  1. Thanks to all who recommended mac caching - you can sync a PQ as contacts in your address book or export descriptions and logs as notes. Like my Mac, it just works:)
  2. I was reading about downloading the cache info onto an iPod - just like you would to a Palm - I saw many posts about adding it to this drive or that in a PC. I just wondered if anyone had a native solution. If you could enter text with the click wheel and sync it back that would be awesome - but really all I'm after is syncing my PQs to my iPod in some way (without a PC).
  3. i dont know if this is possible, ask the commies at apple about them letting your computer do that. Come on - the iPod is Native to the Mac. I love my Mac - you know what PC stands for don't you?
  4. I have been reading about sending PQ's to your iPod - all of the posts I can find are dealing with it from a PC. Does anyone know how to do this on a Mac? It seems like there should be a simple way - any help would be appreciated.
  5. I just upgraded to a Colorado last month. I think that after reading all the posts about bugs and deficiencies I can kind of sort it out. The firmware update seems to have corrected or improve most of the bugs or concerns. The other things that most people talk about are specific features of their old unit that are not available on the Colorado. The Colorado is a different platform and is light years ahead of my old Explorist. I love going paperless. 3-D view us awesome. Loading caches has never been simpler. I use this unit almost every day exploring and hiking. I wish it had backtrack but other than that I'm very happy.
  6. I put this on an SD card. Do you have to select it? It doesn't show up.
  7. I am a Mac user. My first GPSr was a Magellan 400 Explorist. The sales rep assured me it was Mac compatible. It was not. After having to rely on a friend to convert and load caches I decided to look for something compatible with my system. I have 2 Garmin units. Both are color. It makes a huge difference hiking. Both are high sensitivity too. I get satellite lock inside my house, so the woods are cake. The best part is that it is so simple to load caches. No conversion - just click "send to GPS" - my Mac works more simply than the Explorist on a PC.
  8. I have a Rino and City Navigator. It works great.
  9. I bought a Crossover thinking it would be the perfect multi purpose GPS. It's great for street navigation butthe topo maps are inferior and it's not waterproof. Magellan has not made topo maps availble to upgrade it so basically it's a good navigational unit that has light topo. I also have a couple of Garmin handhelds - a Rino and a Colorado. I love them both. I bought the City Navigator on SD and it has more accurate street data than the Crossover. They do not have voice navigation though. The Colorado is amazing. It does it all. Easy to operate.
  10. I've read that some people turn off the electronic compass when they get close. I notice it can be squirley when you get within 10 feet. I found it's better if I just take it slow between direction changes. The accuracy of the original placement can make a big difference.

  12. With WASS enabled on my Colorado I land within 2-5 feet if most caches.
  13. I'm on a Mac as well. I have a couple of Magellan products. There is no real workaround for them on a Mac. You could get a Garmin mapping handheld. Add city navigator and it works for both driving and geocaching. No voice - just beeps. Otherwise I would agree - get a Garmin hand held for caching. They work pretty well with Macs. I have just been using regional topo maps on SD so I don't have to find a PC to translate for me.
  14. Mine did the exact same thing. The Garmin Communicator does not always send the cache to the unit - it seems random. The same thing happens when I use "send to GPS" with my Rino. On my Colorado I started using Pocket Queries. Much simpler. If I could figure out how to send a pq to my Rino I'd be golden:)
  15. I have had a Crossover since they were first released. I was told detailed topo maps were on the way. Now a year and a half later they are still not available. I love the Crossover for street navigation. The topo map is not very detailed and has almost no geographic POIs.
  16. I've had my Colorado for 3 weekends now - It was an upgrade from an Explorist 400 - I absolutely love it - paperless cacheing makes it so easy to cache anytime - I've even gone on my lunch hour. The screen is awesome. Many of the details that people are concerned about are the details of the features that are on their old unit. The Colorado is a new platform and it's very smart and easy to use.
  17. Does anybody know if it possible to load a pocket query onto a Rino from a Mac? I've been loading caches one a t a time with the Garmin Communicator - not very fast. Thanks for your help.
  18. I haven't added Windows - there's nothing else I would use it for. I guess I'm just living in a windows free utopia:)
  19. The answers are all here: http://www8.garmin.com/macosx/ I see the programs - that still doesn't answer my question? How can I use the .exe link above - my machine can't even download it as a recognizeable file - do I need to have someone do something on a PC to make it useable? Isn't an .exe file a program? Isn't there a map I can buy - even if I need to use one of the programs above to convert it? That's strange, because when I view that page I see a .PDF with the instructions that opens in Preview quite nicely. I followed those instructions and have a Costa Rica map from http://rwsmaps.griffel.se/ now in my Garmin. Thanks - didn't read far enough. So it looks like it's not possible without having a PC to download it and convert it, correct? I bought a used PC last year to work with a Magellan - unfortunately it's fried:( I spent about $350 just to load maps for a few months. I'll see if I can find someone to lend me some time on their PC. Thanks for your help.
  20. You'll be fine with your iMac. Garmin is slowly rolling out software for us. I loaded XP on a partition on my MacBook Pro so I'm covered. You should do the same in my opinion. Good luck. I just got a Colorado - the reason I went with a Garmin was because of it's compatibility with my Mac. Updating and downloading caches is a snap. Far easier than my old Magellan set up.

  22. Why not? That option should work well...as long as you are willing and able to load the map to a PC and convert it for use on your Mac. Or if you have a Mac that has an Intel chip, you can boot up Windows using the Mac program BootCamp and use Garmin Windows compatible software on your Mac. If you are not able or willing to use Microsoft Windows in any situation, then right now, Garmin has only one option available. Earlier this month Garmin announced the Macintosh version of City Navigator North America NT 2008. They will be announcing the Mac version of Topo 2008 sometime later this year. It's a good bet that any new Garmin maps will be available in both a Mac and Windows version. Unfortunately I have no access to a PC or Windows. I have the topo that came on the unit and I bought the City Navigator on SD. I checked on the Topo - it doesn't have any detail on Costa Rica. Does Garmin offer any maps for Central America? I bought the Garmin because both my home and work computers are Macs. Can you tell me what I would need someone to do on a PC to make the maps on the link work on my Colorado?
  23. Thanks - I'm on a Mac - so I think this option won't work. I've emailed Garmin but have been waiting all week for a reply.
