  1. Go to GPSfiledepot http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ and find the links to download Garmin basecamp for free. http://www.garmin.com/us/products/onthetrail/basecamp Then go back to the Basecamp main page and download the Kentucky topo map. When you restart basecamp the Kentucky topo will show up as a map product and you can browse the topo map on your computer. Even if you do not use a Garmin unit you will find these free programs very useful; useful enough that you will most likely get a garmin unit to use it with.
  2. I have no other motive than to correct some errors I have found on the purchased garmin maps for my own personal use exclusively. when roads that aren’t there appear on my map I would prefer to correct it. I have no intention of sharing this with anyone else and want to make a correction to a product which I purchased. I simply wish to understand how the 8 digit code which identifies different maps relates to their location and no criminal intentions are being considered.
  3. I would like to use gpsmapedit to modify mapsource maps but I can’t seem to figure out what numbering system is used to identify the maps for my area from the mapsource disc. For example the mapsource images for topo East all begin with 561 and then followed by 4 other numbers. Any help would be appreciated.
  4. The second attempt at burning a disc worked and I now have the topo maps installed on my computer. The same disk would not load on the computer at work so I am going to try to make a couple more copies to see if one of those will. I would like to thank all those who responded and helped me out. Thanks.
  5. Here is the process as I understand it from the original you tube videos Download utorrent program 1) download the file via torrent TORRENT 2) extract the file into an iso (extract to another folder) 3) burn to dvd 4) put dvd in drive, install (open file find setup file) 5) open mapsource 6) select the IBYCUS MAPS 7) upload to your GPS like you do your other maps. So far I believe that I have the torrent downloaded, and I have extracted it into another folder although nothing has anything which says iso. Alright, I went back to my ibycus file selected all the files and then clicked burn and nothing happened. I then went to my roxio cd program and put in a disc and clicked burn. It started a project which seemed to be working and then got to this point and stayed there for over 20 minutes now http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f96/garyglonek/utorrentburn.jpg It seems frozen here and I will have to go to work and will check later but I am afraid that it will be the same later. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
  6. I almost had it, I think . I was trying to find an iso file which I would then have to burn to a disk and then install it from that as explained on the first youtube video. I now simply clicked on the application file and it started to load. Toward the end of installing I got this message http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f96/garyglonek/utorrentibycuserror.jpg I press continue and nothing happens, I am stuck again.
  7. Got up this morning and checked the download from RAR which I started before I went to bed it said download failed. I appreciate the video but have too slow of a connection to watch in HD. I am immediately stumped when it begins here is the file that you downloaded. I am to this step with utorrent; http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f96/garyglonek/utorrent.jpg when I left click I get this http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f96/garyglonek/torrentclick.jpg I go to the top press extract and make a file to extract it to. I now have this http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f96/garyglonek/utorrentextracted.jpg Where do I go from here?? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  8. I am now downloading the first RAR format file which I have no clue what it is or if it will work or even what part of canada it is for , it will take over 2 hours to find out what this thing is and so I will have to wait until tommorrow morning to find out. I tried to watch the youtube video of downloading ibycus but found it totally indecipherable between pictures of his dogs ect. This could be highly usefull if it was put in a form that could be understood. help.
  9. I now have a file on utorrent that says ibycus40.iso; I pushed something to do with jzip and extract, I now have a bunch of different files that seem to be connected to ibycus. One of the files says ibycus topo40 which is listed as a jzip archive file. Is there anything, anywhere which will explain to me how to use this stuff???
  10. I spent two days downloading ibycus topo 32 from Pirate Bay which is showed up as a jzip archive file. When I try to extract it, the jzip program says that the file is in a form which is not supported. I downloaded 7-zip and tried to open it with that and also no luck. I then dumped the file into the recycle bin and am now starting over downloading version 4 from another site. What am I doing wrong?
  11. This may be much simpler than I am making it. I know about the ibycus Canada maps and tried to watch the tutorial videos several times but I can’t make any sense out of them and give up when he keeps changing the subject etc. Can anyone explain in very simple terms what the basic steps are to get these maps and best site to get them. I have no problem using mapsource, basecamp or the other maps by gpsfiledepot, but the ibycus ones totally confuse me. thanks
  12. I got it figured out. I extracted the file to another one and then found the setup file within that and then everything seemed to work. I tried watching the video but it went to fast and over my head. Thanks.
  13. Okay, I down loaded the utorrent program and then the Ibycus 21 topo.zip into it. It was saved by default to Owner/ downloads. I clicked on this and burn it to a disc. I then opened mapsource-open-file and go to the f:drive and click on the Ibycus 21 topo.zip. an error message pops up that it is not a valid mapsource file and cannot be opened. What did I do wrong?
  14. my new etrex venture HC uses a usb cable connection to the computer which will also power the unit. I see usb cable adapters for cigarette lighters and wonder if these are safe to use for my gps unit. That is, do they reduce the voltage to 5 volts which I see is the voltage of the usb port?
  15. I have had the etrex venture HC for about 2 weeks now and am quite happy with it. I am sitting in my living room and getting accuracy readings of 19 feet. I compared it side by side with an older 12 XL under dense tree cover and it never lost a signal when the 12XL was constantly losing it. In my opinion, this is a great unit for the price and fits my particular needs just fine. I ordered mine from Tigergps on a Monday morning and recieved it on Thursday afternoon. The ability to download maps is well worth the extra price over the basic unit, and extra features include a calculator, calendar and games.
  16. I recently received an etrex venture HC and it works great. I am getting accuracy readings of less than 20 feet inside my house and made several tests against known (NGS surveyed) GPS points and get accuracies less than 9 feet. Have loaded maps in from mapsource and am quite happy except that I can’t figure out how to play the games in the game mode. I expect the cursor to move when I use the joystick in the maze game etc. but nothing happens. Any one know how to play these games?
  17. Using a Garmin 12XL with readings of an EPE of 20 feet or less, against known GPS points, I find a maximum error of a single reading to be 30 feet. To increase accuracy, I average the readings with a simple method which may be different than what others use when they “average” a reading. My method is to record a range of readings and simply average the highest and lowest reading obtained, regardless of the most common reading encountered. My reasoning goes like this. A single reading tells me that the actual location is somewhere within a 30 foot radius circle where I am standing. Other readings at the same location will have the same meaning. As the range of the readings increase, the error of my true location decreases. In practice, I normally get a range of 5 units (one unit = .001 minutes) or 30 feet of latitude within 5-10 minutes. The average between the high and low readings will then be reliably within 15 feet of the true location. If I get a range of 10 units or 60 feet of latitude, my error will be zero. This may take more time than most geocachers care to spend, but if higher accuracy is desired, it is a method that can be used. After testing and practice, I find that very accurate readings can be obtained with off the shelf, inexpensive, basic units. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of an etrex-H to do some more testing.
