this summer. Then the new goal - not to appear to be just a tourist! I like the category option - thanks for sharing the site. I'm going to change the map on my profile. I track my finds in a GSAK data base labeled Found_Stats, and can then sort by state.
  5. I got a pair of Keen Newport and I love them - especially the toe protection. I actually wear them more for school (standing all day) but I bought them to be water shoes/light trail walkers for caching this summer. I have a bad ankle, and poison ivy just loves me , so for longer hikes I'll stick to the over the ankle boots.
  6. Just call me blinky from now on. While heading for the first cache on 12/28/04 walked into a pricker branch at eye level. I now have a reference point for the phrase, "Better than a sharp stick in the eye". Yes, everything is better than a shape stick in the eye! Still kept caching even though I would stop every couple of minutes with stabbing pain and blinding flood of tears...and HDIGH asking if I wanted to go to the doctor. Once it stopped hurting, I could see just fine. Finally gave in (after 4 caches in this condition) and used the Atomic Betty (Garmin's PDA thingy) to get directions to the local hospital. Spent 2hrs at the emergency room for ..... and then did 5 more caches once I could keep the eye open. Yep we're over the top.
  7. when you have more dead batteries than good one on the floor of your back seat..... when you have several toys on your dashboard, just waiting for the TB tags to come in the mail..... when you are thinking about buying a storage container so that you can have multiple cans of spray paint available for customizing cache containers...... when you ask noncaching family members to save all sorts of containers that could be cache containers....... when you can give the requirements for more than 5 locationless caches.......
  8. Closest 20 unfound(0.4 to 4.1 mi) 1st 7 are micros then a puzzle micro multi multi reg - just haven't had the time to do yet.... reg - tried but need to try again..... another puzzle 2 more micros multi another micro A JackCacheNC multi that I really want to do ONCE IT FINALLY STOPS RAINING - yet another micro another multi and another micro! Guess if I'm going to hunt by myself - I want a box at the end of the trail! BTW - Closest 20 - 1.5 miles (found 18/20...but if you were to look at Nashville or Lancaster, you might think I lived there too.....oh wait those were mostly icros, ........oh yeah, those were fun hunts with groups of ppl - swarm, swarm....)
  9. Glad to read a happy story - it was a hoot to read all 4 pages. In my area, David&Diana cached while dating and then cached on their honeymoon. Otherwise there seems to be mostly MM caching solo or young families - nothing wrong with that, lol, but what's a single gal to do (guess it didn't help that for the first 800 my nickname made me sound like the 3 drawf that no one admitted existed) ..... In my caching experience - I've met probably a dozen other cachers at non-event caches/non-group hunt fellow cachers.......guess that works out to about 1 cacher per 100 caches.
  10. Which one did you try - there are a couple in your area that I have tried and tried and still haven't found - but I haven't given up on ..... yet. When you go back 3 times to find one - then it is an obsession! Most times the cache area doesn't quite look natural, - look for oddly stacked sticks, piles of leaves where everything else is flat or hollow logs or stumps that have a lot a debris on top. Other common spots are under fallen trees or in the rootballs of fallen trees. Also remember that your GPS has an accuracy, based on number of satellites it can "see" at the time. So did the cacher's GPS who hide it. This leads to what some call the drunken bee dance - wandering around in circles trying to follow the arrow on the GPS screen without walking into objects. Often I have found caches where my GPS is reading upto 30 or 40 feet off, but I've found some further off than that - I even found a benchmark once that was off by 300 ft! Happy hunting If it weren't for geology, you'd have nothing to stand on.
  11. Does anyone have experience with this model. My dad was asking about it, sale price it is in the range of the Etrex Legend (without the rebate). Was just wondering pros/cons of this model. My experience is with the yellow Etrex -so was especially looking for comments from fellow cachers who might have used both. Advertized as being excellent under tree cover -was wondering if this was true? Let me know positive or negative and I'll pass on your advice. Thanks. If it weren't for geology, you'd have nothing to stand on.
  12. There are atleast 2 caches in NC that are specifically designed for night-time caching. They are in parks that don't close until 11pm due to ball field use. The cache owner rldill has done an awesome job setting these up. I've done Lost in the Dark and am looking forward to NightLife. If it weren't for geology, you'd have nothing to stand on.
  13. Barring another snow storm this far south (and east) I maybe able to help you out this coming weekend. I'll watch to see if you get any other offers and will contact you again closer to my trip east. If it weren't for geology, you'd have nothing to stand on.
  14. That's nothing, check out the glow at these coords N35 47.207 W 078 50.270. Plus if you have spare change, they'll donate it for you - stop long enough to read their sign. BTW: Wouldn't it be cool if other cachers posted their favorite or local Griswold's coords....
  15. - One way to ruin the sport???? I know it is only trinkets, but I would be less likely to cache if the contents might not be there. Or as the *ransom* note asks, perhaps I don't *Get it?*. Please fill me in as to why *GeoGod* would take the entire contents of a cache and leave a paste-up note talking about losers, being geo-slammed, and the relocation of the contents to another location. Is it just me, or is this a bad idea that should be discouraged? If it weren't for geology, you'd have nothing to stand on.
  16. Lots of viewing but not many posts....Isn't it time for another beer session - I mean restaraunt meeting? I can post coords for one of many fine establishments in downtown Raleigh - it could be a late version of Oktoberfest during the last week of the month, if there's interest. If it weren't for geology, you'd have nothing to stand on.
  17. Dang... Just when I had laid out my plans to get into the top 50 in atleast 3 states by the end of 2002 - For CT that just 15 and RI just 7 finds, that should take just about take-up Thanksgiving break But now I got to worry about staying in the top 5 for RDU..... I may have to stop sleeping so that I can keep up my professional ranking If it weren't for geology, you'd have nothing to stand on.
  18. First - Deadite no offense intended quote:Geez... Why make this team play stuff involve 100th finds..... I just meant that I would need help if I was going to stay out of the principal office for being late returning to school Second - Team play outside of Raleigh, even better. Late October sound good - count me as part of the Raleigh horde. Who could recognize a fake rock faster than a geologist Perhaps I could fashion a few native rocks for the Raleigh challange.....

  20. 28th sounds fine - Is this to be a hunt, a meal or both?
  21. There a couple of long weekends coming up, which would give me more time to get out of the woods and back to the classroom [] I've already been told by my teaching team that if I miss a day because of caching they'll take away my GPS until next June! or worse....give me lunch detention.

  23. I was wondering the same. Would like to meet other Geocachers in the area. Count me in for local meetings/events. Was considering going to the CHarlotte 6/20 or Greensboro 6/23 meeting just to see what a meeting entails.
